OK, so it's PROM SEASON!!!! If you know, like I know, it's extremely difficult and equally important to have an amazing makeup artist. I'm old school, so I grew up on M.A.C. Lipgloss and Ruby Woo. Last year, I struggled with finding the right makeup and had zero luck with a makeup artist for her junior prom (if you don't remember, reference my previous reviews). This year, I told myself for senior prom I would find the perfect makeup artist to assure everything would look fantastic for her high school grand finale. I called two days prior (I know, so much for preparation, right?). I was advised that though they were booked, there may be a chance for securing an artist via walk-in, so today's later, we crossed our fingers and toes and moseyed into the M.A.C. in Emeryville. We were greeted upon entering by the makeup artists who were all diligently working on clients as well as multitasking assisting customers with locating desired items and checking out. After perusing the store, I was approached by the store manager, Matthew, and I explained to him that I was advised to arrive between 2-4 p.m., that I was hoping to make a purchase and have makeup applied for my daughter's prom. He did inform me that they were fully booked and that we likely weren't going to be seen; however, he did agree to check the schedule. Luckily when a previous appointment was a no-show, Matthew asked how soon I needed to leave and explained to me that there would be frequent breaks as he assisted customers, but if I was accepting of the terms, he would service my daughter. Matthew was friendly, communicative, informative, and professional. Truthfully, I can't say enough about how positive and empowering this experience was for my daughter; she was properly matched, given both skincare and college advice while being included in the decision-making process. Matthew did a phenomenal job! My daughter was happy and I myself was grateful and throughly impressed. My daughter applied her lashes herself at home as it was her personal preference. We received so many compliments on her makeup and walked away with items recommended and used to create and possibly recreate the look. Since I've posted her pictures online, friends and teammates have reached out to hopefully secure a makeup appointment for themselves at the M.A.C. store in Emeryville. We will most definitely be returning customers as we have quite a few special events coming up as we prepare for her high school graduation. Helpful Tip: Call in advance to secure an appointment especially on the weekends. read more

The WORST makeup experience I've ever had! Phillip was extremely rude from start to finish, and that in itself was shocking due to the fact you could tell he was "pretending" to be courteous. But when it's not genuine, it's always transparent. I should've read the reviews first; I would've avoided this location. I don't understand how he is the Store Manager based on these reviews showing a clear history of rude behavior and dissatisfied customers, but perhaps MAC doesn't care about their clients. When I arrived to the store, I had the unfortunate experience of Phillip doing my makeup. He listened to NOTHING I asked for and wanted in a look. And it was clear he wasn't a good artist period based on his techniques! My foundation was orange, the liner around my eyes was crooked, horrible blending, clumpy mascara, and creasing around my eyes. I told him repeatedly I didn't like the look, and each time he made it worse. He had no idea what he was doing! I ran out the store, fast, which is why I didn't get a chance to take any pics - and ran over to Sephora to wipe the garish 80s drug addict-prostitute makeup Phillip gave me, and it was there that a real, talented makeup artist gave me the look that I wanted...and it was there that I spent my money on all products she used on me. Avoid this location and avoid Phillip at all costs!! read more

I got my makeup done here yesterday, and as someone who hasn't done professional makeup in nearly 10 years, I was nervous it would end up too glam for me. Nope! I brought in a couple inspiration photos, and Keelee (not sure of spelling) totally nailed it. She was really knowledgeable about the products, and gave me the look I was going for -- but better! MAC trains their artists well, and as long as you bring in a photo you like, you're going to be in good hands. read more

This store has the worst customer service I've ever experienced!! We were completely ignored by the staff on the sales floor when walked in!! Philip who claims to be the store manager customer service was horrible!! He yelled , and was very condescending towards us!! Every time i make a trip to the East Bay to get my MAC on, Shanille W helps me. Shanille is very caring, very sweet and professional. Shanille always checks in me but is not over bearing. She also offers me makeup remover sheets rather thannthe hardh alcohol i use. She gives solid advice and i feel i can trust her. Honestly this location doesnt have much parking and its far from me but i like MAC stores so i have to come out here so its nice to be able well taken care of when i do make it out. read more

