I called around to a couple well-known moving companies and they were all booked with no availability. My dad gave me the number for M&J - a husband & wife business (too cute). I called them right up, spoke with Mike, and he told me he could fit me in that evening as his last move. Sa-weet! Mike and his partner had me packed up and moved into my new place in about 2 hours, including driving time. His partner was like superman, a fellow just a little taller than me, carrying every piece of furniture but my mattress and every box up 3 flights of stairs. Yeah, i was amazed. Fast, efficient, friendly, professional and so humble they wouldnt even accept my tip. I had to tell him id be upset if he didnt in order for him to finally break and take it. What was I thinking when I chose to move into my new place on the last weekend of the month? I honestly didn't think it would be an issue to find movers, but I was wrong. One hour on the phone, fifteen calls to movers and fifteen rejections, the light bulb in my head went off. I remembered reading my cousin Juv C.'s review for M&J's Moving Company. I gave M&J's a call and what do you know? They were available on my move date!! Mike was very friendly on the phone and in person and he was so easy to work with. Fast forward to moving day and Mike and his partner show up and get to work. Mike covered all the paperwork, insurance and stuff like that while his partner starting moving boxes downstairs. I felt bad because we had a bunch of smaller stuff that should have been packed into big boxes, but they didn't complain once. Door to door, the move was 5 hours and they even gave us a 15% discount on top of their already low price. When I handed Mike an envelope with a generous tip, he refused, but I told him that they earned it and they deserved it. He took the tip with a smile and thanked me generously. Selected this moving company for our move across town in April. They were responsive on the phone and with confirming the appointment, The move was long. and their two trucks packed. The movers were relatively on-time and worked from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm. At the end of the evening in the unloading, we discovered a piece of antique furniture was destroyed during the move. It was between $600-800 piece of furniture and pretty much unrepairable. When I called the moving company to discuss some type of compensation, they offered me $30 because we only signed for their basic insurance. She then explained that in my total bill I received 15% off and was given $30 in free boxes. 1 - The 15% off was a quoted price during my initial call when I mentioned I found them on Yelp. 2 - I never asked for free boxes. I asked if they had extra packing boxes and they did. I offered to pay for them and one of the movers stated, "no worries. no charge." What does #1 and #2 have to do with my broken antique furniture? Finally, after reiterating my unhappiness for another 5 minutes, I was again offered a check for $30. At that time, I informed M&J Moving Company that if it were my company and if they had a broken piece of furniture, basic insurance policy or not, I would make sure that the customer was appropriately compensated for their loss. Honestly, I never expected to get full value, but $30 was insulting. They could have paid for at least half its worth. I've seen better customer service at a Red Box Video Dispenser. My roommate and I were moving out of our apartment to a new place. My dad hit up this company because he saw the sweet offer they have here on Yelp. At first we were told that they were all booked for the day we were planning on moving out, but after some talk they squeezed us in for their last move of the day. Moving day came and 3 movers (Tom, Mike, and Greg) showed up when we were only expected 2. I got to give these guys props. They had to deal with narrow hallways, tricky stairs, and even a spiral staircase. They were pretty chill and got the job done. I definitely recommend them if you need to move. I appreciated the family-business vibe and how friendly the employees were. But that's about it. I urge you to check out the filtered reviews because I didn't, and now that I have I see that others have had similar experiences. 