At first we were reluctant, thinking how could an Italian restaurant be any good in a small town in Virginia. After all, we are of Italian-American descent -- so we know genuine Italian food and being the cook in our home -- I know how to cook Italian. My meatballs are renowned with our family and circle of friends. Not only are we of Italian descent, we are from NYC where there are the best restaurants in the world!!!! We have lived there over 60 years and have ate at the best! We entered the restaurant to see the entry King Kong sign about being the best -- better than NYC. I knew immediately that sign was spot on -- the restaurant smelled like my home growing up as a child on Sunday mornings! The aroma of the red tomato sauce carried us into our seats! (I think I was floating.) There were so many choices on the menu, it was difficult to make our choices. I decided on a plate of spaghetti with meat sauce and the chicken salad. My husband chose the raviolis and a side salad. The dinner included Italian garlic bread! The service from our server was divine: friendly, courteous and professional. The food was very good then. It was 12:30 when we walked in today. With it being lunch hour, we thought it would be very busy. We were surprised that most tables were empty. Today's food left a lot to be desired. The service was fair. One of my cousins ordered a chicken sandwich and the other ordered pasta with meatballs and a salad. I ordered a calzone. My cousin's salad came out within a reasonable amount of time, but we still had not been served our orders 30 minutes later. I checked with the waitress to see how much longer the wait would be. She said they were coming out. The hold up was the time it took to prepare the calzone. It would have been nice if she would have mentioned that when I placed the order. I would have ordered something else...but it was ok. The calzone filled the entire plate. I had ordered a small but was given a medium. I shrugged it off and thought I would just take 1/2 of it home. The taste was rather bland. The sauce that came with it had the most unusual, overpowering flavor that I had ever tasted...maybe far too much oregano. Not much of a tomato taste. When the waitress came by to ask if we wanted anything else my cousin, who had ordered the pasta and meatballs, told the waitress that she couldn't eat her meal because of the terrible flavor. The waitress replied "ok" as she gathered our plates and left. She was pleasantly surprised when the waitress returned to tell her that there would be no charge for her meal. The last time we were there, several years ago, the food my husband and I had with friends was very good. Not sure if a new owner took over, perhaps they have a new chef or it was just an off day, but lunch was a big disappointment.
