This place was great! It's bigger than the protected ponds we decided to hang out at, but the waves are huge and riptides are awful. Lifeguards along the beach with the "no swimming" signs posted. It's more crowded near the protected ponds because that's really the only place to swim safely. It's large enough the crowds weren't an issue though. Snorkeling is okay here, but the water visibility goes way down because the waves are crashing on the other side of the rocks, and you're getting some of that spray on the pond side. It was nice to swim here and relax on the beach. There's a lot of driftwood too which provides a backrest, if you're lucky to score a spot by some!

Hands down probably the best Beach park and kids playground in the world with both combinations. Has a very large covered area for groups and events. Smaller covered area for public rental and reservations. 2 playgrounds next to each other. One very extensive and large playground mostly wooden and older. The other one is more modern, "smaller". Recently they added more shaded areas over parts of that playground. Lots of parking, great beach area.

Beautiful beach. The pond area is great for swimming and there are a decent amount of fish in it. We were able to swim even with higher than average swells.

This beach is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous. We stopped here a couple of times on our trip. It was December and one of the days was cloudy, so it was pretty empty on the beach. There were more people around the protected pond area. The protected area is great for swimming. They have lifeguards on duty. There are some ruins here that were cool to see. They are scared, so if you go be sure to be respectful and not climb on the rocks. I used two different bathrooms. One of them was pretty dirty and definitely needed some TLC. Overall, I would def recommended stopping here!

We really enjoy swimming at this beach every time we visit. The little swimming hole makes it's so simple To enjoy and also very safe. The beach is generally clean and has spots to put your stuff down. Quick walk from our hotel which is as a huge plus but also ample parking if your planning on driving.

Beach - at Lygate Park, Sunday, 8/3/2025

Sunday, 8/03/2025 - Went to Lygate Beach park. Address is 4470 Nalu Rd, Kapaa, HI 96746. Cool park. They had rocks to make a little ocean pool and a medium pool so kids can swim. There is also the regular beach with all the waves rushing in at you to swim too. ;) There is lots of parking, tables for parties or picnics, 2 kids playground, bathrooms, showers to rinse off, drinking fountain, bike rack, soft sand, etc. It's a really nice beach. I like it a lot. There were a lot of people here enjoying the day. Id come here again and recommend it. Check it out.

A super safe swim experience. There's a Keiki pool and young adult/adult one for those who love calm waters and of course the open ocean for the more advanced swimmers. There's some big fish and smaller ones. So it's a really great snorkel and swim experience. I'm still working on my swimming and stamina so this is excellent for me. Let me know if you check it out and like it! Enjoy And Aloha!

Beautiful place for families to swim and snorkel!! There's a smaller pool which is perfect for the kiddos it doesn't get too deep and a larger pool where the snorkeling is awesome. The rocks allow for calm water for swimming. Parking is ample enough. Would tell any family visiting Kauai to visit!

Katherine K.

The beach was pretty empty when I came to check it out, which was nice. There were some branches and whatnot scattered around the beach, but it wasn't ever in the way of anything. Nice views of the water, calmish waves, plenty of parking. Gave it 4/5 because it wasn't as memorable as other beaches I saw during my trip.

Kassandra P.

Cool beach with an area that's perfect for kids. It's blocked off by rocks far out it keeps the water from making strong waves. Would recommend for younger kids. There were also a bunch of people snorkeling and I was told there were a lot of fish so that's a plus!

Lydgate was recommended to us by a local that I ran into at our hotel beach area so we gave it a try! It was a great recommendation since she saw that I had a little one in tow. From what she shared, this cove area was manmade but it acts like a swimming pool within the ocean so you are tucked away from the majority of the ocean chaos. Please note, there's still waves within the cove area but compared to what was going on outside of the cove area, it was definitely less crazy! There's two separate coves, one is more shallow than the other, which is perfect for the little ones. This place is definitely good for snorkeling for beginners. You will see plenty of schools of fish as you walk into the water. There's plenty of space to lay out and across the street is a wood structured park and regular play structure as well. There's public restrooms but don't expect it to be fancy with a bidet or anything! Just a public restroom with a toilet and sometimes has toilet paper with plenty of ocean water or whatever's on the ground

Memorable sunrise from Lydgate Beach Park shores.

