I don't know what it is about New Zealand, but they really know how to do good Mexican. I had thought that nothing could top Sombreros in Queenstown, but I was blown away by the Flying Burrito Brothers in Wellington. The staff were incredibly friendly from the outset, incredibly helpful and attentive at all times. I started with a very simple entree of guacamole and corn chips, and could not fault the guacamole whatsoever. My mains of chimichanga mexicana pollo was perfectly cooked, and absolutely exquisite. The blend of onion, chicken, cheese and capsicum wrapped in a tortilla and perfectly baked was perfectly complimented by sour cream, more of that amazing guacamole and a salsa. Accompanied by a beautifully sweet, but not too sweet red sangria, this was the perfect meal. read more

VERY small serving size for quite a bit of money. I got the porch enchiladas for around $20. The enchiladas were the size of two taquitos and the only addition was a small side of Mexican rice and some sour cream. The meal didn't taste bad at all, it was actually pretty good, but this is one of those places you don't come back to unless you find something you REALLY like. read more

What a great place for classic Mexican in the capital. I had started with the black bean salsa, a perfect started with lots of cumin and lime flavours. The chips were crispy and not saturated in oil. For my main I had the spicy beef burrito; a flavoursome choice. Although not very spicy there were four different hot sauces available on the table. Lots of guac, sour cream and home made salsa to accent the burrito. All in all a great meal. The staff were quick and attentive, making my experience one that I look forward to again read more

We really wanted to like FBB much more than we did. Last time we visited Wellington, we tried so many times to visit, but our timing sucked every time. This time, we were on a mission to go, and we did. The restaurant looked great, I just felt the flavour lacked in preference of too much chilli. We kicked off by sharing the nachos, meat and vegetarian alike and both went down well enough. Mains - we tucked into the FBB burrito, soft shelled taco with chicken and vegetarian fajitas. Presentation wise, all looked promising, and there were some jealous glances across the table when the fajitas arrived, sizzling away. Unfortunately, they were underseasoned, and the only flavour that came across was chilli heat, nothing else. I was disappointed by that. The chicken tacos on the otherhand were over salted. The burritos, while they looked good, again were nothing special. Overall, despite looking forward to FBB, we all felt a little disappointed by what we ate, although it wasn't terrible by a long shot. It was just... average. read more

My family and I came here because everyone said this was a must go-to place...NOT. The meal started off fine with light conversations and really good drinks, but that was the end of the niceness. My sister ordered one of their chimichangas and asked for no rice, when it was brought out there was rice. This would not have been a big deal except for the fact that when the manager finally got around to us, she said that the food was prepackaged and that there would be no way for them to remake it. (I cannot make this up.) Appalled, we told we just wanted the dessert menus and to order dessert, since everyone else was already halfway through their meals. The menu came quickly enough but we had to wait several minutes before we were even able to flag down our server. When we did, she didn't take our orders right away, but choose to ignore us and clean to plates away. Normally I wouldn't have minded but my sister wanted something to eat and the food took long enough, we just wanted her to get out order in. She finally took our order and we proceeded to sit there for at least 30 minutes. During this time, we noticed that our server had messed up two other tables' orders. In general, what should have only been an hour dinner, turned into twice that with headaches about communicating with our server and dealing with an unsympathetic manager. My mother was keen to point out that what if my sister had a rice allergy and had ordered it specifically so she wouldn't have a reaction (she doesn't by the way). The food was not awful but the service really turned this into an almost miserable experience. read more

