Out of all the shops I visited, Back Country Jewelery Rock & Mineral was by far the busiest! I can see why, although it is a tight squeeze between people going into and out of the shop, there were some beautiful stones, rocks, and jewelery to look at! They were very organized and had a big selection of special stones... I found a beautiful small Dalmation Jasper for my daughter. It's one of her favorites! It was a tiny piece for only $2! I found a small box of tumbled rocks, some shaped like hearts... like the one I always wear. I picked up an obsidian heart for my daughter bc she likes mine so much. I loved that it was made into a necklace and had the piece on it. All I need to do is get a chain for it. I also like the black hematite rings, and I found them there. There smething about how dark and plain the band is draws me towards it. I have many of them, but none of them are like the other... and somehow, I see them all differently... and although they look alike, I remember where I got each one.. The man working at the counter was so nice. His name is David. Apparently, there was a gothic event at the fair grounds and he asked me if I had attended... I can see why he would ask me that, lol. When he added up my items, he used a calculator to l to get my total. Then, he gently wrapped each item that I was buying and put it in the bag. I like that BCJRM takes mobile payments. It makes checking out bvery convenient and fast. The whole check out service was on the slower side, but I also enjoyed talking to David. It's nice to not be in a rush while you are enjoying your day. Whether you are window shopping or coming in for something specific, this store is a true gem... full of 1000's of actual gems, stones & rocks! What you call them is honestly in the eye of the beholder...

The owner was friendly and tried to help me find some amber. I didn't find what I was looking for, but I was glad to get a few new items to add to my collection. Parking is scarce as the area is very packed with smaller stores.

Sad news indeed, but thee are the times we live in. Press a buzzer and you will be ushered into not a speakeasy but a very special store that feels more like an art exhibit and stage set that ushers you into another world. All your senses are engaged, from the tinkling of wind chimes, to a tapestry of textures and colors found in beautiful objects of art. The store offers miniature treasures to exquisite full scale sculptures and everything in between. I had read about this import store and followed them online, but nothing can capture the essence of this marvelous retail store unless you enter the space. I came here seeking purple themed treasures for my sibkid's 21st birthday. The owner and a staff member went above and beyond to help me in my quest, and I definitely was inspired at the incredible selection and artistic displays. It was also educational shopping here as I read about the various history and meaning of the objects with informative signage. Your budget can be a few dollars or into the thousands, there is a big range of price points here. High value items are understandably behind glass cases. The displays were breathtaking and were thematically arranged by geographical region/country; Asia, Africa, Mexico/Central and South America, etc. I have not enjoyed a shopping experience this much in years! It reminded me of the locally owned stores I shopped at when I was a kid growing up in a small college town that had tons of independent shops, and how much fun it was. It made me realize how much we have been sold a bill of goods with the chain and big box stores taking over our society. We've been robbed of community, connection, art, and supporting our local economy all for a soulless exchange of "convenience" and "lower prices." Having completed my mission, I was awed when the owner proceeded to carefully and artistically wrap each item and then use custom gift paper (purple, of course!) and ribbon to create the perfect gift box for my sibkid. He included informative write ups of the objects when applicable and told me some additional wonderful stories about the provenance and sourcing of several items. I even got a great local restaurant recommendation! Pleasant shopping experience, great value, and absolute win with my sibkid, who delightedly opened each treasure that evening. I was definitely "winning" as an Auntie thanks to Zanzibar Trading. If you can't make it in person, they have a Facebook live auction every Saturday. But definitely try to go in person. It's a unique, one of a kind store that is a transformative retail experience and provides the perfect place for gift shopping for a loved one or yourself. Go.You deserve it! Free parking in their adjacent lot. Across from the Broadway Target and Golden One credit union.

My friend and I were there for a few hours, and we were enjoying ourselves until we went to the last vendor. The owners had a tray of moldavites sitting out on a tray, and they were rather large pieces. I was very surprised by this because these rocks can be very pricey and had been left out at the edge of the table. I love moldavite, and I picked up a couple of pieces to inspect them and even asked the owners their weight and price. I also asked them to weigh a few pieces I bought earlier that day from another vendor. Since the pieces on the tray were large, they were pricy, and I put them back. A few minutes later, I walked away but returned as my friend was still hanging out at the same booth. The owner walked up to me and asked, "Did you pocket that piece?". I was so taken aback, but immediately told him no. I even asked him if he would like to search my purse multiple times, but he refused. He then proceeded to check under the table. Again, I asked if he wanted to check my purse too, and he again said no. I even told him I was surprised that those pieces had been left out. He said that he trusted people... clearly not. After we walked away, my friend told me he asked her if I had stolen the piece when I left the booth initially. He didn't ask her if she had pocketed it herself even though she was standing right next to me with access to the same tray. I can't help but wonder if there was a bit of racism involved there, too, since I'm not white and my friend is. Additionally, they had signs everywhere on their booth saying patrons were being recorded... so why he didn't check his cameras before or after accusing me I can't say. The experience was extremely humiliating. We left the venue right after because our mood soured. I will not be going back.

(I guess Saturdays and Sundays are busier, so they try to get people to come on Friday). I remembered that in the past, I had attended another gem faire, the San Mateo's International Gem and Jewelry Show, and loved it. This one was different. I wasn't sure if they charged for parking and my email to the site didn't receive a response. So I decided to just check it out today. Parking was plentiful but they charged $5 to park. :( At least I saved on the $7 admission, right? It was a fun expo but definitely NOTHING compared to the International Gem and Jewelry Show in San Mateo. That one is worth going to. This one seemed....okay. It seemed like most of the beads were from China (as evidenced by the majority of the vendors being Chinese). But I know there is quite a difference between beads made in China versus Czech ones or Swarovski crystals. I did end up getting some Swarovski beads that weren't cheap, but the colors were lovely. While it was fun to visit today, I don't think I'd go back to this gem faire. Maybe if parking were free and with free admission, I'd go. But paying $12 (admission and parking) wouldn't be worth it, IMO. It just wasn't that big of a faire to warrant that admission fee.
