Chain link fence along Eisenhauer Road is an eyesore and numerous well-known family graves sites have tilting monuments. Perpetual care seems limited. In areas under development worker tools left on sidewalks, demonstrating lack of management attention. Temporary fencing separating new areas under development is poorly maintained. Overall signs of management neglect that is not reflective of leading cemeteries in a major city like San Antonio. read more

After a year and a half there is still no plaque on my mother-in-law's resting place. When asked, there was no explanation as to what could have happened or how this was overlooked-Just a rude and defensive counselor saying there was nothing he could do about it. If you have a loved one there and you live out of town, have someone check on your loved one to ensure this company does what is promised. Follow-through is obviously NOT a priority. The counselor (Pete) that we spoke to was rude and not empathetic to our feelings and concern. The exact opposite of a what counselor should be. A MONTH ago I contacted this funeral home with time to spare making arrangements. We are flying family in from all over the country and now we are down to crunch time and I'm being avoided when I call. We started with over 2 months to spare I sat and made plans and wanted to add to the original plan... My 1st visit went fine. Although the guy entered the wrong cc number. He never called! I just happened to have called him! The plans the family made were simple but the sales man was not friendly, not helpful, only a bad sales technique. I had to run to keep up with the guy showing me the pavilion and the his sales speak. There is a plaque that has been ordered for well over 2 1/2 weeks and I can't get a receipt or anyone to return my call with a delivery GUESS for an eta even. The 1st visit I was told I could arrange a memorial the family has planned. While I was there I was told I could NOT have just a plaque and I HAD to leave my brothers ashes with SAUL to be placed at an unknown time and date during the week because he didn't want the workers to have overtime. Seriously? Why can I get a simple receipt? Why must I leave my brother with the funeral home period?! Why can't you return a call? Why can't I get an update on an eta of a plaque placed? If these were not my brother's wishes I'd be going elsewhere. I wanted to add to this review. The lack of concern is frightening! Still not even a reply to an email. After we went ahead and had the memorial at this cemetery we've had flowers returned because of this blunder! I'm writing to share my thoughts and my feelings on the services Sunset provided our family. Disappointed are the very nicest words I can find. I will not ever recommend the SERVICE you provide. In all actuality, you shouldn't even claim compassion. Right from the beginning, you treated my family as 2-bit low life. You had no idea the people that were to attend but I can assure you they are familiar to many. I assume because we were not interested in your cookie cutter services that things did not matter. You should consider remove Ing the statement you claim to not everyone is the same and we have the ability to plan to our liking. I was treated as a dumb old lady getting her car fixed at a gangster's chop shop on my 1st visit to make arrangements. And it only slightly got better on 2 phone calls and I sincerely believe it was due to the yelp review that I removed once you promised to make mistakes right. It took a week or more to even get a call back AFTER paying in full. Our family made a decision that you said you would correct only to be told 3 different prices for the same service. Our request never changed. We never asked for discounts or tried the haggle. We simply asked for a pavilion rental and a plaque. You then posted again the WRONG name on the plaque and not even a table for use in the pavilion. We ourselves had to mark out a live persons name and write in my deceased brothers name in front of 50 people! We had guests turn and leave at the front gate because the "party" name was not the name of my brother. When I called the office you felt it easier to call and blow up my phone during our ceremony than to quickly come bring the things wed paid for. You were put on silent. So you then try to show up 30 mins well into our memorial service with tables and water. Warm water! Keep your table! How disrespectful can you be? read more