10 minutes before they were supposed to arrive they told me they'd be late. About 40 minutes after the scheduled appointment time they showed up but it took about another 30 to get the truck and paperwork sorted and have people actually start moving things around. I was getting pretty anxious by this point because I scheduled an early move specifically because I had plans that evening. I was told 3 movers would have to be sent (at an additional charge) because there were 3 people in the apartment (even though it was a 2 bedroom). Ok, fine. But for the majority of the time only 1 or sometimes 2 men were actually working. For about half of the move, 2 of them sat downstairs in the truck while the other (smallest guy) loaded and unloaded boxes into the elevator. The guys downstairs didn't help the 1 guy with unloading, and they let the boxes sit on the sidewalk rather than filling the truck. It got to the point where my roommates and I started moving our stuff out of the apartment and next to the elevator and even loading/unloading the elevator because it was taking FOREVER. There were no hand trucks or dollies to move multiple boxes. Once everything was downstairs, then they started filling the truck. We did not have a lot of stuff. The truck was about 1/3 full if that. The new place was a 15 minute drive for us on the freeway. After 30 minutes we called asking where they were and they said they were almost there. They hadn't mentioned taking a lunch break or anything, and actually left before we did. Took about another 15 minutes for them to actually find the place. By this point it had been about 4 hours, and I was expecting it to take 3 total. Again, one guy did the loading/unloading of the elevator, although the other 2 were unloading the truck. Once everything was off the truck we told them to leave rather than have them move boxes one at a time for another hour. When I called for the appointment I was quoted a price for 3 hours. I was unaware that it's apparently standard practice to charge for 2x the number of hours, and to double the mileage. Maybe everyone else knows this, but this was my first time hiring movers and I was shocked to learn that the moving expense was double what I had planned. My roommate -- who is passive -- paid them and didn't feel up to disputing the fact that we were charged for the time they were late in arriving and the time wasted driving to the new apartment (which I would have done). I had assumed they scheduled another move that day (since I was given the option of an early or late move) but they must not have had another because there was absolutely no urgency. I got the feeling they were dragging out the move intentionally because that was their only gig for the day, which wasn't really fair to us, who paid by the hour, and stated that we had plans in the later part of the afternoon. read more

I used M&J's moving service the weekend of 10/26. They showed up pretty much on time; it was a little difficult to locate the exact location of my apartment cause there are two identical buildings. Both Mike and Chris were very friendly and cordial. They had to do many trips back and forth to the truck because my service/passenger elevator is very tiny. That's what took the longest I think. I didn't sense any attitude issues and they willing to do anything asked. I had additional places to drop items to (storage and a house) in addition to my condo. No problem at all. They helped take apart some furnitures and did everything I asked with patience and intelligence. They meticulously organized the truck in such a way it was easy to maneuver and drop off items at their designated places. With all things considered, I'd definitely use them again in the future... but hopefully far future. I'd also recommend them. PROS: Great service from phone calls, scheduling, follow-ups, and arrivals Friendly, personable, great attitudes CONS: Price, because I had additional stops it adds to the costs. I recently used M&J's to have them move my grandma out of her 2 bedroom house to another 2 bedroom house. The reason I used them was because I saw that they offered a discount for seniors. I was pleased with how hard they worked and how efficiently they worked as a team. There were 3 movers (Mike the owner, Tommy, and Greg). The move went smoothly even though my grandma had a few huge items including an armoire. They did have to take the bedroom door off to get the armoire through but I was fine with that and they put it back on. While moving the armoire, they were careful so they would not chip the corners or knick the walls, and upon loading it in their truck, they wrapped it with 3 or 4 thick quilt like blankets to protect it. I really appreciate the care they put into their work and I would recommend them any day. They are friendly and reasonably priced, but more important to me, they are family owned. read more

