That said, my husband's experience at Bethesda Tobacco in Bethesda earlier today was so bad that, well, I am compelled to warn others. He went in hoping to ask some straightforward questions about some items, and to then (hopefully) purchase a product. When he arrived, the store appeared empty, so he waited a few minutes. Eventually, an employee emerged from the back - holding a sandwich, mind you - and began talking to him while chewing. I cannot stress enough how unprofessional and off-putting this was. No greeting, no acknowledgment of the wait (or of my husband, really): just a mouth full of food, and an attitude of annoyance. My husband asked about options in the $30 price range, since many products were priced around $50. The employee's response was basically "nope" (with a mouth full of sandwich) - delivered with no explanation or alternative suggestions. It was obvious that customer service was not a priority. Things only got worse when my husband tried to clarify dosage versus price. There was a $10 product labeled as 200 mg, and a $55 product with the same dosage. When he asked about the difference, the employee "carelessly" admitted he didn't know, and proceeded to keep eating his sandwich. At that point, my husband just left the store; it was clear he was not going to get any helpful information. The very small silver lining: Bethesda Smoke Shop does carry a very wide selection of kratom and nicotine vapes. Unfortunately, product variety cannot make up for completely incompetent and disrespectful customer service. Being talked to with someone's mouth full of food, dismissed without answers, and ignored while standing in the store is utterly unacceptable. I would not recommend Bethesda Smoke Shop to anyone looking for knowledgeable staff, professional service, or even a basic level of courtesy: there are plenty of other stores where employees actually care about helping customers. 1 star - 0 stars, actually, but I don't think that's an option on here. And, it makes me sad to be honest: I was a regular there a few years back; the gentlemen working there all knew who I was, and would always help me out if I was short a few cents. *Deep Sigh* Looks like things have plummeted over there.

However, the customer service left a lot to be desired, especially for a first visit. I'm big on first impressions, and unfortunately, this one missed the mark. Not a single employee greeted us during our shopping experience, nor did any offer assistance as we shopped. I did witness several staff talking and laughing with each other, yet no one made an effort to assist with customers shopping. What stood out most was when an employee walked directly in front of us to change price tags, made eye contact, and continued working without a simple "excuse me" or offer to help. We ended up just reaching in front of him to grab the bottle ourselves. Just rude! People choose to spend their hard-earned money where they feel welcomed and valued. While the store has great potential based on its size and selection, the lack of basic customer service made the experience disappointing. Oh well! If customer service doesn't bother you or being treated like a valued customer isn't top on your list, this is the perfect place for you. I'll probably just stick to the Laurel location.

Their margins must be tight, as they open at 10 AM on Wednesday, and some titles are sold out by 11:30. So, they appear to be under ordering, so as not to have to potentially sit on stock. Not too long ago, they changed their policy where they wouldn't be ordering variant covers unless you specifically pre-ordered them. Sure, that's their prerogative, but many variants are open-order, not requiring any minimums on the part of the retailer, so it just seems...odd. The service...This is my biggest gripe. Often, I've gone into the store to find the cashier talking to a friend/acquaintance. A customer might want assistance, and the cashier is visibly annoyed that he has to stop his conversation to provide customer service. Then, once the customer checked out and left, the cashier would turn to his friend and say something like "That's the guy I was telling you about", with a laugh. So, they seem to joke about their customers - the people keeping them in business - and it just feels unprofessional. I've worked retail, so I get it, but those aren't conversations to gold loudly, as other customers are in the store. I mean, what are they saying about ME when I leave? This has happened more than once, while some of the other loud topics of discussion aren't always appropriate for "polite company". The most friendly employee, sadly, passed away recently, so we're left with the ones talking behind our backs.
