The coffee gods must have liked Makati a lot because they've decided to stay here and shack up. It's so wonderful to be a coffee lover in this city because of all the choices you have in here. Whether you simply must have the latest handpicked variant from Guatemala aeropressed for your pleasure, or you just want a solid latte in a homey joint, Makati has it for you. Case in point, Local Edition. Tucked in a rather cozy part of Legaspi Village, Local Edition looks as if it wants to be YOUR neighborhood cafe. It's warm, inviting, and yes, the coffee's on point and the food is good. The first two times I've been here, they have a photo exhibit for a biking group on display. I don't know if that's a permanent display or something in rotation, but it was a nice touch. Local Edition seems to have its doors open for local initiatives as well, and that's commendable. Local Edition also seem to be doing it right by local farmers and producers by sourcing coffee locally (A lot of third wave coffee joints don't, admittedly) and featuring some local products such as Bayani Brew and Stanford & Shaw Ginger Ale. All in all, a good, solid coffee place worth checking out and returning to. Good job. read more

I love unique and innovative businesses that are not cookie-cutter and are not part of giant international chains. I love seeing locals thinking up wonderful concepts and working hard to bring it to the public. Local Edition is an example of such drive and spirit. The owners, Julia and co. are very enthusiastic about what they are doing. I have had the pleasure of chatting with them a few months back, and they are brimming with ideas on how they can make their coffee shop a more socially relevant space. Tucked in a quiet street in the bustling Makati central district, Local Edition is almost like a retreat. When the chain coffee shops in the surrounding areas are always filled with loud and annoying patrons who can't keep their voices down, Local Edition is a quite respite - a place where you can settle with your computer or a book, and work away with the hours melting away unnoticed. The smell of the wonderful coffee fills the small space, and it puts you in a working mood right away. What I love about Local Edition is the changing store layout. The owners envisioned their premises to be an art gallery of sorts, and they would usually invite organizations to display material that can bring consciousness and awareness about social issues. Politics and social issues aside, the store also serves as a space where visual artists can mount their small exhibits. Every time I visit the store, there is something new to see on the walls. Recently, they also launched a book exchange nook where people can just leave books and take some in a honesty system. I always try to visit the store whenever I am in the area. read more

Local Edition has been one of my favorite places to get anything done. The space is compact and adequately cozy. The furnishings consist of simple wooden tables and chairs with white walls, but it's the constant featuring of local art movements on their walls that make it easy to feel relaxed, but also motivated and creative. The wi-fi is fast and the food is great. Their coffee is good, but I'm not a great judge of good coffee, although if you need a measure of my taste, you should know I am NOT a fan of Starbucks drinks (that stuff is basically ice cream) and I like actually tasting the coffee in things. They have a roster of unusual flavors (a lot are filipino themed, think salabat and yema infused in coffee and tea!) BUT! You've got to try any of their desserts, plus their deviled egg salad and grilled cheese sandwich. They top off their drinks with a single iced gem treat, which is such an adorable way to induce nostalgia and encourage more local love. That is the cafe's main thrust by the way, which seals the deal for me. read more

I think I have already stated in a lot of my reviews that I am not a huge fan of coffee. In fact, I hate it. But, why am I still making reviews of coffee shops? I usually go to coffee shops not for the coffee, but for the chill and relaxing atmosphere. I think most people agree with me when I say that the main reason why we stay in places like coffee shops is because of the setting. Most coffee shops are conducive to productivity. It's where we usually go to whenever we have to study for something or we need to finish our work. What I like about Local Edition is that they serve both coffee and tea. I haven't really tried any of their pure coffee-based drinks, but I already had a taste of their coffee and tea combination. They have Black Oolong, Earl Grey, Classic Green, Vibrant Green, and Ruby Red tea. You can choose to add tea with a cup of espresso or cappuccino to achieve a drink with a well-balanced flavor. Local Edition is one of the newer establishments that count themselves as part of the the "third wave" coffee revolution (which means it's owned by individuals rather than big companies, although Toby's is still considered third wave despite having branches all over). It sits on Perea street, a growing foodie hotspot in Makati, and is much similar to other cafes' design in the sense that it uses a lot of solid colors and wood to the whole theme. I quite liked the feel of it being a homey, neighborhood coffee shop, as well as the carved wood artworks that brightened up the white walls. The bookshelves where they encouraged people to read and share their own used books was another touch I quite liked too. (#TheBookProjectManila! Look it up.) But let me start nitpicking: on their logo. I don't like how they combined serif and sans serif to it, and even more the "est.2014" only just seemed... well, tacky. It only highlighted the fact that they're relatively new to the business. And let's talk coffee: I don't like it. I don't add sugar or milk to my coffee, preferring it nice and strong like a solid punch of caffeine to the brain. The cold brew was less of a punch and more of a pummeling. I'm not sure if it's overbrewed or they burnt the beans when roasting-- but it's not something I would look forward to having again. Their desserts and cookies are pretty overpriced. Who wants to pay 70-80 pesos of a tiny cookie or dessert bar? Not me. read more