I've been experimenting with spirit communication for several years now. The vast majority of the time, my instrumental trans-communication (ITC) sessions elicit a few relevant names, words, or phrases. For example, I might visit a cemetery, fire up an ITC app or physical "ghost box," ask for the name of a spirit present, and hear a one or two-syllable validation (e.g, "Mike" or "Janet"). These validations, though often frustratingly short and sporadic, have been relevant enough for me to continue pursuing this line of research. I also feel a stronger connection to the ethereal realm with each session. My experience yesterday afternoon at Sunset Memorial Park, a beautiful, well maintained cemetery on the Near East Side of San Antonio, was my most successful yet. I visited Sunset Memorial not only to conduct ITC but also to locate the graves of my maternal great-grandparents, both of whom passed away before I was born. When I found the graves, I introduced myself as their great-grandson, explained how to use the spirit box app (a brand new one from Keith Weldon called Sweep), and asked if they could verify their presence by saying their names. Within seconds, I heard the name "Edith," my great-grandmother's name, four times in rapid succession. Alas, further attempts to communicate with them were met with silence, so I wished them well and continued walking. As I strolled the grounds, I asked my standard question: "If you wish to communicate, can you please say your name as I approach your grave?" A few seconds later, I heard "James, James, James...Morris." I surveyed the nearby plots and was astonished to find the grave of James Morris, who had passed away in 1970. I snapped a photo of his tombstone, resumed my Sweep app, and immediately heard, "I'm Eva! Eva...here!" A few feet away was the final resting place of Eva Melton Robbins. I asked, "Eva Robbins, was it you who came through just now? If so, can you please validate that by saying your last name?" Spirits rarely cooperate for more than a few seconds, so I was amazed to hear, "Yes...Robbins." I thanked her profusely and asked permission to take a photo of her tombstone. Her reply: "Yeah...sure." I had enjoyed a huge Wagyu brunch burger at Signature earlier that day, so I was a tad gassy. I belched loudly, but before I could continue, I heard "Excuse...you." I laughed to myself, apologized for my boorishness, and wished Ms. Robbins well. By this point, I was ecstatic at having made so many connections in such a short amount of time (I estimated approximately thirty minutes had elapsed in the session), but the best was yet to come. The name "Ed Kneuper" came through moments before I approached a tombstone bearing that name. I noted the year of his passing, 1975, and felt compelled to ask an open-ended question regarding politics: "Mr. Kneuper, I see you passed away during the Ford administration. What's your opinion of politics today?" This elicited yet another validation: "Like Trump." The activity seemed to dissipate steadily at that point, but then I experienced something extremely rare in the field of ITC: a conversation between two or more spirits. Even more fascinating, the conversation appeared to be about me. I have transcribed what I captured verbatim. Spirit voice 1: Is he using...futuristic...radio? What...? Spirit voice 2: Recording. Is it recording? Spirit voice 1: Is he listening...to...us? Can he...? I was awestruck and just a little on edge. I explained that my "futuristic radio" was an iPhone running a spirit box application and that I could indeed hear their conversation. I glanced at my phone and noticed my battery was running critically low, so I thanked them for speaking and promised to visit again. What followed made me chuckle: "Runnin' low on fuel?" I'm not sure if this cemetery is more active than others or if the spirits found the Sweep application easier to use than my usual trio of apps (i.e., iOvulus, Spiritus, and Vocibus). My 16 year old son passed away in July of 2019. After the process of finding the right headstone was finalized in February this year I've come to find out that Sunset Funeral Home has only now processed the first week of Mayl!!! And it will now take another 4-6 months to get it and install it. His 18th birthday was May 22nd and his high school graduation was on May 29th, and I made travel plans to visit his resting place. Back in February, I was assured the headstone will take approximately 8-10 weeks. I kept calling periodically and was told to wait; it's coming soon. On May 20th, I called, and asked to speak to the office manager.  That's when I spoke to the office manager Mr. Martinez, who in a cruel and rude way let me know I've been duped and lied to, and the headstone was only recently ordered. No apology, no empathy, no sympathy. I immediately canceled my travel plans, disappointing my son's friends, my friends, and I have no words to describe the gut wrenching pain I felt from my broken heart. I ended up having a panic attack. The emotional toll as well as the financial toll imposed on me is reprehensible, only adding to my expenses because the headstone still isn't in place after all these months. I'm at a loss of words as to how a funeral home can be so heartless and careless given the responsibility they assume when they care for a mother and family whose only child has passed away. It's simply shameful and only adds to the sense of grief and prolongs the process of grief and closure which is a mountain to climb when you've lost your only son and best friend. This is ridiculous and needs to be assessed and fixed. Shame on them.  They're paid to help not to make things worse. Shame on you Sunset Funeral Home for costing me time, money and heartache. read more