I agree with the other reviewers that Philip the manager is rude and condescending and should not be managing any store. This was my first time in the store and he was so unwelcoming even though I was the only customer there. The saleswoman was helpful in picking out a lipstick color, but then Philip went out of his way to make me feel stupid when I wanted to check out and actually make a purchase. Okay first and foremost, I am here to honor GEORGE (Jorge?!) at the Bay Street MAC store. I went yesterday and he helped (gently) guide me toward the perfect highlighter. That alone is grounds for George to get a RAISE. That day, I did purchase the wrong shade of foundation. It *used* to be my shade, but now I work outside and I am a different shade, for sure. I was in denial. I took home my little N4 and put it on and... looked like a birthday clown. I'll be real. My therapist was like, "it's a little light." I knew I had to go back to the store. I went back today and George had me remove my makeup so he could color-match me. Within minutes, he had my perfect shade, and he was able to answer all my questions about setting powder and which product goes first, second, etc. I described to him what I was going for, and he was instantly able to point me toward a few products that would help me achieve that look. I was assured when I called that they closed at 8pm. Closing at 8pm does not mean closed at 7:45pm. Doors are locked, lights are on, signs reflect 8:00pm. I called twice and get told they had to take a break and there is nothing they can do about it. As someone that manages a team, I understand the importance of breaks and lunches. Nonetheless, if I call and get verbal confirmation that 8pm is the closing time, then I expect to be helped at 7:45pm. I drove all the way to Emeryville, wasted my time, paid for parking, walked to the store, had to call twice, second time, get told there is nothing that can be done? If I would have been told we close at 8, but 7:45pm is the cut off time then I would be more empathetic and understood. Sometimes, we have to bend the rules for a customer, especially if you were the one that did not properly communicate, and if it's a staffing issue, then management should step in to be able to accommodate because it is not ok to waste someone's time, especially if as the customer they did their part in assuring hours of operations and stocked items. No apology was ever given, nor accommodations discussed. Also, who takes a break 15min before closing, as breaks typically reflect 15 minutes. . And if they were on break, why answer the phones? Highly upset customer. read more

I know this is the day after Trump declared a National Emergency over the Coronavirus, but please, if we aren't allowed to touch absolutely ANYTHING in the store then you might as well close. I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon (3/14), excited to spend the next 20 minutes hiding here from the rain, but my joy quickly soured. Upon entering I was asked to sanitize my hands. At first, I was thankful the two ladies working here were taking precautionary measures to keep the store, the products, and everyone safe. However, after sanitizing my hands and proceeding to check out their new shadows, one of the workers continuously muttered to me finally concluding that I was not to touch any products. "Oh" I said, surprised that MACs doors would be open if people weren't allowed to swatch. I just picked up the products then to read the labels. She then offered to lead me to a drawer of shadows in pallets to swatch on napkins justifying it that "it's just like when you watch an influencer"... (by swatching it on white paper?) After she swatched two reds, I stood a little dumbfounded and asked if I could rub the napkin to my skin to get an idea of the color. She looked at me for a moment before saying no, that due to liability reasons I couldn't. I gave her another "Oh". Finally, I picked up some blushes to read their names because I was looking to buy the gingerly shade and she comes up to me and says, "we can't have you touching anything in the store either" and proceeds to wipe everything down IN FRONT OF WHERE IM STANDING. As I was leaving, back into the pouring rain, she called out to me "Thank you!" I said,"You too." and she goes, "Have a good day" In a way, it felt like she was trying to rub in how much of a jerk she was being. I went next-door to sephora. I doubt MAC's policy that day was to have customers come in, sanitize (for no reason pretty much), and then not touch anything. I really think that the two women working their were making the rules up as they went and it kinda ruined my day being treated like that. At least put up some signs, you know? read more

This place will make you feel like a million bucks. Seriously. Originally I accidentally posted this on the wrong location (oops), but now this review is where it belongs. I came here in an awful mood after having a terrible experience at the Sephora nextdoor. I wasn't even going to come in here because I felt so bad, but my friend told me I should. And I'm glad I did. MAC on Bay St is a really small and personal store. When I came in, I was on the verge of tears. There were a few customers in the shop already, but the makeup artist / staff member on duty noticed me immediately and gave a warm hello. Her name is Janee/JP (my phone doesn't have the fancy e, so I'm going to call her JP) and she is THE BEST. I let her know about what happened at Sephora and her energy made me start to feel better right away. Although there were other people that needed help, JP juggled my questions and helped others at the same time without any trouble at all. I'd gone to Sephora hoping for a full makeover (which is what I'd booked), but when I came into MAC I was in such low spirits that it was hard to ask about even brow advice. I thought that maybe MAC would be the same. Nope. JP was an actual goddess. She did my brows, my eyes, my lips, the whole shebang. The entire time, she was super friendly and we made conversation. JP is freaking good at what she does. I mentioned I would be wearing a yellow shirt later, so she even added some yellow... something?... to my tearducts to make my look pop. Then, when the makeover was over, she helped me shop through the store and get a couple small things to help me get adjusted to a makeup routine. It was awesome. When I came into this store, I was feeling defeated and painfully small and like I was going to cry. It was like JP knew this and went out of her way to help me out. She really went the extra mile. Because of her, I would absolutely recommend this store to anyone even if they weren't asking for recommendations. She made me feel beautiful when I felt ugly, and for that I cannot praise this store enough. (And yes, my profile picture is the makeup she did.) read more

