The staff are very helpful and if you buy in bulk there is often a discount. Throughout the summer they have BBQ special packs and they do a lovely range of chicken with various glazes, to the point that I usually buy these each week. They are very yummy. You cannot fail to be aware of the shop as you walk past as they also have a section where you can buy hot meat sandwiches which are very mouth watering.

This continues inside as well with a vast array of old-style instruments and utensils that could be the props department if they ever get round to making Saw XIII: Victorian Punishment 3D. Specialising in pork, the friendly guy behind the meat counter will happily talk you through what's on offer and what to do with it. If you walk in and no one's around ring the bell, as he's probably outback chopping up stuff. It's a tad pricey but you get what you pay for. Four rashers of bacon set me back £2.20 but unlike the rubbish you get from supermarkets, it isn't plumped up with water and doesn't shrivel in the pan to size of a postage stamp. It was also delicious. Young's is a really nice, friendly shop and worth a visit if you ever pop to Llantwit for the day.

The display of fresh meat was an inspiration with the butchers able to tell us where the meat all came from - they are mainly supplied by small independent local producers and the quality is obvious. We picked up various cuts of chicken, pork, beef and lamb and let me assure you that we ate well that night. The butcher was very helpful in making suggestions. They also have a counter selling local produce like cheese and home made faggots and cured meats. I was tempted by the local cheese but eventually settled for some home made pork scratchings. We also snaffled some fresh Cornish pasties warm straight out of the oven. They were lovely and full of spicy pepper flavour. A further cupboard is full of sauces and preserves. A real foodie's paradise!

The veal is amazing. You can enter competitions from time to time when frontman Richard challenges you to predict his running times in his races. Nothing is too much trouble - they will prepare your meat how you want it and even sort out special orders if needs be for something a bit different. Try the pastrami - it is nothing like the shop bought rubbish you've had in the past!

There is a great choice and they are really helpful with advice on the different cuts etc. The behind the counter there is a big room where you can see the butchers cutting up the meat. When we where there a side of a cow was being dealt with and in this day and age where kids do not know where the meat come from I think it is great. There are big bins for the bones and we asked if we could have a few for our dog. They were more than happy to give us plenty. The farm shop is quite small and a bit limited on the veg side of things, but they have delicious cheeses, local ice cream, juices, chilli chocolate, pickles etc. We ended up buying loads of stuff that we did not really need but it all looked so good. Aune valley is a traditionally run family business. They have just started to run a online ordering and delivery service, so people outside Devon can enjoy the tasty meats and needless to say: 'the meat is delicious!'

If we don't support our local butchers, then presumably one day all our meat will come from China or maybe the moon or some sort of sci-fi factory where wood pulp goes in and meat comes out. So if you are buying meat in Braunton, the only reason not to go to Reeds might be the burgers, which seemed much better at the competition. In fact, so good were they from 'The Family Butcher' that I half expected to be offered them furtively from under the counter as a 'special' for 'local people' only. But this is Braunton, not Royston Vasey.

A huge variety of local food can be found here. Local meat (pork, chicken, beef, lamb, goat) , fish & shrimp, cheese (amazing); maple syrup, honey, seeds, squash, micro-greens, cabbages, fresh baked bread, local legumes, soap, eggs, fingerling potatoes, candy, coffee, and more. Live music too. To be expected the prices are high, but hey its local and high quality. One thing bad was that it was WAY too crowded. It was in the High School cafeteria. Could it be moved to the gym? Also by 11:00am many of the popular vendors was running out of items, like Eastmans fish (ran out of cod fish).
