I used to be a fan of Mahoney's. Yes, their plants aren't always reasonably priced, but it was nice to give money to a small business who had a couple knowledgeable individuals rather than a big box store whose garden center staff usually know nothing about plants. I visited 6-8 weeks ago and the COVID precautions were standard: tape on the floor to set directions for aisles and a tent outside to pay. The inside was cramped, but it wasn't a huge problem because the reopening was still new-ish and other customers were generally respectful. Today I visited and they were newly requiring a line outside for people to wait to enter the greenhouse. This would be fine, but I waited for 25 minutes in the blaring sun, listening to the staff (who were standing in the shade) complain loudly about the heat. Yes, I could have left. But I was there to shop. So it's finally my turn to enter, and they couldn't have had the plants any more cramped together, yet many areas of the greenhouse and inside the little store were nearly empty. While they had people patrolling how many shoppers could enter, there was no one monitoring that people were going the wrong way in the aisles and squeezing (literally brushing shoulders with other shoppers). So their social distancing "effort" was essentially futile. Then, when I left, I let an employee know how unpleasant the inside of the store had been. She glared, waved her hand, and said "Well, sorry to hear that." The tone was not empathetic, but dismissive. The subtext was "stop complaining." I didn't want an apology, just for the concerns to be acknowledged as legitimate. So, Mahoney's Brighton, some suggestions: - Train staff to say things like "Thank you for letting me know. I'll inform my manager." "Thanks for your feedback. We want our visitors to have a pleasant shopping experience." "We're working on it, but your feedback is appreciated." - For a garden center that has a ton of trees around and access to umbrellas, try positioning them to create shade around where you require your shoppers to wait in line. This would also give people a chance to browse while standing in line. - Consider spacing the plants in the greenhouse out so that people don't crowd each other. - Better yet, put the plants on the flatbed roller carts and move them outside, in the shade, so people can browse in the open air without waiting in line, and roll the carts in at closing time. - If you're not going to monitor people in the greenhouse, at least place bright signs that say "WRONG WAY" directly in eye-line, not just faded arrow tape on the floors. Hopefully some changes are made there. If not, you've permanently lost a family of customers. read more

Man, something happened here. I came to Mahoney's a year ago - multiple times - and everyone was great. Warm, helpful, excited about plants. I went today with my girlfriend, and the staff on hand couldn't care less about what we needed. 1.) I asked 3 staff members for help, and all of them just shrugged their shoulders. "Can I get someone to help us transplant these?" Shrug. "Where can I transplant these myself?" Shrug. Thanks. 2.) Mahoney's now charges a transplant fee. Maybe that policy has always been around, but they've never charged me before. I spend good money in your store, the least you can do is help me pot my new plants. 3.) The cashier didn't say a word to me, barely even looked at me. You work at a beautiful garden center on a sunny day! Cheer up, lady. I'll give this place an extra star for its selection - not everyone needs help from staff. But if you're looking to browse and ask a few questions about plants, maybe learn a thing or two, there are other, better garden centers around Boston. A note to staff: Look up the definition of "customer service." Or ask your parents about it. Sorry I'm not sorry. read more

This place has a large selection of plants and gardening supplies, but this place gets one star from me. Here is why 1. Everything is expensive. A plastic flower box at Home Depot is $2-3. At Mahoney's: $25. (please, it's plastic, has no decorations, and is made in China) 2. There were very few employees around, and they always seemed too busy to help. 3. I asked for help, was asked to wait. Waited 10-15 minutes, and decided to get one thing instead of the 5 that I had questions about 4. The cashier disappeared. Looked around and there was no one. I put down the one item that I was going to buy and walked out. Bottom line: Expensive and bad service (and/or lack thereof) means that my money will be going elsewhere. read more

OK, so I've mentioned previously my container gardening habit. Mahoney's is one of my higher class container-purchasing venues. I found out that their terracotta line is the same as a more local garden center, but that it's half the price. This is imporant! Also important is that there is a parking lot! There's a structure where you can go in and buy things even in the rain! The plant selection is frigging awesome. I'm at more than 5 stars here...and then I go to check out. And the service is SO SLOW. SO SLOW. I can't even stand how slow it is. It's slowtastic. It's like there goes a glacier and I'm holding about half a million pounds of random flowers you've never heard of and trying to balance it all and it's not even me anymore it's my great-great-granddaughter and FINALLY just take this effing money! read more

