6 out of five starts! As other reviewers have written, Melissa and her bee-themed beauty studio Maebee's are TOP NOTCH, a true gem. I have been going to see Melissa for bikini and brow waxing for about two years. I first decided to make an appointment because of the stellar reviews and because her previous Kensington location was walking distance from my house. Although she has since moved, I would not think of going anywhere else at this point because Melissa really is the "bee's knees" (sorry, I had to). Melissa is professional, personable and fun to talk to, which makes the experience of someone peering up your downside far less awkward. She is also just very good at waxing: very little pain/redness and absolutely smooth. She checks in during the entire process to make sure that you are comfortable. I am not over-selling when I tell you that she has consistently given me the best waxes I have ever had. She will also make sure that the wax is aesthetically perfect: even on both sides, every stray hair gone and every rogue one put back in its place. She is meticulously clean and careful, which I appreciate immeasurably during COVID times. The prices are lower than or comparable to other Philly beauty studios that I've frequented. I should mention that I also always request "a la carte" additions to my waxes, so that they are somewhere in-between bikini/full Brazilians. In the spirit of avoiding the exhaustive pricing list many other salons utilize, Melissa has never once up-charged me for my hybrid bush-- and she definitely could. I don't often write reviews but Melissa really is an all-star who cares so much about her clients. I happened to be the only scheduled appointment today and Melissa opened up the studio and came in anyway. That is dedication! The past ten months have been particularly hard on small businesses, and I am very glad that Maebee's has persevered. I have been going to Maebee's for a few years, mostly for Brazilian waxes. Her pricing is excellent and her work is careful, gentle (as much as one can be with waxing), and meticulous. Given the part I get waxed, one can imagine I am scrupulous as to to whom I will go and Melissa is only one of two beauticians I trust in the city. The other is more expensive and farther from home. Last year I got married and Melissa did my makeup. A little gem off the beaten path! Maebee's has no store front, it looks more like someone's house but inside you will find a very welcoming atmosphere. There is plenty of parking and it's free no meters. Maebee's is by appointment only which is great. Appointments can be made online or by phone. Credit cards are accepted and tip can be added. I have visited twice and never had to wait. I went in for an eyebrow wax after letting my brows grow in for months. I wanted a fresh start. I explained to Melissa how I wanted my shape and she delivered! Melissa takes her time and is very precise and also very sweet! Other Yelpers have raved how great the Brazilian waxes turn out. Since it was my first time at this location, I didn't know what to expect. The exterior was a bit surprising, it looks like a home (less like a business) from the outside, and except for a small sign on the door, I wouldn't have known it's a salon. I wish I could give more than 5 stars! So if you follow my reviews you remember when I said I lost Melissa after she left MOKO. Welllllllll I found her!!!! How you may ask???? I was stalking YELP and any other social media platform you can think of and I ran across Maebee's website. I was skeptical because in the process of us losing touch she had married so her last name changed so the Melissa mentioned on the website with no picture (eye-roll) I couldn't be too sure about. So what would any logical person do???? I sent an email through the "contact us" link. I said if she responds then I know I have the right person! Sure enough, DING DING DING it was her :) I felt like I had won the powerball! I don't think I ever searched for something so hard in my life. I scheduled my appointment and when I walked in not only was Melissa there of course but the young lady Samantha that did my wax at MOKO when they said Melissa was out for an "emergency" was also there working! We all just laughed in unison. It felt good to find Melissa and see that she was truly happy perfecting her craft :) I always have positive things to say about Maebee's. The environment is warm and friendly and the prices are realistic. You always get your monies worth and more! After receiving a less than average wax job at another establishment, I decided to search high and low for another place to go. My super sleuthing google-fu led me to Melissa. Melissa? Dude. What can I say that hasn't already been said? She's a pro through and through. Not sure if it was my relaxed attitude about the whole process or she is just really damn good at what she does... I would like to think it was a little of both. I was a first time client and not once was there any weird or awkwardness. Her manner and demeanor is perfect for her line of work. She is super thorough. Unlike the last place I hit up that left me all patchy, sticky and severely irritated, she spent a good hour on my two services... And well executed no less. No quickie, drive by here. She always made sure I was comfortable, hydrated, entertained and distracted. Distraction is key here... when someone is pulling hair out of your pubic area, trust me, you want your mind elsewhere. Conversational humor always goes a long way with me, especially when someone can handle my candidness. The only bummer is I can't see her anymore since I moved away but no one has cleaned the plate as well as she did. Melissa is a dream! She did my bridal makeup (and makeup for one of my bridesmaids) for my wedding on 9/22 and she made me look like a freaking princess. She's friendly as hell, excellent at communicating even when I made a million last minute changes and requests, and my eyebrows have never in my whole life looked so good. As a woman of color I'm always nervous to have people do my make-up because in my experience they don't have the proper shades of foundation etc. for my skin tone, but Melissa knows what she's about. There's not many people you can say are the best on earth, my personal opinion is that Melissa IS. I had a wretched experience with my first Brazilian wax at a "spa" that left me crying and in pain, needless to say I had no desire to do it again. Knowing my experience, Melissa brought me into a serene atmosphere where I was not worried about anything, which is a huge factor. I'm a very conservative person so the idea of anyone seeing my lady parts is embarrassing. Luckily I didn't feel that with Melissa.