We were craving Mexican food after being in New Zealand for a week and this place was close to our Airbnb. My boyfriend and I shared the queso and both ordered margaritas and carne asada tacos. The margaritas and queso were delicious! The tacos were good too, according to my boyfriend. Unfortunately for me, the tacos were too spicy and I had a hard time eating mine. I had a serious taco craving, and Flying Burrito Brothers hit the spot. I only came in for a quick meal, but can confirm the fish tacos, guacamole and nachos are ace. My mate had a strawberry margarita and promptly turned giggly, so assuming that's a positive sign. Staff were attentive and sharp, which as handy. The restaurant is set over two levels - street level and basement level and the decor is like a little piece of Mexico in the heart of Cuban Street in Wellington. If you're sitting on the bottom level and plan to drink yourself into a stupor, make sure you have someone to carry you up the stairs - it was challenging enough sober. This was my first proper meal in Wellington after arriving and getting settled in. A friend of mine back in Oz had told me about it and I was keen to check it out. After wandering around Cuba street I stumbled onto Flying Burrito Brothers (FBB). Even though there are technically two floors, the place IS tiny. If there are more than two of you, book ahead! Especially for a Saturday night. As there was only one of me I was in luck and got a seat at the plank by the window. I was jammed by a wall on one side and some other dinners on the right. I would suggest that they might like to think about installing some hooks or something that patrons can use to hang yo their coats or bags as I had to put mine on the floor. I wasn't too keen on having everyone look at me eating my food while they decided if they were coming in or not. My server was Javiera and she was very attentive. Not LNG after sitting down she came over with the menus for food and drinks and took the time to explain it to me. I was hungry but not starving. I wanted to try the signature dish but didn't want to burst at the seams from food overload. aviera steered me towards the Poquito de Todo (a little of everything) plate and it was just what I wanted. The drink for the meal was the special of the day, mango and feijoa margarita. Not bad. Once I had finished my meal it was time to pay. Because the same person who organises table eating is the cashier, the was a pretty long wait to pay and leave. And the walkway to get out of the restaurant is also the one people take to get into it... It was hard to get anywhere. If they can improve those small details (cashier, etc) it would be great! I'll be coming back for sure, but I think next time I'll try to book ahead. read more

I always like coming here. The ambience is great and the Margaritas are awesome. The service is really friendly and relaxed too, which helps support the ambience. The food is good without being exceptional. I will be back many more times I am sure. read more

I actually happen to think that this is one of my favourite restaurants that I have been to. The atmosphere is so nice and calm and the waiters are so nice. The food I have had from there was wonderful and you get a lot for the price you pay. It is in such a good area as well, very convenient to get to, if you just want to get some nice Mexican food. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone who loves Mexican. read more

This is probably the best go at a legit burrito I came across during my time in Australia/New Zealand. While bland (as per Kiwi/Aussie/British standards), adding a little habañero hot sauce to the dish made it taste much closer to home. Of course, at this point I had been 5 months removed from what I would consider real Mexican food, but in either case it was pretty dang tasty. My buddy who joined me for my NZ adventures said it wasn't as good as home (California, that is-where he had come from only a few days before), but that's to be expected. The simple fact of the matter is, for 2 little islands in the middle of the Pacific, this place had a pretty darn good burrito...and it was close enough to authentic for me. I wish I could've picked it up, instead of having to get my fork on. Regardless: flavour and fun...not quite California style, but best in the area. read more

To be honest I have not once had a good experience at tFBB. The first time I ate there I was violently I'll. The second time our orders were badly misunderstood and we didn't get what we ordered. The third time the restaraunt was full, which I'm sure I shouldn't complain about but this place is cramped and I mean CRAMPED. Now if your wondering now why I came back each time after a bad experience its because while the service isn't great and I may have got sick off the food once the food really is the most authentic Mexican style food you can get in wellington and the experience is a must have for any Wellingtonian (just to be able to say you've been there). I suggest you try it once at least, the food really is quite nice and the service is tolerable after a few drinks haha. So just make sure to check into one of Cuba's many bars and pubs before your visit to the flying burrito brothers. read more

This was the worst restaurant we have dined at in Wellington. The food was Ok, your typical Tex Mex food. Kinda reminded me of the old Chi Chi's or Don Pablo. The service was absolutely horrible, slow and not attentive, the worst we have had in our two months in New Zealand. Part of it was perhaps the waitress's understanding or lack of understanding of English. We arrived at 7:10 pm. The waitress asked us if we wanted to hear the specials, we said yes and she walked away. Our order was taken around 7:30 pm. The appetizer showed up, no guacamole...she did not understand us. Our entree showed up 30 minutes later, carne asada. We ordered fajitas. Not sure how you get carne asada out of fajitas. How were the fajitas when they arrived? Ok...kinda greasy and salty. The young lady that brought the dish and corrected dish from the kitchen was apologetic and checked back with us. The hostess at least said she was sorry. Won't be back here and don't recommend. read more
