After an awful experience in June 2014, I decided to call back in The Mod Cod, to give them another…read morechance, after they told me that they were gluten free (eventually) however never did I expect for a business owner to abuse me, behind my back. I spoken to them on the phone to ask about the chips being gluten free, she told me that she would check, after some time on "silent hold", I noticed that she had hung up on me, hence I rang back (no reply), a few minutes later I phoned back, she blamed the disconnection on a simple thing not of her fault, and she did eventually tell me they were gluten free, and they was no chance of cross-contamination. I was delighted to see a chippy do this, she claimed they had a separate fryer and they were gluten free, however as soon as I arrived their and my friend ran in, they were saying things about me " That call burnt my head out, and I don't know what I'm doing now" was one of her quotations. I felt really upset to hear about this, especially considering they had a large sign up, mentioning to ask about allergy information, considering what happened with her reaction to the phone call, hanging up on me on one occasion and also ignoring my call, straight away, I feel they don't have a clue about allergies, and would rather risk making customers very unwell and call them names behind their back, rather than tell them a truth, this could loose business but it would avoid customers becoming very angry and/or ill. I really do regret giving The Mod Cod a second chance, and I am quite upset for them to talk me about that, especially considering since December 2014 it has been EU law for places to provide allergen information, and although they did, I highly doubt what they told me was true, but to get me off the phone quickly. I also feel not only is it disgraceful to insult customers behind their back, but to other customers too.

As well as serving traditional fish and chips, they have extended their menu further for an even greater selection, including greek gyros and ice cream. The staff seemed friendly/polite, although they were quite busy, I was served rather quickly, they had a staff member taking fish orders, while you wait in a queue to pay, I liked this approach as it meant not only was the fish cooked fresh to order, but they were keeping the queue moving quickly without delay. They do have gluten-free fish here, and they use a separate fryer too which is great, they do have limited other options, I would have liked them to manage a gluten-free curry sauce/gravy to go with the food, or a gluten-free sausage, hopefully, they'll consider that in the future. I was impressed with the quality of the fish, the batter was also crispy and a good portion size too, the chips were fresh, seasoned well and cooked well, I enjoyed my meal, it was quite reasonably priced at just under £8 too. I had to settle for some mushy peas for the side, I didn't enjoy them at all, I found the peas to be hard and almost inedible. It is cash only I'm afraid - this is one of the biggest negatives for me, I also do find the packaging to be a little flimsy and cheap, compared to the box which most other chippies are using now, so there are areas for improvement but otherwise The Bridge is a great local chippy with a greek twist and a very good gluten-free fish. Sunday openings (rare in a chippy) are also a huge plus. I would return. 4*

Thankfully it's in the village I'm originally from, but only started trading a few years ago. As well as being a traditional English chippy, they have restaurant space upstairs for you to dine in and enjoy your meal as well. I held a recent birthday get together here with my home mates (its proximity to a couple of pubs made it the ideal choice and it worked out brilliantly). Anyway, the fish they order in daily is delivered fresh and on ice, once battered in the crispy goodness it's delicious and I always order it (£3.30 for cod or £3.40 for haddock). The chips aren't too greasy and you receive a hearty portion. As well as Holland's Pies, which they warm up in the oven, they also make their own in-house (steak & ale, cheese & onion, beef & onion or rag pudding). Pretty much all the extra typical bits and bobs you can order are available (mushy peas, gravy, curry sauce, scampi, sausages, onion rings, chicken nuggets, spam fritters and canned drinks). If you're a philistine and don't want a chippy tea, they also offer a range of filled jacket potatoes. They even sell ice cream - no wonder this place is busy, it's a gastronomic wonderland.

From the moment I stepped foot into the shop, I was greeted with warm smiles and a delightful aroma of freshly fried fish and chips. The menu at Tib Street Chippy offered a wide variety of options, catering to both traditional and modern tastes. I opted for their classic fish and chips, and I was blown away by the quality and flavour. The fish was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The chips were golden and had that ideal combination of fluffy interior and crispy exterior. It was truly a match made in culinary heaven. What impressed me the most, however, was the promptness of the service. Despite the busy evening rush, the staff at Tib Street Chippy managed to deliver my order in record time. They were efficient, ensuring that every customer received their food with minimal wait. The attention to detail and dedication to providing excellent service was evident in every interaction I had with the staff. Not only was the food exceptional and the service prompt, but the atmosphere at Tib Street Chippy was also inviting. The cozy seating area and charming decor added to the overall experience. It was clear that the owners and staff took great pride in creating a welcoming environment for their customers. In conclusion, I highly recommend Tib Street Chippy to anyone craving delicious fish and chips. The exceptional quality of the food, combined with the prompt and attentive service, make it a standout eatery. I can't wait to visit again and indulge in their mouthwatering offerings. Next time I'll try the sausage.
