This grocery store has an excellent selection if you are staying in Custer or Custer State Park. They have a large selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Everything in the store is clearly laid out. They also have a wide variety of all kinds of items as well as liquor. The service was excellent and everyone was really friendly. Our lodge has a kitchen so this place worked out so nicely to shop here and stock up. The store is very clean. When we checked out we got a receipt and a code for 10 cents off gas at their gas station next door. An all around great experience and we saved a lot of money shopping here rather than dining out. read more

We were visiting Custer, SD and needed to replenish some groceries and get gas for the car. Lynn's Dakotamart allowed us to do both. Established in 1968, Lynn's Dakotamart's grocery had a good selection of items at what we considered to be reasonable prices for a tourist area without much competition. For example, bananas at $0.89/lb and red seedless grapes at $2.49/lb. You're able to access sale prices without having a loyalty card. The store was well-organized and clean.. Staff were generally helpful. Parking was plentiful, convenient, easy to access, and free. A point off of our rating though for their self check-out machines. An attendant had to come to our station three times for our small order of only 13 items -- twice for an error message on the machine and once because we called her because an item scanned at a wrong price. We noticed that some other machines were also causing problems for other patrons and the attendant was seemingly getting frustrated. Our order of $50 earned Gas Rewards of $0.10/gallon (limit 20 gallons at discount). Gas prices were competitive with other gas stations in the area even before the credit. One small issue was that some delivery trucks were idling near the pumps so it was tight for us to leave after filling up. We would return to the grocery and the gas station. (Sept, 2024). read more

While in So. Dakota in May 2025 on my second visit in a year to determine where I might want to live in the Black Hills area when I retire next year (Spring '26), I had the occasion to shop for some groceries and sundries at two different Lynn's Dakotamart stores. The first was in Box Elder and the second in Custer. Compared to many of the much larger stores I shop in back East, the Lynn's Dakotamart stores were smaller, but that did not detract or subtract from my shopping experience. Instead, I found the compactness by comparison size of the stores to be much more beneficial for each visit because I did not have to wander all over each store's floorplan to find what I needed. I very much liked the selection in each location and had no complaints. Rather, because I was staying in Air Force Lodging at Ellsworth AFB and without cooking facilities, I lamented that I would not be able to buy any ready to cook meals or other perishables one usually included in their dinner meals. When I checked out, the cashiers in both locations noted my 82nd Airborne Division ball cap and both complimented me on the cap and thanked me for my service. Granted, that happens all the time almost everywhere these days but given that I was the only person checking out in both stores, both cashiers continued to engage me in friendly conversations that showed me that well known open friendliness of South Dakotans is not a myth but is practiced every day by people all over South Dakota. While my shopping trips in both stores was brief and did not fill a grocery basket, I made a note that when I do move to South Dakota in 2026, that Lynn's Dakotamart stores will be on my shopping lists. read more

This humble little grocery store seems to have everything you need. I can't speak to the laundromat, but we stopped in for groceries a few different times during our stay. They had everything we needed: food, fresh produce, alcohol, firewood, bug spray. They even have fresh sushi! (although I wouldn't necessarily trust sushi this far from the ocean...) My one grip about this place is that they definitely price some groceries beyond what they would be at a larger store like Target or Walmart. I know they are a small business, even if they are a chain, but it was disappointing to know I could likely get most things shipped to me for much cheaper than their prices. This is the place to go in town if you need some sundries or other provisions. I'm glad we got to experience it! read more

