I've been to Lupe's many times, but always for dinner. After looking at the pictures patrons have shared here on Yelp, I decided to try the Machaca burrito. It's so hard to find a good machaca. Last time I had a really good machaca was at the Roberto's in OB. Well now I've found something as comparable if not better, at Lupes. Oh and their salsa bar is great! The red sauce is spicy, but not so hot that it kills the flavor of the food. I think Lupes is my new favorite here in Poway. They are more reasonably priced for great tasting food than the local favorite. read more

It's not much to look at but we absolutely love Lupe's. Delicious, fresh Mexican food that really could be the best I've had in San Diego. I enjoy the tampiquena when I go. Everything is done right from the steak to the cheese enchilada as well as the rice and beans. Do your self a favor and give it a shot. It's always tough to choose between El Ranchito in PQ, El Patron in Mira Mesa, and Lupe's in Poway. They're all a bit slow but I'm not taking a star off for that. Making the food fresh takes the time it takes. And at all three, the wait is worth it. Lupe's portions are generous. An order of Menudo is enough for two of us, and it's the best I've had besides my famiy's. Ditto the caldo de res. I could eat either every day. This is the only place I'll order either and that includes sit down restaurants. Here's why I'm taking a star off. 1. The furniture is dated and uninviting. Had I not eaten here, I doubt I would have gone in. It's clean. But it's a hole in the wall with devoted customers; I love finding a good hole in the wall, and I love a place that has a loyal following. Always a good sign. 2. What a find in Poway. I ordered the #8 Huarche with Carne Asada. I've never heard of Huarache before today so I was taking a bit of a risk. Cheese, Carne Asada, Guac, Beans, Cream on top of an oblong sope ( thick and chewy like tortilla). You can't really eat it like a pizza at first. You're going to need to eat the topping with a fork until it becomes more manageable. Every bite was enjoyable. The texture of the sope complimented the toppings, especially the Carne Asada. A steal at 4.75, they also included bright Orange rice and refried beans. A filling, tasty meal on the cheap. Salsa bar was better than most. Including such items like pickled cucumber and tomato, Hot onions, cilantro. and red / green salsas. - Tall glass Coke Bottles - They accept credit card, and seem to prefer them ( they don't seem to have change). - Will recommend to friends and family. read more

This is my go to spot for Mexican in Poway! It's not a chain, it's not fancy, it's not where you'd take someone on a first date, but it's where to go if you want authentic Mexican! Matter of fact, it's where Mexican's go for Mexican in Poway. Haven't really seen too many gringos up in there! Mexican family, Mexican love, Mexican pride! It really shines through their food! Lupe's is family owned and run - I love that. It's nice to see the whole family working together. Lupe runs the front of the house and husband works the kitchen, and their children are also hard at work after school. Their food is 100% homemade using fresh ingredients! My girl is a vegetarian and they always accommodate. Here at Lupe's if she asks for nachos, they grill fresh vegetables, then load the chips with beans, guacamole, cheese, and pico (sans crema- she doesn't like sour cream). They always hook it up. During my last trip to Lupe's I was craving a fish torta (not on the menu). I asked if they could make a torta with the same ingredients they would put into the fish taco. NO PROBLEM!! They made me the best fish torta I ever had! The salsa bar is perfectly simple with 3-4 homemade salsas like chipotle, hot, and mild. You'll also find fresh limes, onions, and cilantro at the salsa bar. Don't expect to find 10 different options like Rubio's or other gringo'fied places. Hot tip: Their chicken soup and menudo is perfect for a hangover! Seriously, they have the best hangover remedies...chicken soup, caldo, or menudo! read more

Best Mexican Restaurant that I have been to since I moved to San Diego area last year. presently live in Mira Mesa area and have eaten at several Mexican Restaurants and never had great food like I had at Lupes today. I just don't understand how people brag about the places that I have been to. Food at Lupe's was above and beyond. Only Mexican Restaurant I will ever go to now. A friend recommended this place and it's a keeper. I don't care that I have to drive 10-15 miles it's well worth it. My wife and I decided to try a new place when it comes to Mexican food. We typically just go through drive thrus for the convenience but I am super happy that we made the decision to come here instead. The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food was awesome. I got the "Gran Breakfast Burrito" and my wife got the cheese enchilada plate and both were great. Been meaning to check this place out and the food was just your average taco and burrito. Maybe we ordered the wrong thing because this place was definitely busy! We got fish tacos and a carne burrito. What I will say is they are really generous with the protein! It was fully loaded and I do appreciate that. We're all about supporting small businesses, and this one is a gem! Shrimp fajitas were plump and perfectly spiced, with an abundance of veggies and fresh tortillas. The enchiladas were a standout. I asked for them to be made spicy, which usually just means they top it off with some hot salsa, but here they actually roasted chillies and mixed it in. So, so good! My daughter is a vegetarian, so her fallback is always veggie quesadillas - standard recipe everywhere with onions and bell peppers and cheese. Here they added zucchini and tomatoes as well, which was such a great treat for her. We're so happy to have found a great locals spot, and will be back soon. read more
