This was a miss stop for lunch. Was looking forward to a good meal and had a stomach ache instead. We chose the Esquites, Portobello Mushroom Quesadilla; and Beef Carnitas Soft shell Taco. First it took almost 20 min for the waitress to come over. However; food came out relatively fast. Esquites was probably the most palatable part of the meal. The mushroom quesadilla was horrible. Basically two tortillas with a slice of mushroom and mint?? Horrible horrible ... no taste at all. All I did taste was mint!! Gross. The beef taco was so chewy with pieces of fat and some meat attached... not good at all! Had to put a ton of house made salsa on top to make the food ok to eat. I'm glad we didn't order and waste our money on anything else. We live in San Diego California and this is a FAR CRY from Mexican food! The best thing about this place was the decor. Sorry but this place is a flop. It might have that hip atmosphere your looking for but if you want a good meal; don't think you'll find it here. read more

Stumbled upon Mexico after reading all of the great Yelp reviews and they certainly did not disappoint. Immediately welcomed upon walking in by an enthusiastic young women who directed us to one of the back tables. The vibe/ambience is hipsterish and artsy. Wall were decorated with an interesting array of Mexican mural. Though it was not too loud on our visit, the combination of concrete floors and tiled walls results in a louder atmosphere. As others have described, the offerings at Mexico are tapas style Mexican dishes and somewhat pricey (though I have come to accept this in New Zealand). Tacos ($7.00), Quesdaillas ($15.00-$16.00), Salads ($12.00), various specialty dishes ($15.00 - $16.00). They also serve sangria ($7.00 - $12.00), Tequila, Margaritas, and several Mexican beers ($8.00 - $9.00). We ultimately settled on the the salsa rojo ($8.00) for an appetizer which is served with house made yellow corn chips. Salsa was delicious, and definitely recommended for an appetizer. Mexico offers several quesadillas - we ultimately settled on the coffee agave lamb quesadilla ($16.00). The quesadilla is stuffed with zucchini, pumpkin, oregano, garlic chips and sliced into eight pieces. It was served with a side of salsa. I would definitely recommend this quesadilla for anyone who likes lamb, it was delicious, and the eight pieces make it easy to share. We also ordered the Plancha BBQ apple mole chicken ($18.00) as recommended by our server. This free range chicken was large, and absolutely delicious. We were glad to have stumbled upon Mexico during our short stay in Wellington, and only wish we had a similar restaurant in Florida. Service was excellent and food was great. Having not had time to eat all day, I was looking for a place which food I would be sure to enjoy I searched online for such place located downtown, found this Mexican restaurant, and immediately decided to travel to it Good move! The place features very typical images on the walls. Having traveled and stayed in Mexico for 5 months, I was brought right there Music is really nice Lots of seats Very friendly and efficient staff And food is a fusion, bringing the best of both worlds They have different types of snacks & sides, tacos, quesadillas, and even desserts, and plenty of drinks to choose from, tequilas, magraritas, mezcal, liquors... I personally went for a "fried jackfruit con cola" taco, a "slow braised ancho & agave lamb shoulder" quesadilla, and a "pan fried broccoli florets" side (my favorite) As a drink, as I don't drink alcohol, I went for pineapple + strawberry soda And "cinnamon spiced churros" as a dessert I really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, the staff, and the location Oh, and they also have margarita workshops for groups of people who want to learn how to make them Highly recommended, "me encantó"! read more

I loved the atmosphere. Kind of dark and cozy. Most definitely more of a tapas bar with a Mexican theme than an authentic Mexican food restaurant. Nice cocktail menu and large tequila selection. I tried the cauliflower and a guava/mint margarita. I was happy with both. And the service was great. Definitely worth a stop while in Wellington! read more