DON'T USE THESE GUYS! I'm not kidding! Whoever gave them 5 stars must be their friends. I called M&J because they were in Daly City and I was moving from Pacifica and my new place is less than 10 minutes away. Also the woman on the phone said she would give me 15% off and that they moved pianos. Cool. There were 3 guys that arrived and they were late. Fine, that's alright. The rate was $120 an hour for 3 guys, 3 guys she said because of the piano. I was still going with the 3 hours minimum and maybe 1 1/2 hour more. I expect a LOT from movers. I was only planning to have them around for 4 hours only. I had used Tonka before and these guys were bad asses! I wish I used them this time. Stupid me. Anyway, there was Mike, a black guy (don't remember his name) and a guy they called Hercules. I had family and friends helping me 'coz I wanted this move to go fast and everything out of the old apartment that day. There were 11 (ELEVEN) of us plus the movers. That is a total of 13, WAY more than enough to get the job done. My family and friends worked hard. I didn't see Mike too much and the only guy I saw coming up and down the stairs really working hard was Hercules. The black guy was a no show. That irritated me. I didn't see him until I came down to the truck later. He would stand there and go up and down that lift. He was the WEAKEST WEAKEST link! BTW, they didn't use a dolly, a flatbed, they didn't wrap ANYTHING!! It took them about 30-45 minutes to get the piano down. They didn't seem to know what they were doing. By the time we told them to go it was about 12:30. 2 hours too long. With 3 guys, PLUS 11 helpers, it should have gone way faster! I still had stuff in the apartment, but I knew we had to come back to get them. So we all arrive at the new place before 1:00. They arrived about 1:30 because they said they were going to McDonald's. I told them we have pizzas, sodas and water waiting for us at my new place since my parents had bought enough food for everyone. But they wanted to go to McDonald's. Fine. At my new place, the same thing happened, Hercules was the only one going up and down the stairs bringing stuff up and the black guy was SLOWLY folding their blue blankets/padding listening to his music. Again, that annoyed me. Mike was here and there. They were so stupid that they waited until the end to do the piano. By the time they got to the piano it was about 3:15. They had to "caucus" on how to bring it up. WTF? Lift and bring it up. They are supposed to be professionals! By this time, my sister and bro-in-law and 2 nephews had to leave. I said to the black guy 'we wondered why you did the piano last' and he says to me "well, we didn't know your bro-in-law was going to leave." What??!! I'm paying YOUR sorry ass to move my stuff, Jerk! I called the woman at the office to ask her if I was being charged for the whole hour that they were standing at the bottom of the stairwell not knowing what to do?? By this time it was about 4:15 and they still couldn't figure out on how to bring my piano up the stairs. BTW, it was a studio, not a baby grand. They said it was heavy. Ok. The black guy says to me "You said it was straight going upstairs." I said "yeah, this is going up the stairs, straight." All they had to do was bring it up. In the end, my OTHER neighbor downstairs had to help them, along with my son and my two nephews to bring the piano up!! OMG! These guys are supposed to be professional movers??? My friend who was above the stairs listening to the movers talk said that Mike kept asking the black guy on what to do and Hercules (yet again) was the only one lifting and pulling his weight. So I get the bill and pay Mike, plus a small tip, very small tip 'coz by this time it was 5pm and they were around way too long and I was angry. I was so angry that I just wanted them to get out of my face! Mike comes back 'coz there is a nick on the piano (OMG) and tries to put this oil on it and which fell on the rug. Great. Later I find out he broke the wheel on my shelf and then later I find another nick on the piano. Damn!! I just wanted them out. They finally left after getting more water and sodas from the fridge. While I was downstairs putting stuff away, my sister tells me Mike called and I called him and left a voicemail 'coz he doesn't answer. When we were leaving for dinner, the black guy pulls up on my driveway, blocking us from leaving and says that Mike calculated the amount wrong and I owe them $127 more. OMFG! Are they kidding me? Because of his stupidity, I have to pay him more?? Yeah sure I will. NOT!! NEVER use these guys. You're better off using someone else. Ask other people first. I later found out a family member used them and I wish I had asked who they were and they were just as lame with them. I hate lazy asses. I'm pretty conservative normally in a sense i would ask friends and family to help me with my move and save some money. But due to the fact that I only had one day as opposed to the whole weekend I decided to look for a moving company. Mike was highly recommended by a close friend of mine, where he said "mike hooked me up". I wasn't sure what hooked up meant and how it would apply in my case but after the whole experience i understand what my friend meant. Keep in mind again i never used a moving company before, but after this experience i will definitely call them again for my next move. what would have taken a whole weekend, it took mike and his partner just 4 hours. all my furniture was set and placed without instructions, i'm not too interior design savvy but i kept my furniture in the same spots that they had arranged. My place looks nice. I was worried there might be some scratches on the furniture because the move was done in a short time frame, but there wasn't so i was happy. When it was time to take care of the bill i was somewhat nervous i was hoping there wouldn't be any unexpected charges etc... man it was 150 dollars less than agreed. Mike could have easily charged me the estimated price, but he said the move was relatively easy so it would only cost XXX. If yelp would allow me to give an extra star i would, and i am here 6 stars, 5 for the great service, one extra for the professionalism and honesty. DISASTER! 