We drive through Abingdon often on our way to visit family. A lot of restaurants are closed on Sunday evening. We tried Moon Dog for a change. The pizza was very good. The crust tasted fresh and homemade. The toppings were generous and good sized, including nice fresh mushrooms. The restaurant was busy but not packed, giving a nice quiet atmosphere without feeling desolate. We'll come here again. read more

This was our first time visiting the area and we were on the hunt for some good pizza. What we got was "cheese sticks" that were just frozen bread sticks with some melted cheese on top, and a pepperoni pizza that was undercooked and doughy. The cheese also tasted "cheap." Almost plastic-y. The staff was nice and friendly, but they were more interested in talking than working. It's a pretty small place and these kids seem unaware that customers can hear every single word they say. They have the worlds tiniest TV, and it's set to ESPN so that's a plus... but it's put in an area that's impossible for more than half the restaurant to see and of course, no sound, and no subtitles. Why have it there at all? Overall, this place is a dud. You'd be better off with one of the national chains. At least they usually cook their food thoroughly. read more

I have wanted to try this place for a while! Great hand made pizza. Originally wanted a personal size, but the Medium one topping was about 2$ cheaper. I got a cheese, and chicken pizza. Nice venue. I like the glass garage doors that are probably opened to the outside when the weather is nice. There's a nice open feel to the place. It was one of the cleaner places I've been to. Or at least it seemed that way. Moon Dog is a pretty typical pizza place with typical menu items. Everything looked good, and I had a hard time deciding between a sandwich and a pizza. I ordered a small cheese pizza to go and while it hit the spot, it wasn't anything that would set the world on fire. The crust was nicely cooked, there was a nice helping of cheese -- not too much and not too little but otherwise was pretty ordinary. Moon Dog is an okay place when you're looking for decent, quick food choices. The employees are super friendly and don't rush you. That was probably the best part of all: the employees. read more

I got the Beauty (pep, Italian sausage, hamburger, bananas peppers and black olives - wife got a small onion) Portions are decent, the cheese they use is very nice, but I didn't love the sauce. It's a little pricey as well so be ready for that, and waters are bottled not on tap. Speaking of on tap they have a number of IPA's and will let you try them. "Medium" sausage pizza, yea right try a blasted large pizza. This thing was delicious on the Fat Man scale it's a 2 thumbs up would have been a "Need to loosen belt" but it didn't have the perfect crisp bottom that I like the sausage was a well balanced mixture of spice and a tangy flavor that I could not place, I love the fact that they have lemon juice in pre-measured packets for the coke ( yes the British side is showing) in short a very good meal and the fact that you can eat your meal in peace is what gave the 5th star. I'll give credit where credit is due: Moon Dog has upped their game. Ordinarily, I don't give 1 and 2 star restaurants second chances, but there are so few lunch options on my end of town that necessity dictated I revisit Moon Dog. I don't know if there's been a change in management or what, but the facility is cleaner and my order is always accurate. The service is still not what I would call "friendly", but you get your food quickly and it's usually served hot. And isn't that what you're there for anyway? I still think they're somewhat overpriced for what you get (except for specials, which are reasonable), but considering our options here in Abingdon, you could do worse. The Greek pizza was delicious and the baked ziti was pretty tasty as well we are traveling through on our way back home to Maryland and staying next door to this place so figured it was an easy dinner for the night. The counter girl, with an attitude, told us that since it was all you can drink, you have to pay for a water bottle. So bush league. The cost was not a problem it was her attitude. New restaurant that we stopped off I-81 to have lunch on a Sunday. Very clean. Nice and eager staff with an awesome selection on the menu. The pizza however was just average in spite of the cool topping selections. The crust is very bland as well as the marinara. First off I would like to say that this is not a restaurant with waitresses. But that is OK with me. You go in and order at the counter, receive a number and wait in the dining room for your food. This is a brick oven type Italian restaurant with the usual fair of pizza, subs, pasta and the like. I was pleasantly surprised with the craft beer selection that they had on hand. I had the individual five topping pizza. This was nine inches in diameter with four slices. It was delicious and very good brick oven pizza. The crust was thin and crunchy just how I like it. I will say that the individual size was smaller the most other pizza restaurants so I left feeling a little hungry. Next time I will order the next size up. Bottom line, I will go there again but probably at lunch instead of dinner. read more

I have eaten here 5 times and the pizza was really good 3 of those times, as in best pizza anywhere I've ate including New York, Chicago, Baltimore, KC, DC, and so on. the other two pies where less than expected one was bland the other could have been awesome if not for being undercooked. The staff has never been real friendly (not rude), the prices seem a little steep but tolerable when the pie is good. When they are busy we had two bad pizzas, the tables were not cleaned well if at all, and service was slow and the orders wrong. Bottom line if they are not busy I recommend the pizza, if you don't mind a staff that makes you feel like they are doing you favor by letting you eat there. This place got three stars from me on the three good pies alone! Update stopped by today service was a little slow the place was very busy. My husband and I are always trying to find non-chain options when traveling interstates. It's not always easy because small businesses often can't afford signs on the highways. We were about to settle for fast food, when we came across Moon Dog Brick Oven at lunchtime. I was pleasantly surprised with their menu choices-not just pizza. My husband ordered the "special" which was ziti, salad and drink for a reasonable price. I ordered the house salad with 1/4 Italian sub sandwich and drink. One orders at the counter, then your choice is delivered to your table. Everything was delicious, but the "side salad" was spectacular. I could have enjoyed just having that-really fresh lettuce, two kinds of olives, tomatoes, a few onion rings, cheese, banana peppers-house made dressings. A winner. Sandwich was great, too. Just what I expected. Husband loved the ziti. I just wish it had been dinner time because their draft beer choices looked great. Service was fast enough to compete with any fast food option. Nice decor, average food, terrible service. Ate here as we stopped for the night on the way back from vacation. When I saw it was a small business, I had high hopes. Walked in and the garage theme was nice. Ordering is cafe style where you order at the counter and then they bring your food. Very light crowd when we ordered and our meal took over 20 minutes to be brought out. Once it finally arrived, the food was decent. My personal pizza was good. Wife's cheesy bread was ok, if a little greasy. Kids' meals were ok, though for the price I was disappointed that the chicken "fries" were microwaved and the mac and cheese was from a box. Besides them dropping off our food, we never saw a server again. Strange service strategy as they bring you the food and bus the tables, drinks are all self serve, and food is ordered at the counter yet the receipt has a place for a tip. Extremely rude staff. I spoke to a manager in regards to planning a party there and was talked down to to as if I were an idiot. When I asked to bring a cake in (because I have been to showers there before with nice cakes, chips, and outside plates and cups) I was told absolutely not so I offered to pay any extra fees. The "manager" said you don't want to pay those fees in a very rude tone and pretty much hung up on me. I will not be doing business with these people ever again.
