But as soon as I had something of a serious nature for the first time in my life, he for some reason is not able to accept my complaints as valid. And he breaks one of the rules of doctoring which is to believe the patient's complaints! He has actually for the past seven months been denying that what I describe as my symptoms are happening! This is the logical extension of his sunny disposition. I remember now that he has often been that way. I once told him that after wearing a heart monitor for 13 days, the result was first degree heart block. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" My stepdaughter told him he had a spot on her lung of 0.5 centimeter. He said, "Oh, that's nothing!" And I remember how in past years, I always leave his office feeling better than when I came. But the day came seven months when I presented with a serious condition, and he has persisted and persisted since in saying, "Oh, that's nothing. It's all in your mind." (He has actually told me that the main thing wrong with me is my mind. I learned that that is called "gaslighting.") And I know that isn't true, and I know he is wrong. And if this same thing happens to you, you should be apprised that that is the day you must make a decision--whether to continue to put yourself in danger or to part ways.

I have seen him for 6 or 7 years now and can honestly say that he is the best doctor I've ever had -- for the following reasons: 1) He has an enormous range of knowledge about each and every disease and malady a person can suffer, and always has useful recommendations about what to do or who to see next in each case. 2) He follows up carefully about every little thing you've talked about as if he were a family member rather than just a hired consultant. 3) He answers email, sometimes voluminously. I resisted one of his recommendations and got hundreds of words in my inbox carefully arguing why I wrong. Very few people can change my mind as quickly as he can. 4) You can call his direct number whenever you like so as to avoid insensitive or incompetent office staff. 5) He makes sure his office staff is competent, sensitive and friendly. They usually remember my first name, which makes things easier. 6) When I needed a letter of recommendation to help get my fiance here from Berlin, he sacrificed lots of free time and came up with a beautiful letter even though he knew he wouldn't be paid for his effort. It's a miracle when you meet someone so generous that it haunts you to realize that you'll never be able to give back to him what he has so willingly given to you.

He begins every appointment with a consultation at a desk and then the treatment is in a different room. This strikes me as a workflow filled with care. I had ample time to ask questions and he answered them honestly. He was happy to use the phrase "I don't know" when he didn't, a phrase which some doctors don't seem to have in their lexicon. His prices are extremely reasonable. He was in network for me, but the potential out of pocket costs are accessible. Tisch Hospital charges $4,000 for a rabies shot out of pocket. He charges $400. It's rare to go to a doctor without any worry of ruinous costs. He and his staff have what I would describe as New York attitudes, by which I mean they are honest, to the point, and don't BS you. If you require an extra calming doctor who will tuck you in to bed and kiss your forehead -- I completely appreciate if you do want that -- this is probably not the doctor for you. If you don't need a forehead kiss but just want cost-conscious, informed treatment, he's your guy.

Dr. Attoe was referred to me by a trusted friend so I would have never thought I had to write such…read morean upsetting review. I went to Dr. Attoe for a checkup plus a consultancy on a series of symptoms including chronic fatigue and irregular period. She seemed such a decent well prepared lady and I would have never expected to experience what I am about to write. For the fatigue part, I thought I was simply suffering from iron deficiency (which I had in the past). Dr. Attoe suggested to get that checked, together with the thyroid and the other routine check-ups. After around 10 days, motivated by worsened symptoms, I call in to ask if there were any news. So Dr. Attoe calls me back saying that actually my analysis (including cholesterol, thyroid, and all the rest) were all good and within the norms. So, when I asked her then what was her suggestion to lessen my symptoms, she suggested that life in NY is stressful and that many patients complaint about fatigue (I think she said roughly 20%). She also added to go more out to the park and enjoy the day. I was somewhat confused because I have lived in NY for 7 years, I am used to a hardworking life (full of stresses) yet never had I felt that way. As a daughter of an MD I tend to trust doctors and their expertise though I knew something wasn't write with her suggestion. And sure enough, around one week later I receive the print out of my analysis and turns out that my analysis are NOT ok. My ranges for ALT (which are produced by the liver) are higher than the norm and so are two other values, including cholesterol levels. I think that what might have happened is that Dr. Attoe read someone's else analysis over the phone. If this weren't enough I called in twice to ask to kindly speak to the doctor and never got called back (although I explained what the issue was). Another doctor that I consulted suggested to investigate further the liver as that could explain my strong fatigue. To sum, I would suggest Dr. Attoe that perhaps she should go less to the park and concentrate more on her patients!
