The goal is to introduce people to theaters they have never been to before. If you want these tickets, sign up for their email list. Pay close attention to the time and day they become available as tickets go very quickly, often in as little as an hour. A variety of types of theater including comedy and musical theater are included. I've attended performances for the past four years and all have been fun and it has introduced me to a number of lesser known venues and performing groups (the large, well-known theaters such as the Zach Scott also participate).

I, a…read more76 year old native Austinite arrived at the Long Center about 20 minutes early (at the entrance to the parking garage). The next 15 minutes were spent looking for a parking place in the garage. I ended up parking at the very top and taking the elevator down. There were several other older ladies as well there who don't quite move quickly. By the time we walked to the door of the Long Center it was 3 minutes after the start of a 90-minute opera. I raced to get to my seat but was escorted to the upper balcony. As I entered there was a lady bandaging her leg on the stairs. From falling there. When I got to the upper balcony it was pitch dark and the helper had a flashlight that didn't work. It took me a while for my eyes to adjust and finally was able to be seated, slightly short of breath from the race and the altitude of those seats. Other nicely dressed older ladies came in after me and stumbled around to find seats. We were informed we would have to sit there for the duration as there was no intermission for a 90 minute performance. Why? I ask you why? Along with a canteen of water, a flashlight and a first aid kit do I need to bring a catheter to the Opera? This is ridiculous. I am pretty ticked off and will not attend again until something is done to remedy the deeply flawed, user-unfriendly experience I had. Navigating in the dark for a 76-year-old is not something that is a healthy activity. You do realize a lot of your audience are seniors, don't you? You do realize that you all probably go to the valet or VIP parking I passed at the one minute marker entrance to the parking lot and then go to your box seats? You're not experiencing what other people are experiencing and I'm afraid you've lost track. I hope you will do something to remedy.

A summer musical for kids at a price that can't be beat...FREE! I love free…read more This year they performed The Curious Case of Rumplestiltskin. It was a little over an hour long, a perfect length of time for the kids. The music was campy and the costumes, lights, props, and sets were colorful enough to hold the attention of my 22 month old. I think it was a hit for her first play/musical experience. The George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center Boyd Vance Theatre is small and holds about 130 people. I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. They started handing out tickets about an hour before the 11am show. They opened the doors about a half hour before the show. All first come, first served. They had free face painting, a free raffle, Girl Scout patches for $3, and T-shirts for $10-15. Donations are accepted to benefit the production. At the end, they have all the actors come out and sign the kid's programs and hand out little toy trinkets. My princess was most infatuated with the three little piggies character. She was so excited to meet them! Can't wait to go back next year!

They set up was pretty cozy with couches up front and then chairs/booths behind. Not a big venue which helps make sure everyone can see and gets to participate. There were several ticks I just could not believe how they did them. Everyone, EVERYONE was shocked! Learned that the magicians rotate sooo you may have opportunity to see different ones based on when you go. Highly recommend to catch this while they are hosting, I'll be back by the end of their tenure.

Last night the mister and I watch the Violet Crown Radio Players re-enact a radio show adaptation…read moreof a Perry Mason mystery, "The Crooked Candle". It was a great way to spend a Thursday night and the price was right. Free. The retro-vintage radio drama performance featured goat herders, ship captains, adultery, and much more! The event was sponsored by the Harry Ransom Center and performed by the Violet Crown Radio Players in the Jessen Auditorium on the UT campus. An Austin-based performance troupe, the VCRPs, recreate live radio experiences complete with vintage costumes and advertising. In reading the bios, every player has vast experience in the arts, on stage, writing, singing and acting. The Harry Ransom Center sponsors the VCRPs throughout the year. We plan to attend the July 10th performance of a 1950s radio show, "Dangerous Assignment". Check the Harry Ransom Center website for a schedule. Parking is sketchy but we found a park on 21st street. Unfortunately I would not recommend this studio. We paid $285 for the recital package and there…read morewere only 3 practices total. Communication and organization were poor throughout the session. At one point parents were texted only 10 minutes before practice (cancelled), even though we live 20 minutes away. Costumes were handed out only two days before recital, leaving almost no time to address sizing issues. No measurements or sizing confirmation were done beforehand, and my daughter's costume was extremely oversized and unwearable. The only solution offered was pinning it, and a refund was declined despite the costume not fitting at all. After being with the studio for over a year, this experience was disappointing enough that we decided to withdraw our daughter from future classes. I would also like to add there was one practice my daughter left her water tumbler and I text the teacher immediately and asked to grab it the following class and we were just ignored completely.

Tap n Toe school of dance has always treated my daughter so well in her journey for performing…read morearts. They offer a variety of classes from tap, ballet, hip-hop, jazz contemporary and free special-needs dance. They work with the children each session to memorize several counts of eight that end up into a dance performance at the end of the season. The dance performances have been everywhere from malls to downtown at ballet Austin where they put on a beautiful production for all the children. My only wish is that they would work harder to traditionally refine each movement.

We were at Penfold this weekend for the first time to see Ordinary Days. What a charming…read moreperformance - the cast was wonderful and I loved the musical - it made me cry! It's a small theater and it isn't a big, fancy production, but it had so much heart. We'll definitely be back for their next show!

This review is for their production of A War of the Worlds by Jarrett King that is taking…read moreplace/took place at Ground Floor Theatre in June 2022. I was blown away in the best possible way. From the opening scene the cast shone, with phenomenal vocal range and depth, many doing multiple accents throughout. They worked well together as an ensemble, feeding off each others energy with quick, believable reactions as events unfolded. Jarrett King's rendition of the classic tale brought in modern themes in a way that was delicately done without banging you over the head on the dangers of fake news and racial inequality. I read the spoilers beforehand and was on edge about how it was going to play out, but when things fell apart they happened in a believable and natural way without live gunfire or too much of what we see on the news these days. Introducing the chaos that happens outside the studio during the historic events around Orson Wells' famous production helped showcase that nothing we do exists in a bubble, while enabling greater depth for the characters. It should tell you something that I am considering going back to see it a second time. Would highly recommend checking it out and considering future productions at Penfold Theatre Co!
