Not bad but not wonderful. I'd probably rate it a 3.5. If we were in Arizona I'd only give it a 2 or 2.5 but I'm still testing he Mexican waters in NZ. The biggest let down was the tortilla. The burrito otherwise was pretty good. read more

As an American, I find myself craving decent Mexican food quite a lot and MadMex is my medicine! The nachos are great, and come with some actually pretty good queso. The Tacos aren't too bad either, and you can order them in singles too (though you won't get a stamp on your loyalty card). Pro Tip: They have cilantro (coriander) hidden away if you want some on a taco, burrito, etc, just ask for it.

Mad Mex comes through with delicious, fresh Mexican food made from top-quality ingredients. It's a small chain based in Australia, and now is appearing in New Zealand. For those of you familiar with Chipolte Grill from America, you will get the basic idea of the restaurant's format and menus. Once you order at the counter, your food is prepared in front of you, similar to how a Subway sandwich is created assembly-line style. There are a great number of selections you can make, from burritos to tacos, with chicken, pork, steak and other options. The sauces are flavorful, and can get very spicy!

For that price I expect delicious and I normally love Mexican food. The only thing that was fresh was the lettuce, which made up half of the dish. The guacamole and pico de gallo were out of a jar. I won't be going back there.

The place features very typical images on the walls. Having traveled and stayed in Mexico for 5 months, I was brought right there Music is really nice Lots of seats Very friendly and efficient staff And food is a fusion, bringing the best of both worlds They have different types of snacks & sides, tacos, quesadillas, and even desserts, and plenty of drinks to choose from, tequilas, magraritas, mezcal, liquors... I personally went for a "fried jackfruit con cola" taco, a "slow braised ancho & agave lamb shoulder" quesadilla, and a "pan fried broccoli florets" side (my favorite) As a drink, as I don't drink alcohol, I went for pineapple + strawberry soda And "cinnamon spiced churros" as a dessert I really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, the staff, and the location Oh, and they also have margarita workshops for groups of people who want to learn how to make them Highly recommended, "me encantó"!

What was once a place known for fish tacos is now more of a tribute to American Diner foods like hamburgers, fries, shakes, chicken and waffles. Overall, I really like this place. It's a great hangout spot for groups to bond over nice smashburgers, fries, waffles and fried chicken. Pros: great selection of burgers, fried chicken and a variety of waffles both savory and sweet in options. Con: if I had anything to complain about, it would be the odd liquid nature of the shakes. As an American, I'm used to shakes that are served thick enough at least initially to be eaten with a spoon. With shakes like Snickers bars mixed in, you expect a thicker more frozen shake to evenly disperse the candy bits. The shakes here are more molten ice cream milk in viscosity which is problematic causing the candy bits to all congregate at the bottom. I'm still giving this a 4 out of 5 because I do recommend this place. If they ever redo the shakes to be thicker and more frozen in nature, it would elevate the Americana experience in Wellington even moreso.

If you have issues with slow or rude service, speak up! I hate it when people gripe about something, but then don't say anything to resolve the issue. Restaurants and cafes need to hear feedback, and a review site is one place you can let your violent and passionate hate flow. However, another route you can take is to let your server or waitstaff know! They're in the service industry and should be catering to please you. Passive-aggressive behavior only comes back to haunt and not help you, dear diner. That said, cafe workers should realize that there's a certain expectation of niceties when working in the SERVICE and HOSPITALITY industry. A smile goes a long way, and sometimes, an apology with an "I'll get right on it" will work wonders. I like this place because it's no-nonsense. It's run almost similar to a fast-food establishment, but with a lot better food. Their vegetarian burger is the best in Wellington. Hands down. They've got tasty curly fries, too. I'm a devoted carnivore, but I end up ordering the veggie burger every single time because I know it'll be delicious. They should definitely think about entering it into the Burger Wellington competition. Evenings are much more delightful without the lunch time crowd rushing to get their meals in under an hour.
