I love this place! It is in downtown front royal in an old building that is crammed with books. Old…read morebooks, new books, veritable antique books, cards... Royal Oak has some nice perks. They will buy some used books - just bring them in when you come to shop! They also have a rebate card. You get a stamp for every five dollars you spend, and when the card is full you can turn it in for a 15% discount on your purchase! The cards never expire which is an added bonus. They have a good civil war section, and a section devoted to local history including trail maps and tour books. They also have unique notecards and a good variety of autographed books, and will order any book you need if they don't have it. Parking is a bit limited. There is a small lot behind the store which you can access by turning down Stonewall (at the car dealership), and then taking the second gravel lane on the left - this is a back alley that leads to the parking lot. I never walk away empty-handed. Even if there were a chain book store in town (which there is not), I would still shop here.

However, go elsewhere for trading in stuff. I was given a lowball offer for some games and a collectible I brought in and the owner wasn't happy because one was imported. I ended up taking them to EStarland on my way home and got a much better offer and actual praise for bringing in some good stuff. In the end, if you find what you are looking for, that's great! but go elsewhere to get better values for your trade ins.

In addition to the various hobby shop related wares - there are lots of neat little bits to the store - a miniature old school pinball machine; a little red wooden wagon mounted on the wall; upstairs on a door - a sign that painted with the words: "The Speakeasy," harkening back to an earlier time when a previous business conducted wine tastings and such upstairs at this location.