I recently lost a person who was very dear to my heart. I called Sunset to make arrangements and Albert did an awesome job making sure I had arranged everything we wanted. Upon visiting the facility itself Brandon was very sympathetic in the loss of my loved one, and explained the whole process to me. The work he did was amazing and he made me feel that my loved one was going to well taken care of. We double, tripled, checked all the paperwork to make sure everything was correct. Brandon called me to follow-up with the the time and plan for the cremation. The whole process was very swift. I received my loved one within a couple of days and felt relieved that everything worked out as smoothly as it did. Under the circumstances I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I am so upset with this funeral home. They will get no stars from me. (Except Yelp won't let me post without giving something. Just remember my choice is ZERO stars.) My 39 year old son died unexpectedly December 28th after being in the ICU since Christmas Day. My family has an estate plot here. My dad and great aunt have already been laid to rest there. I have totally paid for my funeral and my husband and I already have our headstone installed. I have four other family members buried in other locations within the cemetery. When I called to get guidance, I was on hold for 8 minutes and listened to their recording about their respectful, loving, sympathetic, blah, blah, blah care. By the time someone answered, the organ donor people had arrived and I needed to meet with them. I gave a brief overview of the situation. She told me there were no appointments that day and she would have to get back to me. It's not like you have a lot of time to make arrangements so that was upsetting. She was cold (where was that sympathy?) and I do not remember her extending her condolences to me. She proceeded to ask me questions I did not at that time have answers for. I told her I had to go and I would answer questions when we met. She got my phone number and long story short - I am still waiting for that phone call. If we were not already committed, I would never use them and maybe we will take our headstone elsewhere! I was stunned by this entire event. We went with Porter Loring, the service is over and I am left with a very bad taste in my mouth about Sunset! Beware!! read more

After the passing of my Gram the employees at Sunset Funeral Home were great. They helped us along the way with everything that we needed and gave us peace of mind that our loved one was being given the utmost respect while in their care. Given that my family is Jewish and thus had a Jewish ceremony they accommodated very well. There were multiple plans to choose from with different coffins as well as flower arrangements and options to do obituaries and so on. An interesting note I will add is that they mentioned to order at least 10 copies of a death certificate to keep from running into problems later. I thought it was very nice for them to clue us in. I know that this is what they do, but it does seem like they went above and beyond. Quite a few of my family members have passed through the doors of this funeral home and each time they have done them justice. read more

As far as a funeral, this is a nice location. I'm sorry for your loss if you are looking into a location for your loved one as that can be difficult to face. May they Rest In Peace. The grounds here are pretty good as far a a cemetery goes. It does the job. The location is pretty convenient for most living. The caretaker do make comments on keeping floral arrangements appropriate to the time of year which I guess makes sense. If you do have a headstone for your loved one here you have to monitor for some sicko vandals who appear like to steal the drop in vases or take the chains to the vases. That's the main reason for the 3 stars vs more as there are some weird sick bodies that like to still mess with some headstones. It was nice on Mother's Day as they provided flowers in coming in to leave for loved ones. I'm hoping it's the same for Father's Day too for those who have losses their dads. Again, I'm sorry for your loss but if you do decide to go with Sunset May your loved one find rest here. read more

