Definitely my favorite square in all of Savannah - the scene is just perfect, and the surrounding buildings are picturesque on all 4 sides of the square. This area has everything - multiple monuments, cannons, history signs to read, shade, plenty of seating, and a great variety of architecture around it to cap it all off.
This square is surrounded by the Sorrel-Weed House, St. Johns Episcopal Church, the Green-Meldrim House, and the Scottish Rite temple - all of which have their own style to them, and add to the setting of Madison Square. There is also the giant statue of William Jasper, who recovered the South Carolina flag from a battle as his last act before he died. In addition to the history and the architecture, there is tons of vegetation and green-space here - which provides lots of shade over the benches, sidewalks, and grass spaces. All in all, this is a must-visit square when in Savannah, if you don't think you can visit them all. While it is probably too busy to venture to for a picnic, it's a great example of what Savannah is about and has just the right mix of the hustle & bustle going on around you. read more