3 broken pieces of furniture and 9 hours to complete a move from a single bedroom place, with not a whole lot of stuff. 3 big guys. Distance to the new place was hardly 15 miles. The bill was well over a one grand! They weren't even honest they had me sign a paper that said the move cost would not exceed a certain amount, but when they finished off the move, they said that original paper is no longer valid and had me a sign another one that didn't have that condition. This is pure manipulation. We were so exhausted by the end of the day, I didn't look into the nuance. Although, I asked them to discount for the broken pieces of furniture, which they did by weight - which means it's not a whole lot. But still I paid close to $1000. Read through this stuff to make sure you don't do the same mistake we did hiring these guys! I read reviews here on Yelp and felt confident about a not-so-well-known company (Not that it matters whether you hire a known company or not). Out of the few companies I called, these guys were the only ones who confirmed availability right away, and so I thought what the heck. I declined others who called me back. BIG MISTAKE. When I called M & J I told them I found them on Yelp, they said they have a special package for approx $80 to have 2 guys help move. I asked them to send 3 guys because I wanted the move to be as quick as possible, as we have 2 toddlers to take care of. I insisted on this very much. The day went somewhat like this: They came in and took 20 minutes to finish the paperwork, after which they started getting things out reasonably quick for about 30 minutes. So we thought things are moving along fine, and we started doing our stuff, trusting them to move along fast. One of the guys seemed like a rookie, these guys must have included him as a last minute addition. Clearly, he didn't seem like he had a lot of experience moving, all throughout the move I have seen him trip, fall and generally lose control. One of the guys dropped a mattress from second floor balcony down expecting the rookie guy to catch, but he was looking for other guy to help him, so he didn't even bother trying. The mattress was on the floor in the courtyard! What kind of carefulness is that? For a while I didn't see anything move, so I went on to check, they were having a smoke inside the building. WRONG. (not that it matters they take a break, but it certainly wasn't being accounted for in the time they billed me!). I noticed how they were loading the stuff, it was an absolute mess. They weren't thinking how to put stuff in their truck in a manner that optimizes space, it was haphazard. As they didn't plan it well, some of the furniture had to be wiggled in. In doing so, the rookie guy, weighing about 300lbs, tripped and fell on our bed headboard, and it just gave in. Mistakes happen, but come on! They took an hour break for lunch, then they came to the new place to unload. They took their sweet time to bring one item at a time. They weren't efficiently using the trolleys or carts or anything that speeds things up. The rookie was primarily folding the blankets rather than help move anything. When I insisted, he started carrying most lightest of things. We gave up and started picking things up ourselves. After a long day, when I asked them to come finish off the paperwork as I need to go pick up my kids, they took a long 30 minutes to finish off folding the blankets which the rookie started for almost 2 hours already. This was the worst move ever. We heard horror stories about the movers/moves, however we never experienced one. Avoid them! read more