Dakotamart - the produce selection at this grocery store was woefully disappointing: grown far away, wrapped in plastic on styrofoam trays. There were no vegan meat analogs (ie, seitan, field roast sausages, etc). The store seemed to specialize in frozen foods - I have never seen such a crazy selection of prepared frozen foods in my life. It was like being at Costco! The candy selection was poor - pretty much all slavery chocolate by Hershey's and M&M Mars. Interestingly, the beer selection was amazing. We're talking about 100 different craft, micro and Belgian-style import beers - cold and on the shelf. They had lambics that weren't just the overly sweet variety! They had RUSSIAN beer! I was pretty surprised by this and happy to buy some nice chocolatey stout for my next two nights in camp. Not great veggies but - hey - beer - I can work with that when I'm camping, as long as I don't have to live in Custer and depend on Dakotamart for my grocery shopping! If you are vegan, you can make do with produce and such here but don't expect to find any vegan frozen meals or vegan ready-made items. read more

Cute local grocer with a surprisingly varied stock of craft beers (yay). There's something Fargo-esque (the movie, not the place) about Lynn's Dakotamart. Despite the lack of strong northern accent folks were supremely friendly and all knew one another. We accidentally parked our truck blocking access for another car in or out of the parkinglot (I blame the snow...) it may have been the news of the night in there that the out-of-towners screwed up the parking lot momentarily. Gossiped about in the nicest way possible, of course. We tried the other little grocer on the other side of Custer (the town being about 6 blocks in length) and weren't impressed. This is your standard medium sized grocery store. It actually had a much better selection and was larger than I expected for Custer. I was able to get everything we needed and they had a very nice liquor section. It was clean and well stocked with friendly checkers. If you need groceries and aren't looking for some vegan specialty item I think Lynn's will have everything you need. Prices are expensive - about 30-40% more than I pay in KC but with nowhere else to shop what do you expect? I think the prices were actually fair. 5 stars for fresh produce for my vegetarian/ fruitarian son found (unlike previous reviewer) although the checkout girl didnt know what some of it was. Lol. 3 stars for the relatively non-existent deli and bakery for the rest of us. I guess that averages 4. Stopped for provisions for picnic at Jewel Cave. It's the only place in town. My son was thrilled. We contented ourselves with prepackaged salami and turkey, and a slightly stale loaf of bread. However...nice souvenirs for a supermarket! And pretty great beer and booze selection. So, all in all, a nice find to avoid eating out again while on vacation. As a "local", I think Lynn's is a price-gouging store. They do hike their prices astronomically on all sorts of products, especially during the tourist seasons. Comparison shopping has convinced me to shop elsewhere whenever I can, even though the local chamber of commerce begs us to "shop locally." Well, I can drive a few miles to either Hill City or Hot Springs and actually pay myself for doing so with the savings I get from those trips. Personally, I encourage family, friends and tourists to find other places to do their shopping citing their gouging tactics as the reason. Since we "locals" get the shaft year-round, it's my way of paying them back for their policy of sticking it to us all. If I do shop there, it's only in emergencies and I only buy the bare necessities or shop their sale items. Caveat Emptor, everyone. read more

Limited selections, exorbitant pricing and most items with an expiration date are always at the end of their life. The hamburger is always gross; looks good on the outside and when you cut into the raw meat it's brown/gray and has an odor. I've lived in Custer for 4 months and have mentioned this to the staff 3 times now that the hamburger quality is gargabe and they still keep pumping it out. this makes the last time that i will shop at this store. this store continually has shelves signed with sales signs and the register never is updated so you pay more than is advertised on the signs. tonight the cashier was standing at her till and talking for 10 minutes to an older lady while there were customers waiting. another cashier came up and told the customers behind me that she could wait on them while i was still waiting for service. the cashier finally checked me out and wanted to put my 2 candy bars in one bag and my pail of ice cream in another bag (after this she announced that she was going on her break). i wonder if they get paid more to send their customers out with 1 bag for every item. they put chemicals(like dishwashing liquid) in with our meat and i've had to stop them from doing that (which is against fda regulations anyway). they are rude and not at all helpful and the have the attitude that we have to take what they dish out. they never have te sales items that are advertised in their flyers and if they do offer a a rain check, it expires before they get any more product in. this site won't let me rate them no stars so 1 will have to do. this store is the reason that i will travel 30 miles to hot springs to do my shopping at a store that has excellent customer service and products. read more
