The first thing I noticed was the welcome sign, "Aloha! Come in!" I thought it must be a Hawaiian theme for the day as I walked into the little store, which is actually a house. I fell in love-I want my house to look like this store! It exudes the warmth of immediately feeling at home and relaxing you. The books filled the shelves and the displays was a perfect touch to the ambiance of the the bookshop. The owner, Allen was so nice and welcoming. This store is better than any book store I've been to. In fact, if you ever seen the movie, "You've got mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks? This bookshop reminds you of that store (Little Shop around the Corner) in that movie. Anyhow, if you're looking for a book that you think may be out of print or just wondering if you will find your favorite childhood books, you just may find it here. I found that he had the original books of Laura Ingalls Wilder! As I was oohing and aahing, my ears all of sudden perked up as the Hawaiian music of Hapa filled the bookshop. I paused and looked around. Sure enough, the CD was on display to show what was being played. I shared with the owner it's so interesting that the music comes on when I'm at the store sharing that I'm visiting from Hawaii. First, the welcoming sign and now Hawaiian music! While I'm still thinking that it was a Hawaiian theme for that day, he smiled big and shared that he was born and raised on Oahu...Kaneohe/Kailua side to be exact! That's when I looked closer at his appearance, he was in aloha casual. Aloha shirt, jeans and barefoot that reminded you of the movie, "The Descendants". We chatted for awhile about Hawaii until another customer came in, which gave me the chance to look around. I found the original version of Maya Angelou's book, "I know why the caged bird sings". And guess what...it was so reasonably priced that it borders on cheap. I take that back, it was a cheap price. I love this store and not just because the owner was born and raised in Hawaii but it's that type of store that you can just stay in there all day because it's just so welcoming! For parents, grandparents, aunties, or uncles-there's a children's area where you can sit and read with your kids. There's other handmade items that are on sale too. Here it was only the first weekend I was away from home yet I was missing Hawaii and I was missing my family. Enters in the little bookshop in the historic part of Leesburg showing me no matter where you travel, you'll end up meeting someone that will say, "Hey! I'm from Hawaii too! Or I visited Hawaii!" Birch Tree Books & Plants is a really interesting combination of a business…read more The store itself is chock full of books and, of course, plants in a series of little rooms in a house in downtown Leesburg.  It's a fun place to wander through and look at what is on each shelf and in the corners.  There are other cute quirks such as a wheel you can spin with each purchase.  You can win candy or a small prize among other options.  It's a little extra fun and the kids loved it when we visited.  We were there for an author talk which took place upstairs in a bigger, open and light-filled room.  The set up worked very well, providing a casual atmosphere but also one that was very intimate due to the smaller number of chairs the space could accommodate. The event was well run and we will definitely keep our eye on the calendar for future events.  Parking is convenient in nearby garages.

Unfortunately, their inventory is heavy on romance, historical fiction, some new releases, and children's books, which don't happen to be genres I read often. Trying to peel them off with alcohol or ever a dryer ruin the book's value and is heartbreaking for lovers of old paperbacks. It's unfortunate.

I immediately oohed and aahed and asked if was permissible to pet this little bundle of joy. Cammie told me to go ahead and pet away. I asked if it was a boy or girl - and what was their name and age? Turns out - she is a she - a little one year old named "Fable!" What made me want to visit The Open Book was their window showcase of Where's Waldo seek and find books (my fav)! We walked into a beautiful bookstore. We walked around pointing to all the books we like when I saw the book for me! (I mean, my grandson). It's the ABC's of Virginia!! I grabbed that book so fast and went right to check out.
