There are two different tours; one includes the town and goes about 300 feet into one level of the mine. The other goes deeper into the mine. We did the first one and enjoyed it a lot. About half of it is a guided, personal tour of Calico. Histories of original buildings, area geology, detailed information about Walter Knott's connection to the town and how he restored it. You can ask lots of questions, making this a personalized tour. It seems pricey at first at $50 per person, but it is a solid 4 hours and is the best way to get an understanding of the town and it's history. It also feels pretty good to spoend some time in the mine at ~55 degrees when it's 112 outside... Next time I go we will do the 2nd tour, the in-depth mine tour.

Mind you this is on the actual day of Easter, so all other events my child and cousins were invited to were turned down just to come here. Now I will mention my niece and her family came some 7-8hrs just to attend this event for they're children....after burning some $30.+ on gas and no telling what my niece spent to get to this event just on fuel alone. When you do make your way inside, you're greeting with old portraits and slowed down creepy music. Through the dim corridors you'll find a giant spider with glowing eyes, and a medical lab of torture, among other fiends and friends. The whole thing is only about one and a half minutes, but the final room really leaves an impression.

But what really makes this 5 stars is the uniqueness of the scares. This isn't your typical conga line of jump scares (though they have those too, and they'll get you!). The actors here are on another level. They don't just pop out and yell "boo." They interact, they stalk, they emerge from places you'd never expect.  You can tell this was built by people who LOVE Halloween. It has the scale of a big theme park, but the heart and originality of a passion project. Don't even think about it, just go. This is the new standard for haunts in my book. The monsters were awesome and the maze was massive and really well put together and laid out! Some dark spots, lots of black light effects, strobes in the haunted ride area, a crazy tunnel room and 3D glasses provided. Really a must see if you are in the area. After Game 7 of the World Series, we went to check it out. All I can say is . . . WOW!!! I cannot even begin to describe how unbelievable this experience was. It was like a carnival with moving parts everywhere. I can't imagine the time spent to assemble (and disassemble) this amazing display. The tunnel with the spinning lights was crazy! I felt like I was swaying from side to side. You could spend hours here just admiring every little detail. It is absolutely AWESOME, and you should make it a point to stop by next year! They scared me throughout the maze, and that is saying a lot considering Universal Fright Nights doesn't.... I didn't have to wait 3 hours in line and the scare was hardcore....
