Flat White
Ria G.

I guess people are tired of their three-in-ones because craft coffees seem to be trending in Manila these days. One of the places I love is Magnum Opus, along BF bustling Aguirre street. To those not familiar with the area, the place is hard to miss because they've put up a big sign to help you find you way. The place is small and quaint and doesn't necessarily feel like the kind of coffee shop you'll sit and read in, but more like chat and work in. I personally like to sit at the bar because I enjoy watching the baristas craft my coffee. They've got machinery that I've heard the owner paid a whole lot for simply because it really is a hobby of his--I'm just glad he's sharing really good coffee to the rest of us who can't afford fancy paraphernalia. Their brew is strong, which is a bold move considering a lot of Filipinos like their coffee milky. But I guess that's not to take away from the quality of the beans. I however prefer the Flat White or their Latte for a bit of creaminess in my cup. The foam art is another thing that you should watch out for because it really shows off how artisanal this place is. Like I said, their coffee is strong, so order a slice of cheesecake for a punch of sweetness.

Having experienced living in BF for a couple of years, what I really love about this village is…read morethat it has a little bit of everything from outside its own bubble that it leaves you with very little excuse to venture out into the world (except for, you know, going to work/school). Even if it's a bit of arts and culture you're craving, BF's got you covered, too. Artists Haven Gallery and Cafe is along Aguirre Avenue, the subdivisions' main road known also as a foodie destination in itself. From the outside it does seem really small, like what might be just another gallery.. perhaps a room and some paintings. Little did I know that it's truly like a "haven" for artists--spacious and beautifully designed interiors, a well-curated collection of paintings and sculptures, and they have a cafe too! It's a place that anyone would really be inspired to create in, or if you'd simply want to forget that you're in BF for a while, this is the place to go to "rejuvenate" your soul... or something. They also offer art workshops for kids and adults, too! If you're not much into the arts, don't walk away, they have a charming cafe for you. The dishes are named after painters! Though for vegetarians/vegans, there are only a few veggie options: just soups and salads, for which you'd have to still request to remove ingredients X, Y and Z from, just ask). I tried one of their best sellers, Crispy Suman con Tsokolate (you can request for dairy to be omitted), which is a good choice for a light merienda. I was able to chat with the owner of a place, and news is that they're coming up with regular events that involve live music and wine!

For me, this is both a magic-inspired place and a magical place. Once I step inside, I am instantly immersed in its spell, with its walls in different pastel shades, paper cutout-like towering trees, colorful chalk art (The art in the long chalk board on the wall changes. On one Christmas we went the art had a Christmas theme), decoupaged tables, and charming collectibles like masks and bright birdcages. And, there's the gift shop with, yes, magic wands ala Harry Potter, tarot cards and other magical items. And, just look at the menu - there's a shake called Love Potion #29, and an onion soup called Gayuma, among other things! My favorites are Wands In A Cauldron (fresh and crunchy fries in a mini-cauldron) and the Harry Potter-inspired Butter Brew, which is sweet with just the right kick. They also have special drinks just for Christmas, and my favorite is the spiked eggnog.

Here, you get to spend an hour and a half with doggies plus have a free drink (from a selection) for only Php190! Bring on the squishy puppies! The inside of the pup pen is clean and, when they pee or poo, the staff cleans it immediately. There is also a big bottle of alcohol gel at the corner for when you go in and out of the pen. So, does the place smell? Not at all! My fave puppies were Simba the Pompom (a bit of a princess, even though he is a boy) and Arrow the Corgi (sooo hyper and really loves to cuddle with people). We were lucky to meet all of the dogs because we arrive in between the shifts. They are all so lovable! The downside is that the puppy cafe is almost always booked during weekends. When I went, you couldn't even make a reservation. So, we had to wait for an available slot. Also, the staff needs to be more firm with clients about the time they spend in the pen. Just to assure that the next batch of puppy lovers get to spend time with the puppies! Their food and drinks are okay. Nothing worth talking about. Note: You must remove your shoes and wear rubber slippers. Best you bring socks when you go here! :)
