The Madeira Star Café and Restaurant is a stand-out in my long list of cafes. It's a shame we only visited this one in the morning, so I can't really comment on the food on the whole. However I did sample their fish and prawn cakes, which are well worth a visit. The fish cakes are pasty shaped, with a lovely mixture of melting potato and texture from the fish, and well seasoned. The prawn cakes are little folds of batter/pastry enclosing slight gooeyness and juicy, tasty prawns. A lovely tasty breakfast! They are displayed in a counter along with some very tempting home-made cakes and pastries
Though the outside is distinctly uninspiring, once inside the atmosphere is relaxed. They have a bar which gives it a bit more upmarket feel. The menu also extends beyond the normal café food. Nice loos, and very conveniently situated across the road from Finsbury Park rail/tube/bus station (the side with the Arsenal World shop Finsbury Station gets a little complicated). Well worth a visit, if only for a fish cake or other snack. I have a feeling it might have earned five stars if I'd had the chance to sample more of the menu. read more