Where do I start? I move quite a bit for work; safe to say I've had mixed experiences with movers. These guys are the best! Mike and his team were extremely hard working, FAST, and professional. They made a very stressful move seem effortless for us. The price came in far less than we anticipated. Mike and crew arrived at the first of our two pickup locations exactly on time. First impression was awesome. Beautiful new truck, Friendly professional staff, and clear explanation of the process. They immediately sized up the job and started working and I mean fast! They instantly lowered my stress level. I have never in 9+ moves been so pleased with a mover. Every time I have moved something was destroyed. This is the first move where everything arrived as it was to begin with. In closing, if you don't hire these guys you are crazy. If you think they are not the best you are nuts or haven't ever had a moving company move you. I haven't the foggiest idea why they don't have a perfect 5 star rating. Note: this will sound fake but its actually REAL, I was very happy with these guys so read on) I was very concerned about hiring a moving company since I usually move myself and had heard all kinds of weird stories about Craigslist movers drinking on the job and stinking up bathrooms. This time I had much more stuff to move anyway as I am now married with a baby.....so needed movers regardless. Upon a recommendation from my mom I called Mike at M & J's Moving Co.....only a few days before we had to be out of our place. Mike was very polite and friendly on the phone and accommodated my short notice move without a hitch. When move day came, I showed Mike around...I had said that there was not that much but after packing.....it was a ton of stuff!!! He said that it was no problem and asked if I also wanted to move the piano....we had actually called a company to do that separately since it is a vintage model worth thousands of dollars....Mike said it was up to me but that they do pianos too and it could save us money...who could say no in this economy? I have to mention that everything was handled very, very professionally, Mike has a smile on his face the whole time he's talking to you and has a can- do attitude about everything....even though my wife and I are both musicians and we have really, really heavy gear....Anyway, everything was moved at a faster than human rate into the new house, damage free and with no complaints of sore backs!! We're not sure of your are supposed to tip but we did because we really felt they did a good job and the only reason i am taking the time to write this is for that reason as well. CANNOT RECOMMEND - BAD EXPERIENCE I consider myself a bit of an expert in moving as I have moved 6 times in 6 years. I knew what to expect. This move was by far, the worst. It normally takes 4.5 - 5 hrs to do the move. This time around, it took 7 hrs. It took me 8 hrs to move 80 miles away so it baffles me why it would take 7hrs to move 25 miles away. Yes, I had stairs at the old residence but I had the same amount of stairs at another residence as well, and same amount of stuff. They left the dollies at the old place so we could not use them to unload - that contributed to extra time. I was also asked if I could drive them back to retrieve them. Didn't seem right to ask the client to do that when it's not the client's error and the client had no plans to go back to the old place. Two items were broken, one damaged. I have never had anything broken in the last 6 moves. Every moving company had shrink wrapped my futon and chair. That was not done, even when I made the request. I left for 25 mins to pick up lunch for them - I was told they're half hour from being finished. When I came back, one item was moved. I saw one of them karate-kicking the other one at one point - gave an unprofessional impression, especially when it took 4.5 hrs to load up a small 2 bdrm place with no appliances. I called the company after the move and shared my experience. I also wrote a letter, asking for an adjustment on the charges, as items were broken and this move should have been 6 hrs at the most. I did not receive a reply. I honestly cannot recommend them to anyone. One of the movers even admitted that everything went wrong that day. I was later told that he was one of the owners. Well, if that's the case, wouldn't that be important to make it right for your customer? If I refer them to my clients and they get this kind of an experience, I will never hear the end of it. Do not trust this company with your move. I had a very simple job; pick up one couch and a rolled up carpet from a home in San Jose and drive it to Daly City. They simply would not give me a written price quote. The email address on their website is incorrect, their fax machines don't work, their moving form is so outdated it's funny. I have been ripped off by a moving company in the past and this company seems like they would do the same. I was given one quote...then was called back saying the job would cost even more. They say they aren't charging for fuel but charge double for driving time? Don't waste your time here. read more

I had a move last weekend from Fremont and the two guys that showed up were very personable. We already had our boxes organized and packed, so it was a quick operation to clear out a 1 bedroom apartment. They took a lunch break before moving our stuff to storage, but they did not charge us for that. (Yay!) They walked up and down stairs to move the boxes, but did not stop until they were finished. I've used them several times before for moves to different apartments. Nothing was ever damaged. read more