I have Mahoney's to thank for turning my back porch from a barren wasteland of grey wood into a pseudo-oasis of winter-blooming jasmine and succulents. Now all you damn JP plant thieves stay away! Unlike the plant-torture-prisons of Home Depot and Lowes, Mahoney's plants are almost universally healthy. In general, their prices on unpotted plants are pretty fair; their prices on pre-arranged pots or indoor plants can get a bit expensive. Likewise, they have a really good selection of planters and pots, but they're also a touch expensive. Their selection of shrubbery is not necessarily bigger than a Home Depot, but the plants themselves are much more interesting. read more

After living in condos, I finally had a place with some outdoor space. Before going to Mahoney's, I had done a lot of research but you just never know how well your plant/tree/shrub choices will work. I walked in with some ideas and started speaking to James. We talked about the layout of the yard, sun/shade requirements and some ideas of what I thought worked. He patiently listened and provided his expert guidance on everything from plant spacing to watering and even made some suggestions that we went with that look amazing. And he was fun to work with, really getting into the project. I had originally planned to go to a nursery outside the city and am so glad I stopped in at Mahoney's. We ended up getting everything there. I highly recommend them and will never go anywhere else for any of my landscaping and gardening needs. read more

I've come here a couple times so far in search of succulents, so I'll comment primarily on that. I have been mostly impressed. The garden center is very large and their succulents seem quite healthy (and the ones I've taken home have done very well). They keep a lot of echeveria, sedums, haworthias, and sempervivums outside, as well as some succulents that are more often used for ground cover. In the atrium, you'll find a number of other succulents, including kalanchoe, lithops, and a variety of cacti. The first time I visited the selection was much better than the second time. My only complaint would be related to the succulent selection: I wish there were more interesting or unusual varieties of plants. Mahoney's has some gorgeous, colorful succulent planters on display, but I couldn't find very many of the plants in those arrangement actually on sale at the store (a missed opportunity). Based on my visits, I wouldn't hold my breath for any rare finds (you might want to try ordering plants off Etsy if you have something really specific in mind). The variety of other plants (including vegetables) seemed to be very good, and there's also a whole room of different pots and trinkets for your garden. I would agree with other reviewers that the staff are sort of hands-off when it comes to customer service, but that's honestly the kind of customer service I like (I can't be alone in feeling relieved when no one tries to "help" me in a store). When I've asked questions of the staff, they seemed knowledgeable and friendly enough, and checkout is quick. The prices aren't too egregious, either. If you don't have access to a car, there are several bus lines that make stops almost right outside Mahoney's. read more

The plants and supplies here are so nicely priced. You can find good quality plants for your home without breaking the bank. The store is organized with arrows on the ground to enforce social distancing and limit the traffic. The staff is pretty helpful in answering questions and are always wearing masks. And transporting your plants is easy since they give you cardboard holders to take with you. Free parking lot for the business as well! read more

While this is no sprawling suburban garden center, the lot and the building's surroundings are jam-packed with almost every plant a garden needs (except trees). I visited Mahoney's on a Thursday afternoon and there were only 2 employees working - one whose job was to move the plants around and one who actually new about plants, but was busy at the register. I went back on Saturday and it was packed with people, but again, seemingly no knowledgable employees walking around to help with selection. However, went I finally decided on a plant, the cashier provided tons of helpful and useful infomation. If you know a lot about plants, this is your Heaven. This is my happy place. It is SO amazing and I always end up buying plants even when I say I won't. The staff is truly incredible and have helped answer so many questions for me. They even re-planted my withering Zee-zee for no charge and spent time explaining what to do to salvage him. The prices are also very good, so buy your houseplants and succulents here as opposed to the tiny boutique style stores who will charge you literally double. A nice, healthy snake plant was approx $15 here, and $45 for the same size at Fern in Boston (ridiculous!) Anyway- i love it! read more

I'm a Jew, so getting a real-life Christmas tree is a very new thing for me; however, it doesn't take a tree-hugger to know that Mahoney's makes the experience a great one! First, the staff is extremely friendly, even if the place is packed (like it was on the Sunday afternoon we went). They have the trees organized very well - small ones in one area, medium in another and huge, pretty $80+ ones in a section far from the others. We found a nice little apartment-sized tree for under $30 (and there were nice ones for under $20, too!) and it was quick and easy to find a helpy helper to give us a hand. They put it in the tree-shaker and gave it a little trim before wrapping it and bringing it to our car. While we waited for him to wrap up our tree, we wandered around the actual store - it was full of Christmassy stuff but also plenty of flowers, plants, bird-feeders, and garden equipment. Just like the outside, it was very organized inside. We didn't buy anything, but I know once spring comes around, I'll be there for my gardening needs. It was a great experience and I know this will be my go-to spot for all things foliage! read more