I'd like to talk about the camping aspects to Lydgate Beach Park... So yeah, you can camp out here right beside the beach waters. I booked a reservation for a site online at kauai.gov. Once on the Homepage, under the Visitors Section, the 3rd scroll down is Camping Information. Click on that... Then, there are 4 options of beaches to pick from that are spread out covering most of the island of Kauai. They are... - 'Anini Beach Park - Anahola Beach Park - Lydgate Beach Park - Salt Pond Beach Park I made my reservation for this Lydgate Beach Park 6 months in advance. So...I had my choice of any campsite I wanted. Thing was...the choices of campground sites from internet photos all appeared similarly. I just chose #14. It was $25 per night for two nights plus a $3 Non Resident Adult Fee (whatever that means) = $25 + $3....$25 + $3 = $56 total. Lydgate Beach Park is conveniently located 4.5 miles north from the downtown Lihue area. But...I'd like to point out that Lydgate Beach Park and Lydgate Camp Sites are two separate sections from each other. There's a 0.6 mile separation between the two. If you are looking to camp and plug "Lydgate Beach Park" into Google Maps, you won't find the camping area. If you put "Lydgate Camp Sites" into your navigation system, you should be good to go. This just a friendly reminder, lol. When I arrived, there were no indications or signs anywhere of the numbered campsites. It was basically just pick a site or section and start setting up your tent. No one was enforcing any sort of rule about whose site belonged to who. It was very come and go as you please. In fact, I probably didn't even have to pay the $25 per night. No one checked any sort of reservation. And...it was this type of loose policy as well when I camped out on the other side of Kauai at Anahola Beach. Pick a site first before others arrive. Oh well, for being my first visit to the island of Kauai and not knowing better, I had to make prearranged plans ensuring I had a space. And for those who may be reading this and thinking, why camp out instead of getting a hotel/motel/AirBNB? That's because of how expensive lodging was. When I checked prices, surprisingly it was $200, $250, $300 per night plus taxes + service fees, that really bumped up $$$. And this was for everywhere around Kauai. I don't know why so expensive for a summertime visit? Then you may be asking...well how did I get the gear for camping out? Once I arrived at Lihue Airport, I went straight into town where there was a Walmart. I then bought a small tent, pillows and blanket for cheap. And this was the plan all along, how could I find affordable accommodations, lol, if anyone cares :). Some extra notes... - Beside the camping area are restrooms and showers. - You can park on the grass next to your tent site. - There are BBQ pits for grilling and picnic tables spread throughout the beach. - The park is pretty big with plenty of room for campers. - You can set your tent up ahead of time since it gets dark by 7pm during summers. - One morning I got an early start on the day. Standing at the beach at 5:45am, I witnessed a memorable Hawaiian sunrise! - There's a poetic sign beside the park entrance stating.... "One Island, Many Peoples, All Kauaians". I had to take a picture of this :) In total, Lydgate Beach Park gets my camping stamp of approval. It's located right near Lihue town. Prices are cheap. Showers and restrooms are good enough. And the setting is a winning formula for people to bask among nature alongside trickling waves from the Pacific Ocean.

Kayla M.

My favorite beach on the island. The beach is kid friendly. They have an open part where you can swim and is shallow all around. I enjoyed the water and even went back a few days later with my family.

If you're a beginner snorkeler, this spot is a great place to start. We saw a bunch of fishes and crabs. There's no corals here, so you won't get a variety of life forms. There's a grassy field which is great if you want to get away from the sun and get a little shade to nap. I thinks this place is best for families with small kids since it looks very safe; there's a kiddie area and there's lifeguards. read more

This is a nice place if you have kids, there is an area for them that is well protected. Then to the south there is area for grownups to enjoy the waves. Not a great surfer so I can't speak to it. If you're a serious snorkler, Lydgate has some limited fish, but has a nice area contained by a rock wall to give a relaxed, safe experience. Parking is easy in the paved lot and there is plenty of beach and grass area to picnic or take in some sun. There are lots of kids, because of the large playground and calm swim area, but enough space that people aren't crowded up on each other. read more

I loved this beach! The most important thing is the protected beach where you can snorkel without waves and fighting a current. Also, FANTASTIC fish to see!! My husband and I snorkeled in poipu the day before but enjoyed lydgate much more. There was a wide variety of fish and these huge blue fish! Perfect for the kidlings. Not into snorkeling but want a safe place for the little ones? Still great because no waves and you can keep an eye on them all at once. Doesn't get too deep either. Also, I must be a kid at heart because I'm still afraid of sharks. Not to fear here!! They couldn't get in if they wanted to. Lots of picnic tables and beach space as well. Beach bathrooms and even a life guard!! read more

Wicked pounding surf. Wouldn't go near the water if you paid me. Beach littered with all kinds of wood and trees washed ashore. Swim area closed for restoration. Maybe on another, less windy day, or when the swim area reopens, or when the debris is removed. Parking is very easy as other reviewers mention. This was my favorite beach in Kauai. I love that it felt safe and blocked off from the current and big waves of the ocean. Nice and sandy, huge gras area, tons of shaded picnic tables, clean bathrooms. It was perfect for my family. I also appreciated that there is a small wading area for babies and little children and a much larger, separate area for big kids and adults. read more

