First time at this location in Minneapolis/Richfield. Grew up going to the one in St Paul as a kid. It was literally a hidden gem back then! Counter style and find your own table with a few outside tables. I only knew of the halibut previously but now they offer other types of fish and even shrimp. They were always known for their incredible fried Halibut so I stuck with the fried and true and wasn't disappointed! The portion size has shrunk tremendously and it's a little pricey for the small piece of fish you get but it's worth trying at least once in your life! Get the homemade tartar sauce and fries!! Decided to try out Mac's after driving past them a few days ago. Went around 2:30pm on a Friday and it was pretty quiet. Only one table of folks eating inside. They have a parking lot, which is convenient so you don't have to worry about street parking. We ordered shrimp and chips, which were quite tasty. The fries are cut fresh and fried to order. They had a light seasoning but weren't too salty. We also tried out the cod and halibut. Both tasted fresh and were fried beautifully. The chicken strips were okay. I probably wouldn't order those again. But I enjoyed their seafood! They have a range of sauces to choose from (get the key like jalapeño sauce) and all baskets come with coleslaw. This is a little hole in the wall restaurant, but it has the best fish and chips and cheese curds! It's super casual, only a couple tables and you order at the counter. There's a fun where's Waldo next to one of the tables that my kids like to look at while we wait for the food. They also offered to bring it to you in your car, so it's super flexible and the staff is really nice. We always get it to go and we always have amazing food every single time! Family vacation 2021...bringing the California variant of COVID-19 to your city. We came here on a Monday night. We were greeted by the cashier. The place was suprisingly busy. The cashier told me that we should try the walleye (fish and chips) and the poutine. So we went with his suggestion. While waiting for the food to cook, I was able to grab some condiments for myself. They had their regular tartar sauce and a key lime jalapeno sauce the sounded interesting. The walleye along with the sauces were good. It was a good whitefish that we don't get in California. Although we are currently living in strange times when you can't dine-in, Mac's Fish & Chips was pretty good for take-away as the Europeans call it. I'm always hesitant to get takeout breaded fish because it typically doesn't travel well (the breading gets soggy and the fish gets cold quickly), desperate times call for desperate measures, especially during Lent and Anchor Fish & Chips doesn't open until 4 PM most days so I had to improvise. I ordered the full size cod fish & chips which comes with three decent sized pieces of cod and hand cut fries. Ketchup, tartar sauce and lemon were provided as well and after a quick 6 minute drive, I was eating my fish and it held up better than I expected. The fish and fries were well prepared and salted nicely. The cod was pretty good and not fishy at all. During the coronavirus lock-down, I want to support local mom & pop restaurants as much as possible and I think it's really encouraging that places like Mac's is doing their best to provide good takeout service, e.g. bringing the food out to your car when you arrive. I hope many of these places can survive after we've all been locked inside for almost 2 months and I'm fearful that many won't, so please support your local businesses! Side note: Mac's is located near the intersection of Diamond Lake Road (54th) and Lyndale. One of my favorite place for lunch at work. It's a small restaurant with only 2 tablets and a sitting bar due to covid. During the summer they do have some tablets outside as well. They have a small private lot and free street parking. One of the best fish and chips places I've been to. If you're not a seafood fan, they do have chicken tenders. They come in 1/2 portion or full portion or you can do combo. I honestly get full with the 1/2 portion but my bf can finish a full order so depends on your appetite. I think the price is a little on the higher end but the fish is quality. You also get a side of slaws but can always substitute for more chips :). 4/5 Recently they added tacos to their menu and it is SO good! I have to say that these tacos are pricey. The shrimp taco I got today is $4.25. Honestly think it could be a little more affordable. 4/5 Seems like it's always the same guy when I go there who is really nice and welcoming. 5/5 for his service! My foodie buddy and I were in the mood for some fish so we decided to try Mac's Fish & Chips. Their location was easy to find. There is a small parking lot next door which is a bonus for Mpls restaurants, and a few tables out front for outdoor dining. We ordered the Cod, Walleye, Poutine and Clam strips. Our big tray of food came out quickly. At first glance, everything looked great. Our fish orders came with fries and standard coleslaw. We started with the clams which were excellent! These were light and crispy with a savory seasoned flour. We couldn't stop eating those clams. Next we tried the poutine. While we felt the cheese curds could have been melted a bit more, the cheese curds were large and plentiful. The fries were very good but maybe the best part was the beef gravy. This gravy tasted as if it were slow cooked for hours. The gravy was rich and had a lot of flavor. Finally we got to our fish. Both the Cod and Walleye were fried perfectly. A tempura like batter that was perfect for the flaky fish. There were little flakes of salt on the fish which was perfect. While both were very good, we actually preferred the Walleye which was a bit sweeter. Those Clam strips were definitely our favorite. All in all a very affordable and very good meal. Located just minutes south east of Lake Harriet on Lyndale is this awesome little to-go style restaurant (with a few tables for dining in). Mac's menu isn't huge but straight to the point. Crispy, flakey fish, fries and, fish tacos. Offering Cod, Walleye and, Halibut; as well as, Shrimp, Clams and, Chicken. They also have Poutine (one of my favorite dishes) and Salt Water Taffy. I indulged on fish tacos which were amazing. I went with a Shrimp, a cod and a walleye. All 3 tacos came with a healthy portion of perfectly battered fish, mango pico and, key lime jalapeño sauce. The mango pico added a wonderful sweetness and while the jalapeño sauce wasn't very spicy it gave just enough bite and acidity to balance the pico. I also ordered Poutine. And well... poutine! Mac's delicious chips covered with fresh curds and hot gravy. No thrills here, just great Poutine made the way it should be. I'm always on the lookout for the best chicken strips and Mac's is new to my list of favorites. The online ordering process was really easy and I was able to pick up my food very quickly. Despite being a small place, they appeared to be quite busy with a lot of takeout orders waiting to be claimed. Everything about my meal was amazing. The breading on the chicken was slightly flaky and soooooo good. Restaurants usually make coleslaw too soggy, but here it was perfect and crunchy. The fries were wonderful as well. Mac's sends out email discount offers which isn't something I get from a lot of other places. It's nice and I'll be taking advantage of that soon. I'm excited by the thought of having another meal from here. I don't eat fish, but I imagine the other options would be equally as good as the chicken, if not better since there are so many fish options. If you're still pondering about eating here, just do it. Bothe were really good, but I didn't really like the batter on the shrimp, it was cornmeal and I didn't personally care for the seasoning on it, but the fish was delish!!! Apparently, I was back for a day 2. i will say this: the flavor on the fish wasn't as delicious as it was my first visit. It is a small shop with decent choice, you can just get the fish, one fish and chips, or classic come with two fish and chips. I got the classic combo since I cannot decide which type of fish I wanna get. I ask the staff there, and they are recommend to try walleye and cod. I try different fish and chips when I go to different state and city. This is definitely one of the best fish and chips I ever eat. They fried right after you order, and they won't overcook it And you can feel the crunchy. But overall I like walleye after try two different fish. They don't offer very many options, but the options that are offered are pretty good. I usually stick with the walleye (one of my fav fish to eat), but I recently tried the cod. The cod was pretty good, but I'll probably stick with my walleye. In addition to a solo piece of fish, they also offer their fish in a taco. If you like sauces with a kick, you've got to try out their Key Lime Jalapeno Sauce. Its like a spicy mayo.