Mahoney's in Brighton tends to have a solid selection of airplants, potting materials, tropicals, ground cover plants, trees, etc. I shop here regularly for plants to grow in terrariums, and they often have a number of options. The only problem is, it's hit-or-miss. Catch them after a recent shipment, and they're flush with plants in every shape, color and size. Alternately, catch them before a shipment and it's like the Sahara in the shop, sparse, with limp, dried-out plants. Pricing is pretty variable, from pretty reasonable to outrageous; the mini tropicals are very reasonable at $2.50-$4/each, as are some of the mini succulents, but the airplants and potting supplies (moss, glass vessels, etc.) are ridiculous ($17 for an airplant that will almost certainly die on me in a month? No way). The staff is helpful, in the past I'd call ahead to find out when they'd be getting a shipment of plants in and plan my shopping trips around that. I've luckily never attempted to landscape a full-sized garden with plants from Mahoney's, as I think it'd bankrupt me, but I'll continue to be a small-scale customer! read more

I have given this place a few chances and ultimately, they have disappointed. I have purchased planters,plants, trees etc from this place and today will be the last. The manger Mark, I believe, has no customer service skills and a short fuse. The way he treats his employees in front of customers and the way he treats customers is a disgrace and demoralizing. He explicitly said things die and that I should expect things to not last. My plants were apparently sold to me at full price even though he knew that they were hit with frost and would live only for a short time. This has happened twice thus far. For someone to admit this and to sell the item knowingly is STEALING. Go to another nursery where you as a customer are appreciated. read more

If you want a beautiful glazed pot, a reasonably priced orchid, or a long-lasting Christmas tree, Mahoney's is the place to go. Indeed, Mahoney's has an entire room devoted to the art of the pot - and you can find a pot for any size or shape plant; Mahoney's has some of the cheapest and nicest orchids in town; and at Christmas time, Mahoney's trees are some of the best priced and nicest in town. I haven't been overly impressed by Mahoney's staff - it's often quite hard to find someone to answer a question, and sometimes the answers aren't all that helpful- but they are generally friendly. Now, if it's spring, and you want some hearty geraniums to put out on your porch, or a big bag of soil, I'd suggest going to Home Depot -- it's cheaper. But if you want something special, Mahoney's is a good option. read more

Great selection of herbs, decorative garden plants, flowers, and trees, as well as an impressive display of potting supplies, including pots, soil, and decorative items. Mahoney's, which is a local chain, also has very helpful and knowledgeable staff. They have carts if you buy a lot of stuff, and a parking lot, which makes transporting said stuff back to your vehicle easy. Prices are quite fair, and the plants look healthy. It's a great place to stock up on needed spices for the kitchen window, flowers for your barren, spring-time yard, or for hanging plants. Love 'em. read more

A real great place to buy a plant! The staff is great and knowledgeable, you can tell when asking them any questions that they really care about all things regarding horticulture. I walked away with a nice Bonsai tree, the guy in the gardening center was nice and helpful. I only took away one star, because of the prices on the accessories. I have a love/hate relationship with this place. They have a great selection. But like many urban nurseries, it's pretty much in the far end of pricing, especially for shrubs and trees. My problem is that I come here dreading the customer service. It's a family run thing and you can tell there is a lot of comfort in their positions. I look a bit younger but I am very knowledgeable about gardening and horticulture. I generally get brushed off. If I ask for a particular cultivar, I also get "I don't know" or "we carried it earlier in the season, might be out there." Ok thanks guy. The cashiers seem ever more annoyed with each customer keeping them from their inter-employee conversations. I once bought an airplant "jellyfish". The cashier guy insisted they're sold separately and ripped the Glued-in plant out. Until the girl next to him told him "I think they're sold together, call blah blah". They were. No apology. He rang me up for the now broken merchandise after accusing me of stealing. I was dumbfounded. Girls in the greenhouse look at you with disdain, one verbally freaking out once about customers walking over her barrier when putting out new plants. So then put all your shipment boxes on the sales floor before you open if you don't want customers looking to buy your merchandise. The young woman who manages the greenhouse is nice and seems knowledgeable. But God forbid you ask one of the others, "is this a Calathea "Freddie"? You get "It's an assorted calathea I don't know" as a response. Sigh. Here's my $200. Thanks guys for an amazing experience as always. read more