Stopped here for a picnic our last day in Kauai. This seems like a really nice local, family friendly spot. The water seemed a bit rough for swimming (this was later afternoon) when we came, but we would definitely love to come back sometime. The beach is a little narrow and there was a lot of driftwood, but it was some of the softest sand we found our whole trip. read more

If you have kids then this beach is a must see. There is essentially a kiddie pool in the ocean. How great is that? The bigger "pool" had some fish, but not tons. If you have snorkel gear handy, take a peek, but don't go out of your way to get snorkel gear for this beach. The bathrooms were clean (for beach bathrooms). There were multiple showers for washing sand off. There were picnic tables and quite a bit of shade from trees. Very very family friendly. Across the "street" is a big park with a playground. The kiddo was tired from swimming by the time we made it to the playground so we didn't get to explore it all, but what we did see was amazing. Tons of nooks and crannies for kiddos to hide in. The park was partially shaded. In part from trees and part from play structures. This beach was something we stumbled upon and ended being a gem. read more

DO NOT FEED THE FISH! I AM READING MANY REVIEWS OF PEOPLE SAYING THAT IF YOU BRING FOOD IN THE WATER THE FISH WILL SWARM YOU. THIS IS NOT OK! IF YOU WANT TO SEE FISH THAN LEARN PROPER SNORKELING TECHNIQUES AND STAY VERY STILL AND RELAX. THE FISH WILL COME AND GO AS THEY PLEASE. Please, please, please, do not bring food into the water. Providing food that is not native to the reef can be extremely harming to the fish and to the reef. BECOME EDUCATED AND ACT RESPONSIBLY! read more

As of 4/10/12 this beach is not what it's cracked up to be. Kids snorkel area is closed due to bacteria. Beaches on both ends are ankle deep with driftwood. Avoid this beach until they clean it up. Lydgate Beach quickly became one of our favorite spots for a relaxing beach day. It's clean, calm, and not overly crowded, which made it perfect for swimming and just hanging out. The best part? There's a Rockwall that breaks the waves, creating a safe, lagoon-like area that's ideal for snorkeling--even for beginners or kids. We saw tons of tropical fish, and the water was clear and calm. It's a great beach if you want to explore underwater without worrying about strong surf. Just a heads-up: don't pick up cone snails! They're beautiful but can be dangerous since they're poisonous. If you're not into swimming, there's an awesome playground just across the parking lot. It's big, well-kept, and great for kids to burn off energy while others lounge or enjoy the beach. Overall, it's a fantastic, low-key beach with something for everyone--swimming, snorkeling, or just enjoying the breeze with a view. Highly recommend if you're looking for a family-friendly beach day in Kauai. read more

I visited Lydgate Beach Park in Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, Hawaii [4470 Nalu Rd] twice on Tuesday, 01/20/26 & Thursday, 01/22/26. One of the best highlights was how conveniently close it was, just a short walk from the Hilton Garden Inn Kauai Wailua Bay hotel. It became one of my favorite spots to visit in the morning. The scenery was absolutely beautiful, with incredible ocean views and lush vegetation. The atmosphere felt calm, peaceful, and tranquil. Listening to the ocean waves and walking along the shore in the warm water provided such a relaxing experience. There were also several roosters roaming nearby, which added a charming local island vibe. Overall, I was genuinely impressed by this beach park. I highly recommend visiting Lydgate Beach Park for a relaxing stroll, scenic views, or even a refreshing swim in the warm water. read more

I'm sitting in the Lydgate campground right now. I've watched a meth head spend 2 hours trying to move a boulder out of the way of his tent, instead of just moving the tent. A crazy person has been walking in circles all afternoon periodically digging in the garbage. There's a schitzo in the bushes shouting at nothing. A van just pulled up illegally camping and threw garbage everywhere. The view? Gorgeous. First and last time camping in Hawaii. read more

There are no lifeguards, so please use a life vest and bring a full set of snorkeling equipment. You won't be disappointed! Based on our experience this summer (2026), the best entry point is actually somewhere between the tiny beach areas where it looks like there's an easy entry. However, the water is very shallow for quite a while and there are lots of rocks, so I recommend going at least toward the middle, where there's a little more sand mixed with the big black rocks. Once you get into the water, you can bypass the rocks pretty quickly, and the water gets deep surprisingly fast. Underwater, you'll see some huge rocks covered with yellow coral/sponges, which seem to be a favorite hangout for sea turtles. I swam with three sea turtles within just one hour this morning! There's a great entrance point that's pretty smooth and easy on your feet, but the waves can be choppy. The snorkeling reminded me a lot of Two Step Beach on the Big Island because you didn't have to swim out very far to see fish. There were a ton of fish out there! There were also a couple of turtles further out, but there were quite a few people hanging out around them. Remember not to get too close to them! :) We visited this beach several times because it was right outside our condo complex. At one point we were just sunbathing and playing in the water and ended up having the whole beach to ourselves late in the afternoon! It was awesome!
