Mai Colachi is an intimate, beautiful Pakistani restaurant in Plano that invites the community to a haven of delicious food. We came here as a family for iftar and were not disappointed. There were many high points like the variety of drinks at the drink station, the elaborate iftar buffet and the small touches of Ramadan decor that felt intimate and special. The kababs here were juicy, well marinated and absolutely delicious. I appreciated the curries as well, and my aunt enjoyed their butter chicken a lot. Service was average as it was a packed dining hall so it was a bit on the slow side but whenever I went up to the counter to ask for something they were quick to get me what I wanted. My only complaint was that dessert was lacking. The shahi tukray were more on the bland side and the pumpkin halwa fell flat and was unappetizing. I hope they can up their dessert game to match other high quality restaurants in the area. Otherwise this is a nice family restaurant to enjoy a quality meal at. read more

My wife and I wandered in on a whim ready to enjoy some IndoPak food and the joint was packed on a Friday night. It seemed like a large party was going on and when the hostess looked at us strangely as to why we were here, we didn't pay any mind to it. She explained that tonight is only a buffet and we said sure that's fine. We sat down and realized we looked very different from everyone inside. After some googling we realized it was Ramadan and everyone was breaking their fast. We carried on and jumped in at the buffet. I could not tell you the names of mostly what we ate but for the most part it was all pretty delicious. The pakora, though cold, ate deliciously with a nameless chicken curry that was also on the line. Went back for seconds on that curry. My biryani was also delicious as was what I could only assume was the chicken tandoori. There was this dessert made with sweetened condensed milk and vermicelli (and other things) that I also could not get enough of. Anyway, when we paid, we told the hostess we loved the food and appreciated them welcoming us in and experience a very important part of their culture. Came here after getting recommended to visit. Noticed that outside the poster said halal that was good. Came inside and its a fine dining environment. But something was a bit off. The menu is claiming that its a pakistani restaurant, going on about its background and all but from the environment, food, and staff i got a more indian feel. Thats fine but dont label yourself as pakistani restaurant if the food and folks running it are Indian background. For example: the food. The nihari and especially the naan were too thin. The naan had an indian roti like feel. Not sure if it went into a tandoor or the atta mixture was made well. Mango shake wasn't good. Also prices were crazy here not sure if thats what fine dining means lol I did see one of the larger tables next to me have modelo and ultra light (blue can) of beer(multiple since it was a large group) . Didnt see alcohol on menu so wanted to point out that either these folks brought alcohol with them (not likely) or its served off the menu. This is an OG Pakistani restaurant and I must say my first dine-in experience here was pleasantly surprising as I've been here a few times for buffet related events and didn't enjoy the food or the over crowded events. We came on a weekday, late so it was mostly empty. The restaurant is generally well kept and clean. Lots of space and seats for groups. They have a robust menu. Our server was nice and polite. We had some communication issues when we ordered with the type of soup they had but what we got was good so no harm done. The karhai was really good, both chicken and goat versions. The assorted naan plate was the perfect accompaniment to that. I tried the shikanjbeen and it is not what im used to getting in Pakistan but the drink was nice. I would definitely come back for dine in here though would avoid the buffets type events if i can. The difference for me between the two experiences is night and day. read more

Great food, reasonably priced and excelent service. We had dined here last year and had a good experience. We had their chicken karahai, which didn't disappoint. Last week, for Ramadan, we catered two 1/2 trays of chicken biryani and chicken qorma. Both items were available on time and were delivered to my car with a smile. Being from the UK, I love Indo/Pakistani food. I live in California, but I don't find anywhere that's as good as the food back in the UK, especially in London. A colleague from work recommended dislocation while I was in Dallas. I went there for a work dinner. The service was excellent, and the food and quality really reminded me of that authentic Indo/Pakistani cuisine. Ordered Bang Bang shrimp and Lahori Fish for starters - total disappointment - got 5 shrimps from a frozen tv box dinner, lower quality ten Costco, and 6 burned pan seared fish nuggets , with no flavor absolutely NOT Lahori fried fish. Shinwari was requested with sauce, but got no sauce. Karahi meat was mixed poor quality meat. Karahi should be made from the leg or foreleg (Dasti) not here ! Omg. The best Pakistani restaurant I have ever had!! The malai chicken is to die for. The Karahi is the best. The garlic naan are so good. It's hard to find authentic desi restaurants with high quality food/ingredients and this really met my expectations. We've been here twice now and it's always such a treat! This time we took my bf's parents - they're very American and not into spicy foods at all but love trying out new foods if they're not spicy and I'm delighted to say everything we've tasted here fits the bill! They serve the curries in handis, cute little copper bowls. Not sure if the foods were cooked in here but the presentation is nice. We got the Reshmi handi last time and it was exquisite - so creamy and delightful. Unfortunately they were out of it this time so we got the makhani handi - basically butter chicken but better. IT was very fragrant and flavorful without being overwhelming. We also tried the chicken biriyani and it's 100% top 5 biriyani. They were so generous with the fried shallots! If you've never had biriyani before I must note that there are chicken bones of various sizes and spices that need to be picked out as you're eating so it can be a bit of work, but it's sooo worth it! We got garlic naan as well and gosh, it's so perfectly garlicky - I always want a loot of garlic on my garlic naan and this place delivers handsomely. For dessert we got the lachedar rabdi and the sushi kheer. If I were to go back I'd get one and that one would be the rabdi. It was soooo decadent and creamy. And the side by side comparison of that to kheer, which is supposed to be a little thinner, is a disservice to the kheer. So if you want more of a rose flavor, the kheer has wonderful notes of rose petal. It's also more balanced if rabdi is going to be too rich. Overall, I highly recommend this place and can't wait to return. :) read more