I've been frequenting Mahoney's for about a year now and feel so lucky to have a gem like this close to my apartment. Their selection of houseplants is always on par with trends I see in addition to reliable staple plants. I signed up for their rewards program and check their email newsletters for sales - I got a monstera deliciosa here on sale for $25 that most specialty plant stores would've charged double for given its size/maturity (it's thriving now!). I've found their staff to be patient, helpful, and knowledgeable about customer questions, even on busy weekend days, and their prices on average to be lower than other small plant shops in the city. The prices may not be as low as big box stores, but the plants at Mahoney's receive far better care and maintenance and will repay you with faster growth when you take them home. I feel good giving my money to local business and encouraged all my friends to do the same. read more

The service is so rude that my family, friends and I won't be doing business there ever again. I was just at mahoneys shopping for Christmas ornaments, wreaths and other decorations when someone knocked over a small bowl of ornaments. One of the employees came over and accused me of knocking it over (I hadn't but started to pick it up) and said loudly and rudely with a huge attitude "all you ladies and your bags, you're never careful, you always break things! Why weren't you more careful!you ladies are the worst." I hadn't even done anything! So I left and certainly didn't buy all the things in my basket that I'd come for. read more

We have shopped here for many years and been satisfied, but today changed all that. I selected several six-packs of pansies from a table on which there were at least two signs saying that six packs were selling for $3.98. The plants were marked with a significantly higher price, but I figured they were on sale. When they were rung up, I questioned the price and was told that they were not on sale. I offered to show the manager (James) the sign because I said I thought it was very misleading. He said the signs were changed around all the time and he was too busy to come look at it with me. When I protested, he said he didn't care. Wow. Needless to say, I didn't buy anything today and will never go back. read more

Bought a $50 jasmine tree from Mahoney's for my new apartment in September. Come October, there were both spider mites (expected) and strange bubbling scale-like growths on all of the branches (unexpected). Concerned I took clippings back to Mahoneys to ask what was up with the plant they sold me. They had one garden expert take a look at my clippings and called in another- and nobody could figure out what it was! So what did they do? They offered me an entirely new jasmine plant for free. Not to try some horticultural oil, or to cut back, they just said have a brand new one because we sold you a tree that didn't work out. This Mahoneys went way above and beyond my expectations and I would recommend them to anyone! read more

The 3 stars is an overall of my experiences at Mahoneys. If you are looking for something special, such as Jasmine trees, juniper or etc.. this will be the place to go. Their selections are amazing and I would give them 5 stars for what they keep in store. However, similar to the other reviews I have to say my experience via customer service has not been consistent or the best, in comparison to other botanist/nurseries that I have visited in the past. Depending on who you ask for help, you may end up having a great or horrible experience. The lady who owns Mahoneys is such a sweetheart. During Christmas. She wrapped our Christmas tree ( with another associate ) and did it with a smile. While other times u get other ppl. Who basically doesnt seem to altruistically care about helping me. So my reviews are mixed, but I am always on the lookout for the owner who is just wonderful. read more

If I could give Mahoneys a negative 5 star review, I would. Beautiful plants, but very expensive and the worst customer service imaginable. I bought 5 very expensive ferns a month ago and all of them were dying. Took pictures and snipping of dead fern leaves back two weeks ago. Mahoneys employee told me to try watering more or less and that they had a 90 day return policy if I brought in receipt and plants. I tried more and less watering for two weeks on different plants and they continued to die. I just brought them in and after making me wait for 10 minutes, they refused to give me a refund or even a store credit. I am am Member if their "Loyalty" program and have spent thousands of dollars there over the past 5 years. Avoid this horrible business at all costs. read more

Went to the Wayland store at 2 on a Friday. Very good plant selection but felt that staff were indifferent. Several folks in blue shirts mulling around but none offered assistance or guidance. Spent $150 on perennials but left feeling it's not a nice place to work. Later that day I picked up a wheelbarrow at a box store and got better service. At Mahoney's I was too long waiting for cashier to finish talking with colleague who was busy texting. Left scratching my head. Will only go back, if at all, because of plant selection. read more

I've been looking for a decent garden center and I have to say it's hard to come by in Boston. I was pleasantly surprised though when I can here! I can finally stop trying to buy bug infested plants at home depot! They have a nice selection of both indoor and outdoor plants. I went there on a really busy Saturday so there wasn't much help around for customer device but I didn't have any questions. I love it that they have a rewards card too!
