Before entering, we had to show them our Covid vaccine certificates then we were led to a long table that would accommodate our big group. Dining is al fresco so no air con, just fans. We excitedly ordered the following: - Mango shake was good - Pinapaitang Kambing - goat in bile soup. I'm not a fan of pinapaitan in the first place; but my Ilocano dad would love this. Much better with a squeeze of kalamansi. - Kamaru - mole crickets. The crickets still had some crunch to them and were cooked in a delicious garlic soy based sauce. This was everyone's favorite dish. - Betute - field frogs stuffed with minced pork and deep fried. I didn't try this. - Fried Hito (catfish) with buru (fermented rice) - loved the catfish but didn't like the buru. - Pork sisig was ok. - Leche Flan was ok - Turon with home made buko ice cream was DELISH!!!!! The wait staff were dressed as safari guides. They were knowledgeable of their menu, which made ordering easier. After we enjoyed our meal, we walked over to The Paris Cafe to take pictures in front of a replica of the Eiffel tower. The Wooden Table and Cafe BOM are also located in the same compound. Because it's so much better when you have Filipino friends and family that can cook better, plus it's way too common here. I took out a friend's daughter and circumstances led us to The Wooden Table. I was going in blind and didn't get to do any research on this place, so I wasn't expecting much. It's a unique place because it's two restaurants (The Paris City Cafe and The Wooden Table) with two different cuisines (American/Italian and Filipino respectively), two different sets of staff (different colored uniforms distinguish the two); but the restaurants are physically connected in the middle, staff move between both sides AND you can order off of either menu no matter which side you're on. Both sides are decorated in warm wood tones and rich reds. The furniture has an old style elegance to them. There's book shelves scattered throughout both restaurants, and cozy arm chairs to relax in if you're not eating a meal. The Wooden Table serves up delicious Filipino food and decadent desserts from Planet Chocolate in a romantic and elegant atmosphere. I discovered The Souq on Instagram. The beautiful furniture and rustic feel of the place were hard to pass up. I hadn't seen a lot of photos of the food before then, but the many beautiful shots of every corner were enough to draw me in. I made it my next mission when I visit up north. So I finally got the chance this weekend and arrived just in time for lunch. Though the address mentioned nothing apart from the street name, The Souq wasn't difficult to find. It had a large signage and a number of cars parked in front. Upon entering, you see this abandoned but magnificent-looking courtyard. It looked like the main hall of a warehouse romanticized with elegant wooden furniture and refurbished vintage fixtures, both industrial and old Hispanic in style. The light at the hall came from the giant double doors and glass windows. The server immediately seated us inside the air-conditioned main dining area. We were surprised how reasonably priced the dishes were. And by reasonable, I mean affordable considering the place looked really fancy with all the luxurious, huge furniture and expensive-looking interiors. We ordered the Pako Salad, Pakbet with Bagnet, Pork Binagoongan, and Sriracha Wings. Everything was great--consistently fresh-tasting vegetables across all dishes, the pork in the pakbet and biangoongan were tender and not overcooked, and everything was just uniquely flavored on their own. For the price, the servings, flavors and quality, not to mention the romantic ambiance, this was an unbelievable deal. For dessert, we were surprised to find that they offer cakes and pastries from Café Mary Grace. And why not? After dining, we roamed the grounds and found a nice little garden at the back. There were also more furniture here, and the place was the perfect venue for spontaneous photo ops (hahah!).
