I spent hours speaking with her, confided in her, respected her guidance, and regarded her as someone safe. I also supported her professionally in a significant way because I genuinely believed in her and in the work she was doing. That trust is gone. What changed my opinion was not a single disagreement. It was discovering that the compassion and understanding I believed I was receiving directly did not match what was being said about me elsewhere. That matters profoundly when someone works in a profession built on intuition, trust, emotional vulnerability, and guidance. I was going through an extraordinarily difficult period in my life, including serious medical circumstances and significant emotional strain. Carol knew that. She also knew how vulnerable I was and how much weight I placed on her perspective. Despite that, I later learned that she had been expressing judgments about me to my wife while interacting with me very differently in private. When I became hurt by something that happened, I did not attack her, publicly shame her, or retaliate. I reached out directly and asked if we could meet because I wanted to understand what had happened and repair the relationship. She told me she was busy and would check her schedule. She never contacted me again. Nearly two months later, however, she had no difficulty reaching out to my wife to request changes to marketing materials that I had personally created through my own business. My wife does not run my creative business. That moment told me everything I needed to know. Ignoring someone when they ask to repair a personal rupture is one thing. Deliberately bypassing that same person when you later want something related to their professional work is another. It felt dismissive, avoidant, and profoundly disrespectful. I gave an enormous amount of my time, creative labor, professional expertise, encouragement, and trust to this relationship without expecting anything in return. I did so because I believed I was supporting someone who had positively affected my life. I now understand that relationship very differently. The most painful part is not that Carol and I are no longer close. It is realizing that someone I once regarded almost as a maternal figure could know how deeply I trusted her, know how much I was struggling, accept the generosity I extended, speak critically about me behind the scenes, and then avoid a direct conversation when I asked for one. For a profession that depends so heavily on trust, discernment, authenticity, and emotional integrity, that discrepancy is impossible for me to overlook. People are free to form their own opinions and have their own experiences. This is mine. I once recommended Carol enthusiastically. I no longer recommend her at all.

(I myself come from an *extremely* Christian family -- Bible Belt! -- but I have since learned the truth about that religion and am no longer the slightest bit Christian nor will I ever be again.) As I said, both my husband and I are *extremely* intuitive and can sense people's energy, and the energy we get from this man is "used car salesman" with not a shred of spirituality. In any case, his pushy car-salesman attitude was the real issue. That said, my husband and I did stop by the Youngfield store a couple days ago, and although we didn't encounter "Mr Mask" (and mask or not, the attitude was the problem) the lady at the register was also very "car-lot sales-y", listing off all the things on sale, the readings going on that day, etc. While some might find that helpful, we found it rather off-putting, as we had come in for a specific purpose, not a 3-minute sales pitch. There is nothing wrong with welcoming customers in and saying, "If you need any help just let us know." (Ashley at the 44th Ave location got this right, every time!) But the pushy attitude we've repeatedly encountered makes us reluctant to shop here.

As many of you may know, the former K-Mart space at Colfax/Chambers is in the process of being converted to a soon-to-open pan-Latin marketplace called El Paseo Colorado. But what you may not be aware of is that the area out front also plays host to a bevy of food trucks and other vendors, collectively known as "the flavor corner", or La Esquina Del Sabor. Although some trucks are present most days of the week, I personally would advise (pro-tip incoming) folks to go on the weekends to get the fullest idea of what's available. As you will see, your culinary options here originate from multiple Latin American countries. For example, you can sidle up to I Am Venezuela and sample the very friendly owner's Tequeños (gooey cheese breadsticks) or Cachapas (seductively sweet corn cakes). Or, have a gander at the pupusas (Salvadoran stuffed pockets made with a finer grind of corn flour and bursting with beans, or pork, or Loroco flower....) at Antojitos Salvadoreños Anita. But wait! There's more! Looking at La Esquina in its entirety, I would have to say that the majority of the food vendors proudly represent various regions and cooking styles of Mexico. For example, on a recent visit I stopped by Lonches El Bañado and tried one of the Juarez-style sandwiches from which the truck derives its name (a lonche is a bit like a torta, but more meat-centric). I chose the Colita De Pavo (turkey tail) option, which was chock-full of moist, expertly-cooked fowl flesh. But you might also enjoy the Sinaloan roast chickens (or Pollo Asado, if you prefer) at Tacos Y Pollos Za-Za-Za, suitably smoky and redolent in a garlic-citrus marinade, or the indulgent Quesabirria (a quesadilla enhanced by rich beef stew with origins in the western state of Jalisco) from Tacos El Reydesel. And of course, you have to end with a little Conchinieve (ice cream bun) or banana split from Neveria La Crisis (best dessert parlor name evah!), don't you? So anyway, this gives you an idea of what to expect at La Esquina Del Sabor, so when are you going?
