When you want a wide variety of goldfish.. not just fish.. but the pretty variety, and nothing else will do.. this is probably the most likely place you will find some pretty finned friends. This store has been around since I was young and we would always go see what was new. Just like vegetables, goldfish only come in season, and when the goldfish store owners can get supply. Gone are the days of the old man who use to run this store, and I have a feeling he probably sold the business to a different family, it just feels different coming in now. A very non-talkative male is usually up front from the last few times I was here just waiting for you to ask him to take a fish out and be on your way so he could do something better than put on any hint of a smile, but really, you're here for the water creatures. From oranda's, to comet's, to ryukin, to lionhead, to ranchu, to pearl scale, to red cap, to black moor, to bubble eye, to koi, and some other variety of goldfish, this is the place to be to find that special finned friend. They are not all about goldfish, but the majority is. No salt water from my visits, but other things like parrot fish, to oscar's to tropical fish are pretty abundant as well. They carry a good range of fish tanks, and supplies, to either decorate the tank, to maintaining things, this store has you covered. From the outside, this place really needs a good power wash, it's looking it's age, but the inside, and all the tanks are kept pretty pristine. Communication between you and the person you need help from is minimal to you wanting a fish, him coming over, you pointing, him getting a bag, getting the fish, putting it in the bag, tying it up, walking up to the front counter, taking your money.. and you are gone! Other than that, enjoy looking at the variety and quantity this store has. read more

Dude sold me 6 month expired fish food (at full price too), advised me the wrong information leading me to overstock my tank with SICK fish, came in the next day when the store was supposed to be open (with the open sign on) and waited over an hour and no one showed up to open the store (another women came by while I waited and said that this was not the first time either). I'd advise being very careful and cautious trusting this store! read more

I went in to Main Aquariums today looking to buy an aquarium and aquatic plants. I picked out some that I wanted but when I asked for help the lady at the front said one second and kept on her phone call. I looked around the store for a couple of minutes but she didn't seem like she planned to get off the phone so I left. The store looked like it had some quality products at a good price so it's a shame. read more

Before I start, I have to admit that I did got some not so common fishes from them and am happy with it. However, I didn't like the fact that there was never a welcoming vibe upon my visits. The man at the counter do not seem like he wants you to be in the store. On top of that, what really upset me is how he charges $18 each on the bill while the fishes were labeled $17.95 on the glass (of course tax is also calculated after the "increased" price). It is not a lot of dollar difference but I don't appreciate this way of doing business. read more

Racist unfriendly customer service! as soon as we entered the store the guy gave us a look as if he was wondering why we were there!!! i Was going to buy an aquarium and 2 fishes for my son but they guy was not very friendly and when I tried asking a few questions about the price of tanks he was almost agressive in his reply so I left. I went in here today to check it out, with a couple of children. They are both 4 years old, and adhere to my rather high standards for behaviour in public (...most of the time). In this particular shop, they were the very picture of respectful curiosity. We walked around the shop, looking at the many varieties of fish, snails, lobsters (!), and other aquatic life. In every single tank, I saw dead specimens, mostly being eaten by their fellows. Here's hoping they didn't die of something contagious ... The children talked about the fish and came up with imaginative stories for each other about the animals. They stood for a long time at the lobster tank, watching to see if any of the tiny lobsters ever caught any of the fish (not that we ever saw!). After about 10 minutes of walking around, we walked back to the front and I looked at the guy behind the counter and smiled at him and said, "Thank you! Happy New Year!" - he literally scowled and frowned at me, and did not reply. During this exchange, the children were waiting patiently and quietly by the front door, where a super-friendly cat was rubbing against their legs. The children are cat-savvy, so I told them they could pet the obviously cuddly cat. Who proceeded to lie on the ground for a belly rub ... Way more friendly than the guy working there!!! I am a long-time fishkeeper myself, and I take different children into fish stores around the region on a regular basis, since it's a fun and relatively dry rainy-day activity that is educational and inspires the imagination. Also, it's free! But I've never experienced a store-keeper who was unfriendly, until this guy at Fraser Aquariums. We did not touch anything inappropriate, we did not make loud scary noises, we did not break anything, and we moved at a reasonable speed through the narrow aisles. What more could someone expect from children (or adults!), anyway?? Most proprietors of fish stores are thrilled to have well-behaved children browse, knowing it's a valuable opportunity for a new generation to learn about their own (obviously) favourite hobby, and if they choose to listen in, they can experience the children's wonder and excitement at each new kind of critter that they see. With that unusually rude attitude and the clear lack of attention to the dead fish issue (fish die during/after transport - I get that - but having dead ones in every tank is not a necessary consequence, and most fish stores keep on top of the situation), I would steer clear of this place for any fish-related purchases. I've never regretted a purchase from Aquariums West (jussayin - you can read my review to find out more). read more