If you are a coffee lover like me and are tired of hanging out in Starbucks, don't worry, there is a place which is refreshingly different for a change. Local Edition is the place to be. Spacious and comfortable sitting arrangement it's a place I don't mind hanging out, catching up on a meeting or just reading. Their coffee and tea choices are decent with some house specialties like Coco Ginger Tea and Honey Milk tea which is quite different in flavor. They have decent food and beverages to choose from with free Wi-Fi as well. However, I liked two things about this place the most: "The book Project Manila" which encourages paper book reading by exchanging books. So if you have a book, you can leave that book at the café and pick up the book that you want to read. So it purely works on trust. And also, this place gives you space to express your ideas and showcase your creative talent. They have a wall, which has a theme that changes every two months. And I was told the ideas come from the people who visit the place. So if you have an idea or theme, get going and paint the wall!! read more

One of the few things I love is cafe hopping. It's one thing to check out new coffee shops around, it's another thing to taste what each store has to offer. Local Edition brings to the table a coffee shop that's a bit interactive. Plants displayed around the area are actually for sale. The menu is straightforward and simple. Not much fuss about the complications of food as it serves good, basic food. My absolutely go to dessert to order is Aly's Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Pair it up with the house coffee and you're good to go. If you're feeling a bit hungry, you can always go for their sandwiches and panini. You can opt to relax and unwind outside but on a breezy, I suggest you go outside and chill there. The overall ambiance of this cafe something I like in a cafe - simple yet classy. read more

Local Edition is another one of those cafes that are popping up around the Metro that is well-designed, quirky, and no-nonsense. Situated towards the end of Perea St., the clean lines and wood touches beckon towards coffee (and perhaps simultaneous cigarette) breaks and afternoon chats. I personally find myself becoming a part of the furniture from time to time, because I find the place conducive to working. The cafe is well-lit, with near floor to ceiling windows up front. There are also outlets situated by the tables for those who want to plug into the ether, este, internet. You'll find the day's papers on the side, as well as magazines and books from #TheBookProjectManila *. The coffee is pretty decent. I normally order the Tablocha, which is simply a blend of coffee with local Tablea chocolate. Every cup comes with one of those mini iced star gems that you probably had at recess as a kid. This personal touch I find highly amusing. The pastries up front are always changing, but I usually order one of their chocolate chip cookies to sate my sweet tooth. If I'm looking for something slightly more filling, I'll order their grilled cheese. While I prefer more of a toasty exterior to my grilled cheese, I cannot complain about the filling of Local Edition's version. The creamy blend of cheeses on this one is absolutely spot-on. To make a neighborhood feel like home, it's always good to have a local café that you can call your own. Much like what Central Perk is to the cast of Friends, Local Edition is to me. Shaded by a humongous tree, Local Edition sits in a cozy, leafy corner of Perea Street in Makati. The café is perfect for catching up with friends or for catching up on work. It's small outdoor space with its tables and benches looking out into the street are always an inviting sight. The inside of the café itself is small but the space is well utilized. Every now and then, the café invites artists to dress up a section of the wall and it's always a pleasure to see what new visual takes residence in Local Edition. The café itself, being called Local Edition, serves only locally sourced beans for its coffee. There is also the option of tea for the non-caffeine drinkers. The 1st time we we went we were looking forward to experiencing the good reviews it had. The dishes we wanted were not available, yet it was in the menu. A piece of masking tape to temporarily cover what has run out for the day would help lessen the frustration of the potential customers. It dampened our excitement and left. Today is Saturday. The sign on your door shos you open at 8:30am as does your information in Yelp. It is 10:15am yet your establishment is closed. Please get your act together. I recommend coffee shops in the area to many friends locally and from overseas. I may just have to get this off the list! read more

It's located in a quiet street in the middle of the business district. I love that they serve local coffee (all local, at that!) When I use to be near it I was always there for my usual cold brew or flat white - both are great and I take them accordingly to my mood.