I was declined after setting an appointment at another Mac store and was able to get fit in on 2/11/2020, i wouldn't say it saved my life but they saved my birthday which I have memories to think about all the peer joy that this day was able to bring because I felt really pretty about myself and not only am I a Tom boy I was able to get walked through why this is going on and how. So this is like 6 months late but I can still remember it pretty vividly. May 18 was the day of my prom. I made an appointment at Sephora next door and I happened to be late cause of traffic and I wasn't reminded a head of time to call in that I will be late. When I came in, as usual that SEPHORA next door is garbage. Recommended me to go to MAC so I came in with doubts that it would be the same but NO! I was so wrong, Janeè welcome a lot of people in, so nice and I felt comforted because of her. She helped me do my makeup while helping others too because MAC was a little short on staff on that day. I loved how she helped others and balance things out when the shop has gotten hectic. I recommend calling for Janeè so much because of what she does for other people. Love you Janeè! Just wanted to think Jorge for his services! I first went into the store asking about services for my daughter graduation pictures. He explained that full face was no longer available but can get a quick 15 min service on the day.. fast forward I brought her back in 2 weeks later and yay he was there and available to do her face.. he was very helpful and attentive even when other people came into the store because he was the only person working at the time .. he defiantly understood the assignment and Goy my baby girl right! I just wanted to write a review for Ashley who did my makeup for a wedding that I attended and her makeup turned out beautifully! I had never gotten my make up done before and was nervous that I would walk out of MAC looking like Pennywise. But Ashley was amazing from the beginning. She greeted my mother (who was also getting her make up done) and I with a friendly smile and attitude and was that way throughout the entire time we were in the store. Walked into the store and IMMEDIATELY their security started following me around the store like i was stealing trying to steal. I don't even know when MAC got security and this is my 1st ever seeing security in any MAC store. Since security made me feel uncomfortable and acted like i wanted to steal they WONT EVER be getting my black business or my black dollars! Let me start off by saying that I am always super last minute on everything. On Saturday April 28th I came to this MAC store in hopes of trying to squeeze my helpless self into a spot to get my make up done after trying Sephora and not booking weeks in advance like I should've done. It was my birthday party that day and everyone and everything was already making me upset so if I didn't get a spot it was going to be bad! So here I was outside the store before they even open and when they do open I rush in there along with 3 other girls hoping that someone is able to take us in. A pretty girl named Zaira took down my name and was able to squeeze me in because one of her clients ended up not showing up! YAaAaaaaAAAsss honeeeeey. Zaira was so sweet and bubbly. I've never encountered such a happy person before. She took the time to talk to me and made good convo. She listened to my skin needs and needless to say, she slayed my whole existence! I was a happy camper. I did the $60 product purchase instead of paying a flat price for the make over. I left an hour later feeling like the one! This place is a really good example of how customer service is centered around forcing and manipulating customers to buy more products so that the sales people hit their target and get commission. I have been to this store a couple of times and I've seen the ladies try to sell me stuff that I didn't want, and yes, I can always say no and walk away but it gets really annoying when you feel like you are being taken advantage of and let's face it everyone is not a strong social person. I've seen them write their scores (what appeared to be) frequently on a piece of sheet right in front of you which is a little fucked up. So if you are someone who doesn't like fucked up customer service, please stay away from this store. read more

Twice I have been accused of stealing from the 4th Street MAC store in Berkeley California, by the same staff- an Asian woman named Lexi. In both occasions she refused to help find a replace meant product ( I got the wrong color, can't try on makeup during the pandemic). I then asked to return it and didn't have my receipt, to which she implied that I stole the concealer. I bought it on line, and wasn't in the system. MAC needs to train their staff on problem solving instead of assuming that BLACK customers are stealing. This has happened to me twice with the same staff member. I will never buy another MAC product again. I called their line to file a complaint and the woman on the phone took no information down, nor did I get a response email. read more

Walked into MAC today while there were about 6 employees doing each other's makeup and taking pictures. Not once did anyone ask us if we needed assistance even though we stood there waiting to ask them for a specific product. When they were finished taking their group pictures they proceeded to walk past us and WE had to engage them for assistance. We won't be going back. Lack of management and poor customer service. This was the worst MAC store I've ever been to. Thankfully Sephora was only 3 stores down and super welcoming. read more

Everyone here is approachable, friendly, helpful, and quick. One of the employees had a difficult task of trying to replicate a limited addition lip liner color for me, which she did with flying colors. She was more than willing and patient to help. Another employee was very quick to approach and help during another visit. He was informative, yet not pushy where I would be put-off from purchasing my items. One of the products I'd purchased had something wrong with it, I returned back later in the week and manager and the employee I spoke on the phone were apologetic and more than willing to help. I really couldn't ask for a better customer service experience, which in all honesty is rare to find in a beauty focus industry shop. So thank you MAC Bay St. team in Emeryville. Normally I wouldn't want to shop at Mac stores vs online but I would definitely come back to pick up Mac collection pieces at this location. read more