My mother passed away and my brother hired Sunset Funeral Home to handle the arrangements. I live in Virginia and found out about the funeral from the online obituary because my brother, Dwight, refused to let his two siblings help in the final arrangements. Despite Dwight's refusal, I personally called Sunset and did my best to stay involved. They set the meeting before I could fly into town, so I asked to be included via telephone. I sat by the phone all morning, waiting patiently to be included as Sunset originally agreed to do. But once Dwight arrived, Sunset refused to allow me to be involved. Sunset took sides. My brother arranged my mother's funeral: not hiring the minister my mother wanted, not buying flowers for her casket, and not burying her in the plot she wanted. At the grave site service at Fort Sam, Sunset approached me just minutes before the service was supposed to begin. I was the person they'd left completely out of the planning....and they asked if I had a minister or if I had arranged something for the service! I couldn't believe they'd ask me this, at the last minute, after they'd specifically refused to allow me to be involved. My brother Dwight had planned nothing! And after his meeting with Sunset, Sunset had not called me to let me know! If Sunset had only allowed me to be included, things would have been handled appropriately. Instead Sunset took sides, refused to allow me to listen in or contribute, and my mother's funeral turned into something I had to arrange while standing in the cold, at the side of my mother's casket. Thankfully I had invited a neighbor who agreed to lead us in prayer, and thankfully I had written a biography that the neighbor could read to the small group that had assembled to say goodbye to my mother. I am disappointed in how the funeral home took sides and allowed my brother to steal yet another beautiful thing from my mother. I realize they were in a delicate position, but they could have allowed my mother's other two children to give her a proper funeral instead of TAKING SIDES and allowing only her one miserable son to plan a flowerless, minister-less, music-less, obituary-less funeral. Thank God my other brother and I showed up so my mother could receive the send-off with love that Dwight could not provide or refused to provide. I am disappointed in how Sunset handled this. Sunset made a difficult situation more challenging by refusing to allow ALL of my mother's children to be involved and taking sides with only one brother, who buried my mother NOT following her wishes. The whole extended family has turned against Dwight and Sunset helped make that happen by the way they handled the funeral. read more

The funeral director was not available on the day of the service. After the final meeting, I had to ask her several times to make corrections on the announcement of my mother's death and it still went out with a typo on the funeral home address. On the day of the service, the lady that took her place had no idea of the order of service. I don't know her name. My mother's hearse driver was more helpful, even at the repast. We were asked to be at the funeral home at 9a, we were to leave to get set up before the attendees arrived. It was to be a very simple graveside service. By the time we got there there the guests were already there and waiting in their cars. We started late. My mother requested 2 songs, neither were played. You can see hinges on the coffin in the pics. The flowers didn't cover the top of the casket so no need to go to the other the side to take pics. The small details also matter. read more

Absolutely livid. My entire family is buried in this park, most recently, my mother. She was placed in crypt space that has been owned by the family since her grandfather passed in the 50s, for some reason it has take TWO MONTHS to get her name up & the pin to hang flowers. For two months we've asked, we've been promised it will be done & we have collectively spent 15 hours in the car back & forth to make sure they are doing their job. Just know if you use them, you're going to have to sit on them. Yes, you're grieving. Yep, babysitting a pack of adults will be the absolute LAST thing you want to do with your life, but if you're relative/loved one/etc is buried there - you're going to have to because things just won't get done otherwise. read more

The front desk ladies were extremely rude and inconsiderate. Showed no professionalism what so ever. We had a time slot to see my family member between 4:30pm 5:30pm. The ladies said we are not allowed to stay and see my family member. I checked the time and it was 5:02! I can not believe Sunset Funeral Home could let this happen. read more

Their customer service skills and organization of important documents need some refining, other than that - it was ok. My grandmother had a pre-arranged funeral package so everything was preset. But the day after her passing on a Sunday - their receptionist or answering service basically said they were booked til Thursday for me to see anyone... thought that was insane considering. Anyway - finally got in, handled everything, services were set. It's now Feb 2nd and I just found out today that my grandmother's headstone was set on Dec 24th. Which they were suppose to call and let me know when it was in and ready to be set. I never got that phone call. I called three times in Jan to speak with my counselor to see if the headstone was ever delivered and set. Never got a call back. I only found out today because another document that my counselor failed to give me - needed to be signed. Yes, I know I could have driven by to see her headstone status at any time - but I did not because they said they would call me and I am not one to enjoy going to cemetaries. read more

After the initial interview, we waited 1 1/2 hours only for her to return and expect us to sign a whole pile of totally blank forms. They published the obituary the day before the service, and only because of prodding them by phone. Key words were misspelled in the obituary and the sign in book. The music that was requested during the service was not being played, until once again they were prodded to play it. If you want good service and sympathy in your time of bereavement, this is not the place to go. read more
