I was really apprehensive about getting some jewelry that I had acquired a while back appraised. I kind of equate it to when your car breaks down and you know nothing about cars so you have to take it somewhere and just take their word for what's wrong with it and how much it's going to cost you. I know nothing about gold, silver, or diamonds' worth..so wherever I took what I had I would just have to take their word for what they appraise it for. I did a decent amount of research and Main Street Coin had the best overall reviews. I emailed ahead of time to see if I would need to make an appointment or just bring my stuff in. They replied pretty quickly that either/or would be fine and they gave me the hours of each of their three locations. I made my way out to their Hyde Park location on a Friday afternoon. I didn't make an appointment. The parking situation at this location is a bit tricky. There are spots behind the building, but not that many, and when I went they were all taken. Not really knowing where else to park I ended up parking at a Chiropractors office down the street a bit..and just crossed my fingers that I wouldn't be that long and my car wouldn't be towed while I was inside. When I arrived there was one person in front of me getting something appraised. I took the time I had to kill to look around the store a bit. It was very clean and well organized. Tons of interesting looking coins for sale..as well as some other gold/silver items. Pretty cool stuff. Once the customer in front of me was finished I brought my stuff up to the counter. The guy working there that day was extremely friendly and more than willing to appraise my stuff for me. I pretty much said I wasn't intending on selling anything that day..that I just wanted to see what I had..and he was totally cool with that. He took the time to examine every piece and explain to me what he was looking for and what each piece was exactly. It was interesting to watch the process. Unfortunately, in the end, my stuff wasn't worth any where near what I thought it was going to be. Bummer. Still though, the service here was excellent and I definitely left confident that they had given the stuff a detailed and honest assessment. If I decide to sell any of the stuff, or if I came across more gold or silver in the future, I would for sure bring it back here to get appraised and I would recommend this place to other for similar services. read more

I definitely enjoy Main Street Coin. I'm fond of silver bullion rounds in particular, and they usually have a reasonably-priced selection of high-quality rounds. The hours are fairly short, but it's not the type of place that likes to be open after dark since the risk of robbery is pretty high when tens of thousands of dollars of precious metals are present. I like browsing through all the old coins they have as well. There is a 3% fee for credit card transactions, but that's quite reasonable since many coin shops do not accept cards at all. read more

They Sold Me MULTIPLE FAKE GOLD COINS and Won't Give Me My Money Back! I bought several Gold Eagles and Pamp Swiss Bars of gold directly from the owner of this company and just found out 3 of 6 ounces are fake. The Three different shops I tried to sell them to at all tested and confirmed that they are fake right in front of me. I paid cash at the time and was told I couldn't have a formal paper receipt because they were not charging me the legally required state tax. When I went back pissed off the owner acknowledged he remembered selling me them, but said without a receipt he won't do anything and then just smiled and told me to leave. SO ANGRY! Beyond getting ripped off for thousands of dollars that were for my kids college fund... I looked like a damn scam artist trying to rip off three different businesses by selling fake gold. My brother and I finally decided to take our father's coin collection (which had sat in our basements for over 25 years) in to be evaluated or sell. We set up an appointment, and Clay was there when we arrived. He was very pleasant and thoroughly knowledgeable. We had books with coins, loose coins and individually wrapped items. He went through every piece, jotting down numbers for each. He listened to every question we had with no judgements when we had unreasonable expectations of certain things. In the end he offered us a fair price for over half of the items, and educated us on the others. We walked away feeling very satisfied that we had transacted business with a very reputable man. Over two years ago I came to this store to buy my first gold coin - a 1oz American Eagle. New to precious metals, I asked about the pricing for both buying and selling. The gentleman told me I was paying $70 over spot for the coin, but that he'd pay me $40 over spot if/when I came to sell it back. Since then I've been a regular buying customer and I've taken a couple friends into the shop to buy their first coins. Today was the first time I was to sell. I returned to Hyde Park Rare Coin with that same Eagle and was offered spot and only spot. Either they changed their policy, or I was lied to. I asked the gal when they changed their policy and she said it has always been this way. Then she asked me who told me I'd get $40 over spot. This may be the norm for coin buying and selling, and I'm just learning. And I'm sure most sellers are hard on cash and take what they can get. But I'm not, and I don't like being misled. I'll sell my Eagle, and do my future business, elsewhere. read more

After doing some homework of my own, I walked in, handed the item to the employee and was quoted an incredibly fair price after half a minute. Another half a minute later, I was walking out the door with my cash. Hey coin collectors- this place is awesome! I trust no other cincinnati coin dealer for buying or selling. I once walked in with a 1911 $5 Gold Indian (PCGS MS-64), and asked the head coin dealer there, Clay, if he wanted to trade. Most gold buyers in town will only pay you $300 or so on a $5 Gold piece of any kind, based only on it's melt value. To cut to the chase, I walked out of Hyde Park Rare Coin with an 1885-S $1 Silver Morgan Dollar , (PCGS MS-65), an 1899 $20 Gold Liberty (PCGS AU 58), AND $800 cash. If this all sounds Greek to you, then let me put it this way: I literally quadrupled my gold holdings, plus got a free silver dollar and $800 out of the deal. True story! read more

Just got home from running around Cincinnati to sell my old engagement ring (my husband decided to upgrade mine for Valentine's Day, yay!) and decided that my experience today was worth writing a review about, although I normally do not write reviews. I wanted to share my experience with other women who may be doing the same thing at some point. I was amazed at the price that Hyde Park Rare Coin offered my for my engagement ring. I went to 4 places. The offers for my ring went in the following order: Hyde Park was my first stop, they offered $2300.00, the second place I went to offered $1100.00, the third offered $1650.00 and the last place offered me $800.00!! Needless to say, I went back to Hyde Park. They seemed very knowledgeable about diamonds, pointing out characteristics I did not even know existed with my stone, and the owner was very pleasant to deal with. I cannot believe the price differences that I found when I ran around today, but obviously I am happy I stopped into this shop.
