I went into Magpie Knits got the first time yesterday to look for some yarn because I just started getting into crocheting. They have so many colors and types of yarn that seem like really good quality. The range I personally saw was anywhere from $9-$34, but I didn't walk around there checking every price. I did end up getting a $9 cranberry color yarn that is super soft and they put it into a ball for me (I forgot what that's called....remember, beginner here haha). Overall, I definitely would go back again! Maybe not all the time as I'm starting out, but, if I do get better, then for sure. I also asked about classes and they said if more are interested in crochet classes they will add some, or I could do a private lesson. I also feel the need to say something about that one star review below that would cause any hesitation from going there. While I was not greeted after coming in (something that doesn't bother me personally), except by an adorable doggy, there are people in there that you can go up to and ask for help if you needed to. I will say this, I definitely wandered around staring at yarn for a few minutes waiting to see if someone would ask if I needed help and eventually someone did after making eye contact. So, in my opinion, you definitely have to just find someone and ask for help. Everyone was really nice though. read more

Fantastic shop, huge variety of yarns. My mom was visiting, and we hit five yarn shops between Philadelphia and Virginia, and this was the largest with the widest variety of yarns - as well as a huge range of colors. Prices were equivalent with the other shops we visited (seems like everyone carries Malabrigo Sock, and if I recall correctly I think it was actually a dollar cheaper here than we'd seen it elsewhere.) We also got some nice self patterning yarns too that we hadn't seen anywhere else. read more

What a lovely place! I went in last Monday with a few things in mind and was able to find everything I needed. The yarn colors are so tempting, so I ended up buying an extra skein that I'm using now, and the colors are glorious! The employee (I'm not good at remembering names) was so friendly and helpful. When I told her that I often use YouTube to help me out with some procedures, she suggested a website that looks like it will be perfect. My friend who was with me is not a knitter, but she said she felt very welcome in the shop. Bonus: there's an adorable little dog in the store that melted this dog-lover's heart. I don't get to Charlottesville very often, but when I do I will be sure to make time for another visit to Magpie Knits. read more

Went in and wasn't greeted. No one said a word to me while I was there despite looking up and seeing me on multiple occasions as I browsed. Finally when I was frustrated that no one wanted to help me and was on my way out the door an employee finally said to let them know if I needed anything. But by that point (10-15 minutes of wandering the store) I was already done. Additionally their prices are much higher than comparable yarn shops. So between the pricing and customer service you're probably better off going somewhere else. read more

This is a great fiber place, with a good mix of less expensive, more commercial yarn like Cascade and Berroco, and more boutique yarns like SpiritTrail Fiberworks and Neighborhood Fiber Company. Beyond the yarn, my husband found fiber for his needle felting and some needle felting kits that looked good. And I lingered a bit over the needle point supplies, which was another good mix of inexpensive (DMC) and higher quality (silk floss). They also carried the usual assortment of notions, as well as great bags, cards and coffee mugs, and you could even buy finished goods! You know, in case you didn't start your Christmas knitting early enough! And on top of all of that, we had a friendly conversation with employee on duty, who was extremely helpful. An upscale yarn shop with all the essentials for learning to knit, or creating a masterpiece. This shop easily services the novice to the experienced and everything in between. They have a large selection of yarn. I saw everything from expensive, to locally sourced and dyed, to hard to find materials that most people have to order from online. There is also a large selection of patterns and pattern books that you wont find in a big-box craft store. The staff was also very knowledgeable and helpful. They offer knitting classes as well! This is a great little shop on the historic Downtown mall. The owner is the greatest. She's always friendly, helpful, and has the patience of Job. She has helped me "tink" many a project without getting frustrated with me or being rude (which unfortunately I have encountered at other places, and not in Charlottesville, I should add). I highly recommend stopping in and taking a peek. The different array of yarns and colors is enough to bring a happy, fuzzy feeling to your psyche. Even if you don't knit or crochet, stop by anyway. Stopped in here after a hiking expedition as my dear friend is an avid knitter. Not going to lie, I really know nothing about yarn, other than I like things made out of it. I absolutely love The Needle Lady. My husband and I were killing some time over the weekend while our sons were taking a class at UVA. The shop is located in a pedestrian outdoor mall. Most of the shops, including this one are upscale. However, The Needle Lady offers a WIDE VARIETY of yarns, needles, etc. with many examples of knit items next to the yarn. Yarns range from $5 for 100 grams to $30 for 100 grams. There really is something for everyone here! The manager (owner?) tending the shop the day I visited was friendly; she greeted us at the entrance and allowed me to explore on my own without being too pushy. She was available if I had questions. I observed her giving an impromptu education session to another patron and she seemed very knowledgeable. I made my decision to purchase a few hanks of yarn and the manager asked me about my projects and even wound my yarn for me. It is hard to find friendly, personal service like this! read more

Wonderful little store I stumped upon as we were walking through Old Town Charlottesville. They have a wonderful selection of is yarns and just he nicest people. There were 3 people sitting there and I asked them to teach me to knit and without hesitation that graciously & patiently showed me. I already knew how to crochet but knitting always escaped me. Really good experience at The Needle Lady. I came in not having knitted for several decades, and Kristin and Jackie helped me pick the righ yarn and needles for my project. I stopped in on a whim during a day trip from Richmond. The store was bright, clean, well organized and very comfortable. I've never knitted before but had been thinking about learning. On a whim I asked the person working for assistance and she eagerly explained the basics of different yarns and needles. She reviewed different processed and then sat down and taught me how to knit!