We were in this area on a Sunday morning and the place that we originally were going to visit was jam packed, so I looked up reviews of places we could go to that were nearby. I saw that on Sunday, this place has a Sunday brunch, and that got my interest. I called and they said that the lunch would end at 3:00 p.m. Luckily, we were able to get here by 2:40 p.m. Usually, people will roll their eyes when there are people coming in right before the end of a buffet time. However, nobody here did that. We were greeted with smiles and great customer service. Being the daughter of a great Pakistani cook, it is difficult for me to compliment a pakistani restaurant, because I am so used to a high standard of food. Hardly anyones food can compare to my mother's, but this establishment did it (please dont tell her I said that). The beef in the nihari was so soft and succulent, the biryani was spot on, and the gajar ka halwa had me going back for seconds. Let me preface, the rating is a critique of their sanitary conditions, both of the kitchen and bathroom which ultimately reflects back on the quality of their food. Visited this location on a Thursday evening with a family member. We ordered the Malai Boti, Chicken Handi, and Beef Kabob along with butter naan. The naan was fresh, delicious, not too dry or salty, but the Chicken in the Chicken Handi had a slight chicken-y taste. A bit too noticeable. Soon as the meal was over, went to the restroom to wash my hands, when I noticed a roach around the skin area. Another one was dead outside the restroom door, in the kitchen area on a black mat. This is just not acceptable. If the sanitary conditions of the bathroom and kitchen are this bad, I do not want to know how disgusting and poorly managed the stove, fridge, etc., area must be. Last Saturday I was here with my soccer buddies and some of their wife's and children (party of 16) unfortunately I didn't get to taste everything because I had to leave early to relieve the babysitter but I managed to taste some tiny portions of chicken 65, naan, jeera rice, daal, mutton bhuna and chicken kadhai... they all tasted great but the mutton was gamy tasting. So I got below: 1. 3x mutton hunzai kebab - tasted awesome but the portions were really tiny and the pieces were so small, like corn flakes.... $16.95 per dish 2. 3x sangam kebab (chicken and beef) $13.95 each 3. Beef Bihari kebab - $12.95 each, #2 & #3 both tasted ok but again, not worth the money since the portions sizes were so tiny 4. 8 naans (since they don't come with the dishes ordered, good taste and worth the price ($1.95) They did not label any of the boxes so these are either sangam kababs or beef Bihari kababs (in the pic). I ordered 3 of each, both tasted and looked identical. Now that I think of it, they tasted like the frozen al kabir/ colonel kebabZ that I used to buy from the grocery store. Couldn't get the pics of the mutton kebabs as they were gobbled up quickly on the field ... 3 of the other kebabs I got to go for home. We were a large group about 20 people visiting from Chicago and really enjoyed our Karachi-style halal lunch here. Mixed grill was great (tikka boti in particular) as well as the mixed naan (garlic, sesame, butter). Peshawari karahi chicken was also very good and comparable to Chicago restaurants. I don't know why Desi restaurants in DFW are so inconsistent. We went this week and ordered what we always order, the shinwari mutton. We also ordered the paneer masala (or whatever the equivalent name is). We had a few bites of each and just gave up. So not good. And you end up spending like $70-$80 on food and it's not even good? I'll be completely honest, when this restaurant first opened and it engaged in a brute force mass marketing campaign to get the word out to everyone and anything the onslaught of poor reviews steered me away from this location especially as the common theme seemed to be "overpriced". Much later and I'm happy to say that one way or another, they've earned their reputation. One of the biggest factors in both this review and my decision making in general involves the quality of service I expect to/do receive at the business. Although I didn't meet the owner or manager who many claim are quite hospitable, I was treated well by the two young staff who were there. Even when our server forgot our raita he ran back directly to get it once we reminded him. When a young girl noticed we had a small cake for a friend's birthday she immediately offered us utensils and small plates. Both of them were very accommodating, respectful and polite and they probably deserve to be paid more. As for the food, which I'm sure is many people's concern, they've managed to pass one of the simplest yet apparently most difficult checkpoints: not tasting like Shan Masala. Their chicken biryani which we had to order 30-40 minutes ahead tasted fresh, had no raw powder and the chicken was seasoned and flavored inside and out. Their Malai Boti was extremely delicate and soft but still well broiled and seasoned. Their Masala fries were a little over cooked but a nice appetizer for the small ones. Their garlic naan was fresh, didn't grease my fingers and had an acceptable note of garlic. Across the board I was happy with what I received, especially as it came warm and fresh to the table. To keep the honesty train going, if you're expecting to pay more than average for the portion then that's absolutely true. But when you consider the standard for Halal South Asian to be a level below, spending the dime isn't so bad if you're celebrating or treating someone. I definitely am putting this restaurant on a long dusty spot in my mind and I recommend you come by and see if this will meet your expectations as well. read more

I have been here a few times and the food has always been good. I try to order different items when I go there. My favorite is the tropical chicken and the chicken malai boti. I like the ambiance of the restaurant. The reason for a 3 star is because the staff is rude or they don't have common sense. The table that we got was wobbly, We asked for another table and they said they are all reserved. The waiter started putting napkins to stabilize the table and it didn't work. Friday night 7 of us went to their restaurant, didn't have reservations but it was quite empty so they let us sit. We were there about 2 hours. Spend about $250. We were just talking after dinner. By that time they had lot of people but they still had at least 3/4 long tables empty. All on a sudden the owner came to us and said I need a table in 15 minutes in front of all the guest. He did not realize he was insulting his group of 7 customers who are Regular customers. I felt so embarrassed because we had some known people also around us who heard. I let the manager know that was rude that what he did. She was still justifying his actions. In my many years in Dallas I have seen so many restaurants opened and got closed.