Main(ly horrible) Aquarium. Half a star, if that. The owner was rude, unhelpful, and kept changing the price. After merely asking about discounts, promotions, coupons, etc. he refused to serve. This is unacceptable. Someone needs to shut this place down and start an aquarium the community can actually enjoy. Put your money into decent businesses who actually care about and value their customers. This guy only cares about profit, not people. Steer clear of this place at all costs. read more

We always buy fishes in this store cos its in my husband way from work.. I always call ahead to ask if they have what wer looking for. Its was fine until recently. My husband always check and taking his time to check the fishes to make sure theyre ok and not sick before buying it. Then my husband brought fishes home one of them looks hurt, curbing his back and wobbles when it swims. I called the store and asking if we can exchange it. Man if you value your customer you wouldnt have to be so mean.. "you think i broke the fish?".. Well i guess so its not gonna wobble when its okay ryt? I love this store, excellent goldfish and knowledgeable staff. This fish store has brought beautiful fish to Vancouver for over 40 years. I see that there are a few individuals and competitors who like to put the store down and I really don't know why. I cannot see why anyone would want to put down a store that has been bring us great goldfish and freshwater fish for over 40 years from all over the world. I have 5 balloon rams that I have that are healthy and beautiful that I bought from the store. I have so many beautiful goldfish that are imported from many different places from Main Aquarium. I have a 90 gallon for my three 18 cm Orandas and they are healthy and give me great pleasure every day. The store moved from Fraser to Main Street and I want to say any person who tries to put down any business in Vancouver should be ashamed as it is really difficult to make a living in Vancouver. Bought two bettas for my five and three year old. The young Asian man working was like an automatron and refused to answer a question from my five year old and acted if he was allergic to any interactions with customers. Plus, he gave us WRONG advice about how a male and female betta can be in the same tank. This place is dark, dank, and depressing. Go to Mr. Pets on Commercial and First. Tetras, dwarf frogs,gold fish, bettas,etc. Price range is cheap, especially aquarium tanks. $30 for a full set of 10 gallon aquarium, including water conditioner, light hood, net, decorations, etc.( wouldnt recommend buying any fish though, only the equipment) Many types of aquarium accessories,such as, decorations, siphons ($10 for small), filters, pumps , lights, etc. The shop owner has been working there for more than 20 years. read more

Fraser Aquarium opened in the 1970's and has become an institution for fish fanciers in Vancouver. Family owned and operated, it offers a large and diverse inventory of fresh water tropical fish, goldfish and koi. It also stocks aquatic plants as well as a large inventory of aquariums, supplies, aquascaping material, fish food, medication, etc, etc. The staff are very friendly and they offer something that chain stores like Petcetera and Mr. Pet's cannot offer; namely personal service, knowledge and expertise about fish keeping. Fraser Aquarium recently relocated from their old, established site on Fraser street to a new site on Main Street (in Vancouver's "Little India.") I'm happy to say that their new store is every bit as nice as their previous one. read more

i was directed here when i was looking for canister filter parts.Not only did they have everything i needed to repair my Fluval 404s,but the prices were cheaper than online prices from the U.S.The selection in this store is amazing.Not only is there a huge inventory of aquarium supplies,but a ton of reptile supplies including Exo Terra habitats and any substrate you could ask for. While looking around the many stocked tanks I spotted a striped Gar,Ive been looking for one for ever and intend purchasing one as soon as i set up my new tank (also purchased here,a used 55 gallon Hagen rimless for $65!)Cant say enough about this place.Granted its not that attractive inside but really?Im not there for the decor I just want a wide selection of fish and equipment at great prices. As far as the owner being amiable,I found him very helpful and knowledgeable,i even met his two dogs,I will keep coming here for all my aquatic needs. read more
