Never judge a book by its cover. Located in the heart of Valatie, Magdalena's doesn't look like much. There are just six tables but the star is the food. Everything is fresh and top quality. The prices are more than reasonable. This is a family run business - they care and it shows. Specifically, my wife had a large margarita and loved it. I had three shrimp tacos - the shrimp were outstanding and at $13 a real value. My wife had chicken enchiladas in a mole sauce - not too many places can do a perfect mole but they did. Finally I was able to wake up early enough to come and try Magdalena's Menu! I had chicken tamale and chicken burrito, they are pretty good! I was brave enough to try the hot sauce, and it was not as spicy as the one my bf had at home. Besides tamales and burritos, they also serve empanadas, nachos and chiles rellenos. Good news! If you can't wake up early for the Troy Farmers Market, I also found their website: http://www.magdalenasmenu.com. Magdalena's Menu not just a food stand anymore! The Night Hawk review inspired me to make a place that Magdalena's Menu could call home. Let me start off by saying I hail from a land that you can buy tamales in the Costco Parking lot, where breakfast burritos are just a drive thru away, Where you don't have to ask for things spicy and where conversations like "where do you want to go for dinner?" "I dunno, I'm pretty broke" "Okay, let's do Mexican" take place. It was quite the culture shock when I moved here. You CHARGE for chips and salsa? You want HOW much for a tamale? While this little stand at the farmers market doesn't fulfill all of my hopes and dreams it at least helps fill the void. It's cheap, hot and fast. Just how I like my women, I mean Mexican food. Great Vegetarian options like Potato and Cheese Empanadas and Black Bean tamales. I've heard the chicken is fantastic. Like I've said before, their prices went up but I'm crossing my fingers it's so they can open up their own place. A girl can dream. read more

Having only enjoyed Magdalena's at the Troy Farmer's Market, it was great to make it to their full service restaurant in Valatie. The menu at Magdalena's is comprised of standard Mexican fare, offering tacos, burritos, tostadas, empenadas, and flautas. However, if you're looking for something a little different, have a long look at their specials. During my most recent visit, I counted over 15 special dishes from gazpacho, to chile rellenos, and a roasted beet salad. And although it's assumed, you must order the chips, pico, and guac as a starter. The chips are homemade and beyond delicious, pairing wonderfully with the brightness of the pico. I would also recommend saving room at the end for churros, which completely blew me away. Although the churros alone are worth the drive, the friendly service and pleasant atmosphere make coming to Magdalena's a real treat. I would highly recommend stopping in if you're passing through the area. read more

Magdalena's Menu is also set up at the Troy Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings. The place offers a small selection of grocery items and cold drinks in the cooler and a full service Mexican restaurant inside the store including several tables with metal folding chairs for dining in and takeout is available. Some of the menu items offered include nachos, empanadas, tamales, enchiladas, burritos, tostadas, chimichangas, flautas, tacos, and tortas, plus desserts chimichangas (filled with cheesecake & banana) and churros (covered with cinnamon sugar, stuffed with apple). The prices for individual items $3.50-$8.00 plus tax and dinner plates (with rice & beans) $8.00-$10.00 plus tax. I stopped in here for takeout very recently. I ordered the Chimichangas with Grilled Chicken ($8.00 plus tax) served with rice and beans, lettuce & diced tomato garnish. They ran out of chicken with chipotle, my initial choice. The food was ready to go in under 10 minutes. The portion of food was just right and hot. The chimichanga was lightly fried in a thin soft tortilla wrap stuffed with tender marinated grilled chicken strips and topped with guacamole and sour cream drizzle. The Mexican rice had a firm texture and the refried beans were cooked firm & round and not mashed down. The food overall was fresh tasting with nice flavors and not too heavy, nor greasy. As far as the service, It was sparse. We waited an extended amount of time for the waitstaff to serve us and to refill our drinks. Not to mention the cobwebs on the decor. By far the best review I want to write. First let me say we used Magdalenas for our wedding reception. We ordered a taco bar and words can not describe how pleased we were, every guest raved about our food... every single one has contacted me after asking where the food is from. Even being about 40 minutes from my phone all of the food was hot and what should have been cold was. Every is homemade, don't expect any frozen boxed or pre made, generic food from this place down to condiments. We ordered for 100 people but even with people going for multiple servings we have left overs. (They most definitely will not go to waste) the staff that delivered were so friendly wished us a happy day and set everything up. The price was also a big plus! ***Very affordable**** if your looking for authentic, clean, Friendly that won't break the bank this is where you want to go. We have two friends that are now going to book for parties. They accommodated my every request. I couldn't be happier! Now to dine in experience. The restaurant is small and cozy, like stepping into your memas kitchen. It's clean and the wait staff always have smiles. The portions are large and the price is low. I highly recommend this place. After more than a dozen trips to Magdalena's I'm still as much in like as I was when I first walked in the door. They've moved beyond the folding chairs and half painted walls and now there's nice tables, pepto bismal colored paint on the walls and some pretty art work. The food is still great, the waiter is still adorable and now they're branching out into some pretty cool specials. My husband is addicted to the cheesecake chimichanga, while it's not authentic it's delicious. They only lose a star for no liquor license, because my husband would love to have a good beer with lunch. read more

I ordered the 3 tacos Texas-style w/pork, my boyfriend had the enchilada with rice, beans and veggies. We both split a chip platter with salsa, guac, etc. Everything was very good, the meat was authentic, well seasoned, NOT cooked off a Sysco truck. My meal was filling, though I was told the enchilada could have been just a tad bigger. The salsa was fresh! The interior was nice, tables have been upgraded since my last visit, pleasant open-concept atmosphere. We've lived in the area for almost 15 years and Magdalena's is by far superior to any Mexican restaurant in the area, including Chatham or Hudson. The prices are reasonable, the family who runs it is there every day and they go out of their way to try to accommodate special requests that vary from their menu. Not only is this the best Mexican food around, it's also the only reliable place to go for a quick lunch. Even though they make everything fresh to order, it's ready in no time. If you're looking for a trendy place to see and be seen, I'd go to Chatham or Hudson. I love the food at Magdalena's. The vegetarian burrito is excellent, filled with black beans, rice, and fresh vegetables in season. (Last night was mushrooms, summer squash, and zucchini.) The staff is also happy to make any substitutions you'd like. Lots of choices for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. They have also upgraded their seating to lovely wooden tables and chairs.
