What once was known as classic Chateau 1771 has now evolved into the more modern Café 1771 and I for one welcome that change with open arms as the most important thing remains: their food is still killer. I come to 1771 whenever I want go somewhere nice as I truly believe that one's surroundings have the power to affect their mood and attitude. The interior is very elegant and easy on the eyes and the service is excellent as well. Some of my favorites on the menu are French toast with bacon, kesong puti fried in butter, salbacho pizza, lime butter prawns, and cocotte lamb shoulder chops.

I celebrated my 29th birthday here over a simple lunch with a friend. The place looks like a page out of a home magazine with their interiors having a fancy vibe to it. I ordered their Lemon Chicken and Rice on the side and was satisfied by the flavor, as it wasn't too sour and a bit sweet for my taste. I ended my lunch with their slice of Valrhona Chocolate cake that is good for two people with a sweet tooth. As we were about to leave it started to rain really hard and since parking was a few steps away and we didn't have any umbrella, one of the servers volunteered to walk us to our parking slot and use his umbrella. Plus points for great customer service absolutely.

But with the likes of…read moreFully Booked taking the bookstore game up a notch, holding events, film viewings, classes and building in house cafes, I was sure it will only take time before NB joins the bandwagon. Just recently, I was able to discover a quaint little coffee shop in one of the buildings along Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong City named Books & Beans. It stands right beside a National Bookstore branch, which is also apparently the headquarters of the popular bookstore. When I first found out about Books & Beans, I immediately decided to check on their menu. They've got a slew of different caffeinated drinks, fruit shakes and milkshakes, plus an assortment of desserts and rice meals. Prices aren't as steep compared to cafes like UCC, Starbucks or Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. The place, as I've mentioned earlier, is simple and quaint - a pretty good alternative to other shops and restos. It's got a cute little bar where they take your order, with small stacks of books on shelves. Not too mainstream but not hipster enough either. I only got to try their Iced Almond Roca when I swung by. There wasn't anything spectacular about the drink - just plain iced coffee with an aftertaste of almond. A little too sweet for my liking, to be honest. I had the drink to go so I'm still unsure of how they present their coffee or their plated dishes. But I am excited to go back and try out their food. Their dishes are 130-150 pesos on average - not bad for café grub, right?

From what I read on other reviews this is supposed to be a third wave style coffee house. I…read morewouldn't really call it that. The coffee was fine, nothing amazing. It was very loud in there, as well, but not because of people. There is a serious sound system in there that is playing music and an unnecessary loud volume. I got there at 920am, when it was supposed to have already open, but the closed sign was up and there was no one to open the door. I had to find a security guard to get someone. Apparently the workers don't really expect anyone to arrive that early. The seating is very strange, both in layout and furniture choice. The booths feel like the tables are 4 inches too tall. It's like sitting in a giant's table. Also the are 4 person's deep which makes getting in and out the booths ackward. We had a meeting here so it was nice because it was empty but I think I lost my voice from having to have to sit over the speakers. Not coming back, but i wouldn't not recommend it. It's just not a place that suits my needs

The coffee is on point, certainly comparable to any third waver you can throw at them. They also have unique items on the menu which you should try out. Am totally in love with the Dirty Chai; correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the only joint in Manila that offers this wonderful drink. I would have given this place five stars just for the Dirty Chai, but coupled with a nice location, comfy interiors, great ambiance, good food, and really fast internet, Where's Marcel just totally wins. You actually end up feeling sorry for the schmucks holing themselves up at the Starbucks across the street. They are missing out on a great experience because of their brand fixation.
