Where do you get a king cake in Tennessee? Magpies! I had never tried magpies before, but was desperate for a good king cake not a dry one from the grocery store. I've had king cake from places like Dong Phuong so my standards for king cake can be pretty high. Ordering online was easy, pickup went smooth (the inside of magpies is cute and everyone working was very nice), and the cake itself was delicious! I got the cream cheese and it wasn't dry at all and tasted just like a piece of Louisiana. My biggest complaint is that I have to wait another year to get it again! But that's okay just means I'll have to try some of the other treats that magpie offers now that I know how good they are at what they do. read more

The chocolate cherry wheat-free cookies are divine, and the pecan pie might be one of the best I've ever tasted. The bakery itself is not a sit-down place--you pick up your treats, which is fantastic--and there's ample parking, making it very convenient. The only disappointment was the service. I asked a young salesperson about the cookie ingredients, and she simply shrugged and said she didn't know. While I appreciate honesty, it was surprising--and a little embarrassing--that she didn't make any effort to find out. That's not the kind of customer service expected at a bakery of this caliber. Everything looked so delicious and I really liked the sample of the brownie I tried.... that I couldn't decide what to get. So I got multiple things lol. I was greeted warmly and all my questions about the different flavors were answered. It's a really cute location but I'm not sure if parking might be difficult at a more crowded time. S'Mores Brownie--this was extra messy to eat in a good way. I expected a bit more of a toasted marshmallow flavor. There was a bit too much marshmallow for the thickness of the brownie and I do love marshmallow. The graham cracker crust made it a bit dry. I do prefer a more fudgy brownie but the rich chocolate flavor was tasty. Adventureful Girl Scout Cookie Cupcake--the cake was a touch crumbly and maybe some people might find there to be a lot of frosting. The frosting was very tasty, though a bit grainy. It tasted like true chocolate buttercream- as in made with real butter Chocolate Chip cookie- a tasty classic version of its lots of big chips! Samoa Brownie- this was perfection. I could eat an entire pan of these. This was a more fudgy brownie, maybe the buttercream kept it more moist? The caramel buttercream and toasted coconut were the perfect toppings. We can't wait to go into the actual shop because we noticed their pecan pies at Kroger and were excited to support local. This pecan pie was the unanimous favorite of our three desserts. Such rich and buttery crust, great crispy caramelization on the top, and just beautiful to look at with the leaf detail. It was somewhat pricey at $35 but totally worth it...especially given its large size and pretty on par with costs of other local bakeries. My son had a meet in Knoxville on his birthday, so to make it special, we decided to throw him a party before the meet. Not familiar with the area, I turned to Yelp for the best, closest bakery to where the party would be. Magpies came up and after drooling over their treats on their website and Instagram, I knew they would be the perfect place to order his birthday cake. My son's only request was for it to be chocolate. He didn't have a preference for the frosting. I saw on their IG page that they offer oreo cakes and he loves oreos. I called the bakery and asked if they could make a chocolate cake with oreo frosting. They said no problem. I ordered a quarter sheet and arranged a date and time for pick-up. Pick-up went smoothly. The bakery has an open concept and you can see the bakers prep right behind the counter. Very cool. I was greeted and helped right away. I've ordered plenty of quarter sheet cakes before but I've never seen one this thick! It was so thick the box barely closed. It was heavy, too! Everyone at the party loved the cake and asked where I got it from. The cake was perfectly moist and the frosting was light and had the right amount of sweetness to it. I had never been in and they had so much to choose from. The service was amazing. The staff was so patient with me, and took the time to explain every treat to make sure I got things he would enjoy. You know I check in there like 4 times a day for good reason. :) But you can also find Magpies for dessert at Holly's or at Three Rivers. Just check out online where they're sold. These cakes are GOOD! Hands-down the best I've had in Knoxville. You get what you pay for. A small handful of mini cupcakes will cost you $7-9. Oh but that lemon raspberry! Delish! They served this cupcake at the Bijou for Dolly's birthday event and I went nuts. Nom nom nom. And I also love the chocolate fudge and the caramel macchiato cupcake. It's a chocolate lover's dream. I still remember the lemon blueberry cake we had 10 or 11 years ago for a parents friends birthday that was the best cake I've ever had. I am an emotional eater and catch myself reaching for the mini cupcakes on the shelves of three rivers in times of turmoil. They had mocha, red velvet, and strawberry flavors; all of which I tried and all of which were moist and not too sweet. Great find! To the left is a sale section. That's where you should go! The deals are sick. Extremely cheap for one day off goods. I came here for a birthday cake for another yelper and went with the oreo cheesecake. Magpies is hands-down the best bakery I've visited in Knoxville. Being a chocolate lover, my favorite cupcake is the chocolate fudge cupcake. OMG. It is heavenly! Magpies also handled a cake for my bridal shower, plus a small cake and cupcakes for our wedding. (We had a cupcake tower instead of a traditional wedding cake.) When I added red cupcakes with white polka dots (a la Super Mario's power-up mushrooms - our cake topper was a castle with Mario and Peach figurines on top), Magpies added little mushroom heads to the border around the bottom of my bridal shower cake. It was an awesome surprise, and our small cake from the top of the cupcake tower was every bit as delicious one year later. My family makes it a point to buy cakes from Magpies for just about every celebration. They made the cake for our Race for the Cure after party, for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary, and for a multitude of birthdays. They are every bit as delicious - maybe more so, if you can believe it - as the cupcakes. Their cakes are moist, and the icing is to die for. I just can't rave about this place enough!
