Fast forward to us not only being emotionally crushed by a sudden death, but the fact we had no funeral plans. It was unerving to call them while my fathers body was still in the hospital room next to me, but the woman who I talked to on a weekend evening calmly explained the process and assured me we'd get through this as quickly as possible to start the grieving process. They handled everything as they coordinated certificates, transportation, and even got us in touch with a cemetery I had been trying to find a contact for years to for myself. They helped me create a customized service for dad, and were very accommodating to help keep my mother's stress levels down during and after the funeral. The attention to every detail and the personalized care made me get funeral plans for my entire family with them. I cannot thank them enough on thank you Thursday for helping me get through the worst days of my life.

If you choose to use Sunset N, please request someone else than Mimi who was very unprofessional & uncaring towards the family grieving. My brother young daughters who had never been thru a loss were grieving; my sisters & I paid the whole funeral expenses upfront, and I met with Mimi during the arrangements. However, Mimi refused to communicate with me, only thru my niece who were grieving & needed my guidance. Mimi was very uncaring towards the family, I left several messages for her and her manager, never did any of them return my calls.

While I did not have direct contact with Porter Loring as far as funeral and rosary arrangements, I was impressed with the services. Everyone was extremely helpful and attentive to our family. The facility is nice, not super new, but spacious and respectful for the events held there. The reason I'm writing this review is because of Clayton (didn't catch his last name). My grandpa is blind and was having some trouble walking, and Clayton was there assisting him throughout the service held at our church. He even helped me guide him from the car to the gravesite where we buried my granny. I thought that was going above and beyond for a grieving widower, and such a simple act, but wanted to be sure he got the recognition. He was very polite in speaking with members of our family, and was helpful in announcing the after-service plans since we were all a little too distraught to do it ourselves. 5 stars for Clayton and Porter Loring!

This place does not care about you, or your family...might as well be a SCAM! I'm extremely disappointed with my recent experience at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home, and frankly nobody seems to care. The service and communication were unprofessional, and inadequate. The level of service and overall quality fell far below my expectations and what I believe to be acceptable standards upheld by a business dealing with such sensitive manners. 13 YEARS AGO, my grandfather was laid to rest here, and my family requested his name not be placed on his crip until the following month... fast forward a DECADE and then some. It is STILL not placed to satisfaction!!! Within the last two months a family member brought to my attention that his name still had not been placed.. I took immediate action, called to get an estimate, and was told I would be contacted back. After more than 5 attempts to get information , I was told THE PLAQUE HAD FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS FOR 13 YEARS!!!!!! Oopsies!!! Our bad! Since then I have been ran around the block more times than I can even begin to count. Having the issue handed over to multiple people during the process including Saul, DeAnna Rathke, and Pete. My largest issue resides in the fact that on Sept 10th I was ASSURED by the manager Pete, that the issue had been taken care of, and he was always available for any follow up need. I arrived back at the Funeral Home for the first time, last Wednesday October 1st to find my Grandfathers name had only been PARTIALLY mounted...3 of the letters STILL sat dangling off the wall... Since last Wednesday I have called 5 times, only to be told Pete was in a meeting, and unavailable EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I was ensured after each attempt that Pete would return my call, to follow up. Since then, I have had NO CONTACT BACK. Finally, I call this morning 10/7 at 930 and request to for a 6th time now, to speak with Pete... again you guessed it, Pete is in a meeting. I asked if I could possibly have an estimate as to when I could call back, and be successful in reaching the manager, Pete... the lady of the phone said i'm not sure maybe 11-1130 would be a good time! I thanked her, and ended the call. Here is where my largest issue lies.. I call back again at 1130, as instructed, only to be told that Pete was in fact not in office today.. soooo why was I told 3 hours prior that he was in a meeting. PATHETIC IGNORANCE! Sunset Memorial is a sad excuse of a company, honestly I'm not sure how they remain open with this level of disconnect and incompetence. If it was up to me, my family member would be removed from this Sunset Memorial IMMEDIATELY. I've tried to be understanding to the fact that they are dealing with mourning families on the daily, who are presently losing their loved ones. However, after being beat around the bush COUNTLESS times in the matter, I no longer have patience nor compassion for this disgusting display of ignorance. Shame on every single one you.

