Stopped in today for lunch and got some amazing authentic Mexican food. I ordered 4 tacos -…read morecarnitas, al pastor and adobada. They were all great but I favored the carnitas. The meat was super tender and tasty. The best part was the sauce they bring out to the table in little squirt bottles. The red sauce was a chipotle flavored salsa and the green was just as amazing, maybe even more so. Prices were really reasonable, $1.75 per taco and other menu items were under $10. The only downside was that it took a little while (about 20 minutes) for it to be made. Of course, that means it was cooked fresh! I can't wait to come back!

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm a taco snob. No Taco Bell taco facsimiles for me. I want the real thing. I…read morewant to walk into a shop and see the menu in Spanish and find the tables filled with Latino immigrants longing for a taste of home. That's what you'll find at Taqueria Hidalgo. The menu is not extensive, tacos, burritos, soup (posole on the weekends) sandwiches, and quesadillas but who needs an extensive menu? We are really here for the tacos, right? So, let's talk about the tacos. I'm a huge fan of tripas (tripe) tacos. Growing up in East Tennessee I would never have imagined myself willingly eating the intestines of any animal but here I am, longing for those delectable morsels of deliciousness on a good tortilla with lime and a fiery green salsa. Taqueria Hidalgo delivers. The tripe tacos (order it cooked crispy) are delicious. The owner tells me they sell a huge amount of the tripe tacos and I see why - each crispy little piece of tripe is an earthy, porky, bite of heaven. Add the standard onions, cilantro, and lime along with some of the homemade green salsa and it's an explosion of flavor in your mouth. For the less advanced taco connoisseurs, they also have chicken, steak, marinated pork, etc. but be aware these are Mexican style street tacos - no cheese and served on soft corn tortillas. I'm so happy we have this family run business in Richmond. It is an asset to the community. Check it out!

Drove out to Richmond to meet some friends for dinner…read more We ordered some wings and choriqueso for an app 10/10. I always like to try wings at Mexican restaurants and they are always great. My friend ordered the molcajete and everything was super tender and it came with a house sauce at the bottom of it to give it extra flavor. It has a variety of meats and fried cheese and a cactus piece on it. Definitely big enough for two and unique! I ordered the carne asada, my piece came with more fat than I'm used to. Although the flavor was great. I paired it with a michelada and it came out a little spicy. The service was great they were on top of it. The inside of the restaurant was gorgeous too, very colorful and cozy. Seats were comfortable, overall a good dinner experience.

I judge every trip to a new Mexican place by their version of the Speedy Gonzalez. This is a taco, an enchilada bean or rice. I had the beef version of this here, while it was solid, it did not blow my socks off. Beef was seasoned well, everything was piping hot and the taste was pretty bland overall. The refried beans were very tasty and the little bit of cheese on top was a great touch! I did not care for the salsa and chips. It didn't have much zip to it or any onion or cilantro flavors that I like. Chips were thick but warm and sprinkled with salt. I was there in the middle of the day and the place seemed a little dark. Service was fast and friendly. I will give it another whirl and try something different. But there are other Mexican places I will try before I go back to this one. Will give them an shout out for putting the crunchy taco on a bed of lettuce.

Unfortunately, even though this place always seems to have alot of cars in the parking lot, it was not good. The server was really nice - fast and friendly. The indoor decor was pretty cool. But we went there for good mexican and the food was really bad. It wasn't even mediocre as I can make better mexican at home. We had the Guadalajra and the Vegetarian Combo A along with the Beef/Chicken Taco. The food was overwhelmingly bland. Every single item lacked flavor. As if they didn't season anything at all. The beans were a pile of mushed beans, with no actual bean chunks and no flavor. No garlic, no salt, no butter - no flavor at all. Same with the chalupa and the enchilada. The enchilada sauce was bland, almost like a base tomato sauce. The meat didn't have any flavor at all. The Guadalaraja (chicken burrito and chicken enchilada) - which hubby had said that his was pretty meh. He also said he didn't need to go back there again. And later finally admitted it was pretty bad. Sorry, but I can't in good conscience recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Cool, except... half the tables were sitting there just waiting to be used. We ask about eating at the bar--nope, "not allowed." We walk in to order a drink while we wait and people are happily feasting at the bar. Before we could even sip the drinks we ordered, our table was suddenly ready. It was like the restaurant gods flipped a switch: awkward start over, let the good times roll. From then on, the night was smooth sailing. Our server was a rockstar. Attentive, friendly, and somehow always appearing right when we needed them. Now let's talk food. The mac and cheese. Oh. My. Goodness. Forget everything you thought you knew about mac and cheese. This wasn't a side dish--it was a life event. Creamy, cheesy perfection that deserves its own fan club. I'd come back just for that bowl of happiness. So yes, the beginning was a little sitcom-worthy, but Millstone redeemed itself in a big way. Great vibe, great food, and a must-visit in downtown Richmond. If you haven't been, stop depriving yourself and go already.