Ok so New Zealand has some amazing food. I don't think I've had Mexican food this good. (I've not been to actual Mexico though). We walked past off the street decided to give the place a go. Hands down then best Mexican food I have had outside of America (well ok, I haven't been to Mexico itself, and pretty sure Mexico will outdo America too, but hey, this is my review ok?) and the first time i have seen soft shell tacos outside of that country too. I will note this review is a tale of two stories, as some of the food is outstanding, and this review driven by that, but there were a number of dishes that were just, 'meh'. All of the food we had was tapas style, and I can't remember if any of the 'standard' dishes that you normally find in Mexican restaurants was available. The absolute top end was the blackened fish taco - it covered all of the flavours - sweet, sour, salty, crunchy, soft. It was just over, far too soon. The fried chicken had a similar reaction from the SR. Low points - polenta chips were under seasoned and lacked flavour; the zucchini taco sounded better on paper than it did to eat, although I did enjoy the kale. Carnitas was another disappointment. Decor and ambience were great though we went at a quiet time and not sure what it would be like at peak. Overall Mexico was a funny one - we debated whether to return at the end of our holiday, but in the end, decided against it - we enjoyed our meal too much to be disappointed by having a lesser secondary meal, given the number of blander dishes we had, but when it does something well, Mexico did it WELL. read more

We were underwhelmed by Meh-xico. As another reviewer mentions, the restaurant offers a limited, yet relatively expensive, tapas-style menu. Examples of the over-priced selections: $6 for a smallish dish of chips and salsa, $7 for a single taco, $12 for a weak margarita. The tastiest item that we had was a black bean and mushroom quesadilla, which I would highly recommend if the cost were lower than the $16 Meh-xico charged. Stopped in for lunch with my sister - super friendly & attentive staff, and great artwork and ambiance, and fantastic food. The menu was a bit expensive, especially considering some of the portions were small, but that's more or less par for the course in New Zealand and the lunch special was a great deal, so not a direct hit. My sister got the three-cheese quesadilla and I got the lunch special, which included fried chicken, guacamole, a steak taco I don't see on the online menu, and a lemonade. The quesadilla was thin and delicious, with a fantastic dipping sauce. The lemonade was delicious and clumpy with fresh lemon, and the fried chicken was great no matter what we dipped it in (we experimented with the sauces it came with, the quesadilla sauce, and the guac). The guac was very fresh, although disappointingly came with only three chips to carry the load. The taco was fantastic - I believe there was pineapple on it as well, and it was super flavourful and made me want to try the rest of their taco offerings. read more

The food is great, and heaps of delicious and different options. We went for a soft shell taco each which were easily the highlight. The guacamole was excellent- the warm corn chips were a great touch. The chicken quesadilla was a little bland But the patatas bravas more than made up for that - so flavoursome! The service was great, there was a reasonable wait for a table but they were fast getting us seated considering the number of people eating. The jugs of traditional margaritas were fantastic. Being preggo wasn't able to partake in any of the delicious sounding margaritas or sangrias they offer here. Was pleasantly surprised with the chicken quesadilla. It's a good portion for dinner or to share as a snack with a friend. The tacos are a bit pricy at $7 for just one so that can add up if your hungry. They also offer aguas Fresca which I found was a nice touch. It's as close to Mexican as you can get in NZ. The atmosphere is a bit loud so it has more of a loungy feel to it. Also there is lots of Mexican memorabilia on the walls throughout and gives a theme like feeling. By this point in my trip was tired of the typical steak and seafood type restaurants so this hit the spot. read more

Really didn't like this place. It was almost empty and yet the service was so slow we almost let. The food was also very subpar. Got this mushroom/spinach quesadilla that had redic hot whole leaf spinach that was slimed and slid out of the quesadilla and burned my face. Drinks were also mediocre considering it's a Mexican place they should be acing those margs. read more

This hip and relaxed spot reminds me of the feel of The Mission district in San Fransisco. The staff was friendly and cool. We had the cricket flour tortilla chips with sweet potato and beetroot dip which really nice and different and three types of soft taco which were all delicious. We had a fun evening with friends. The atmosphere is bubbly and the food full of flavour. The menu is not extensive when it comes to Mexican classics but what appears is lovely. Is it authentic? Well that could be debated on a couple of dishes - but whatever way you go everything tasted fantastic. All my years of travel and living in Mexico and Central America the food would stack up. Loved the spicy jalapeño peppers stuffed with shrimp and chorizo with a lovely slaw to cut the heat. The chicken tacos were nice but I really wanted a good hit of mole which wasn't really there.