He was highly responsive and flexible with all of our requests and kept us updated throughout. I can't say enough about the quality of work he provided us. The ceremony was beautiful, and overall we felt like our loved one was honored considering the short amount of time that everything was completed. They took care of the slideshow that was shown during the service, they also took care of the playlist of songs, and they took care of the programs that were handed out. Norma was also helpful in making sure the food was stocked and displayed along with ensuring our guests needs were taken care of. The bathrooms were clean, the whole building seemed to be clean, and it didn't seem like that detail was overlooked which was highly appreciated after viewing other funeral homes. The lighting was good, and we felt like the staff was good overall as well. There was also a private family room attached to the main service room if anyone needed a break or wanted to use it for a kids room. This place was full service from what I could tell. The only part that I wasn't extremely satisfied with was towards the very end where it felt like we were a little rushed out. We did book for an extra hour to ensure this didn't happen, but things happen and we understand that part wasn't understood my some of the staff. I would recommend this place to anyone based on the services provided that we received.

This is a hard review to write. My father passed away a couple of years ago, and he is at this…read morecemetery. We initially visited the day after his passing to make arrangements, and purposely selected a shady, wooded area in a row that allowed for raised monuments. The prices are high and the paperwork is extensive, but the staff we worked with were professional and all of our questions were answered. Even the day of the service, things were smooth and organized. Yet, nearly two and a half years later, he still does not have a headstone. There's a board that approves all markers and they have declined several drafts of what we want- and we are never provided with a rationale for why. Despite selecting a plot based on being able to use a raised headstone, we are now being told that the policy has changed. A design with a cross was declined, and staff (off the record) said it was due to the religious imagery. At a cemetery! Ridiculous. Whenever we request a copy of these mysterious policies, we get the run around. Nothing is ever provided in writing. Calls higher up to get this rectified are never returned. Apparently, once they get tens of thousands of your dollars and your loved ones remains, they could care less about customer service. Losing a parent is a heartbreaking experience I wouldn't wish upon anyone and Mission Park has made the ordeal exponentially more exhausting and painful with their constant paperwork and lack of humanity. I guess the one small upside is that the double-deep plot means I won't have to go through this elsewhere when my mother passes, we will just need to carve in the dates. Assuming they ever allow us to have a headstone. NOTE: There is only one single-stall bathroom available in the sales trailer, no facilities on site despite the massive chapel building that has been under construction for years. The first mortuary that we had (admittedly) lighted vetted answered our panicked midnight call, only to tell us that they would not receive a COVID patient and did not have the capacity to embalm my Dad. After quickly scanning online, I reached out to Porter Loring North and was immediately connected with the kindest intake specialist. Within two hours we received a confirmation call that my Dad had been collected and was safely resting. The next morning at 9am, we spoke with our designated funeral director, Monica, who thoroughly outlined next steps, timelines, etc. Due to backlog, we had a bit of a wait until my Dad's actual service and burial, but throughout the process, Monica had the expertise, empathy, and patience of a saint. Communication was constant and accurate. Porter Loring seamlessly navigated me and my Mom through all aspects of the service, from submitting forms to life insurance agencies, ordering death certificates, assisting us in creating a slideshow, and arranging flower deliveries. My Mom and I were never pressured into any sales, and even our smallest requests were honored. There was last minute confusion (on my part) regarding a song to play during my Dad's service, and Monica stepped in to correct the issue personally. My Dad's service was absolutely flawless, and I believe Porter Loring gave my Father the respect and dignity we could only hope to provide for him. He was the best! TL;DR - If you experience the death of a loved one, this is the only mortuary in San Antonio that I would ever recommend utilizing their services.
