My children had been patients of Dr. Laun's for a few years. The only appointments they had prior…read moreto our last appointment were cleanings. During cleaning appointments it was said that parents are not allowed back into the rooms. That's understandable, nothing extravagant is happening, and nothing that can be too scary for the child. Our last appointment was a cavity fill. This is a first for our family, so of course, as a mother, I had concerns about my child being in the chair without anyone he new and was comfortable with. He was also going to have nitrous oxide for the procedure, and he has never had it before. I expressed my concern to the receptionist about wanting to be able to stay with my child, she informed me of their policy and I politely asked to speak with the doctor about it. When the assistant came to get my child, she reiterated the office policy, I again, politely said I wasn't sure that I was comfortable with it and she passed us to the doctor. When Dr. Laun came in to speak with us, she immediately said "So I understand you have a problem with our office policy" I responded politely again, explaining that I was uncomfortable with my child being back by himself for the procedure, and that I understand cleanings are one thing, but I would like to be able to at least be by the door for this. Dr. Laun then responded with "Do you want to do all of the work too?" When I said no, I would just like to be with my son, she directed me toward the receptionist to give them my email address so they can send me my kids records and we can have the transferred to a new dentist. I am not a helicopter mom, I encourage independence in my children, but I will also be there for my children when they need me. I also refuse to spend money somewhere where the doctor won't even take the time to speak with a concerned parent. I probably would have gone through with the appointment had she shown any sort of understanding, but instead she went straight to a condescending attitude. We will not be returning needless to say, and will not be recommending this doctor to anyone.

We had tried bringing her to a dentist before and she refused to open her mouth. I was nervous about taking her to the dentist again, so I chose a pediatric dental practice. At Just for Kids, every staff member is so great with kids and they know how to engage them to take their minds off being at the dentist. They have toys to keep them occupied while waiting, they let them choose a movie to watch during their appointment (screen is directly over the dental chair), and they give them prizes to reward them (my daughter left with a bracelet, unicorn ring, little plastic doll, and a balloon). She also got a sticker that said the dentist was proud of her, which she wore all day. They have the parents wait in the waiting room during the child's appointment. I was very nervous about this, but my daughter did great due to the caring staff and the way they make the kids feel comfortable. I was so relieved that my daughter finally had her first successful dentist visit and it made my day! My daughter also felt proud of herself. I'd definitely recommend this practice.

She knows how to connect with her patients and really tailors her visits to the individual kid by mentioning things she can tell they like. For example, she noticed my daughter's paw patrol shoes and started talking about paw patrol with my daughter! She eases any hesitation the kids have with her pleasant ton and personality! She has a very special way of working with kids. She is amazing. I am so fortunate to have found such a wonderful person who makes my daughter smile and laugh throughout her appointments. Dr. Lin the dentist is amazing as well! At my daughter's very first dentist visit she was really worried which Dr. Lin could sense. He left the room and came back with a special balloon for her which instantly made her feel more comfortable. He has a kind and gentle demeanor that makes kids and parents feel comfortable. Unlike other pediatric dentists offices, this office allows the parents back in the exam/cleaning room with the children which was important to me. This office is wonderful in so many ways. I have been very impressed and will recommend this office!

Another great quality is that they are very open and upfront about costs and what your insurance (or dental discount plan) will and will not cover. That takes a huge stress off trying to manage the health and finances of your family. They are very kid friendly, but also very professional. It's been 5 years now and even with all the cavities my kids have had they do not fear the dentist. From the receptionists to the dentists everyone is kind and friendly. I also love that they've never once scolded my kids for being a kid. They will ask them to stop misbehaving if I'm concentrating on the billing or speaking with the dentist, but it's never said as a way to shame the child or the parent and to me this kind of positive influence from professionals is essential.

The toys, video game consoles, and movie in the waiting room are definitely a huge part of the appeal for the kids. That said, it's really starting to feel run-down and unloved. The video game consoles are always broken or offline, the movies are too quiet to hear, and those toys have dwindled. The reception desk staff seems harried and doesn't have time to make sure the kids are excited to be there. The radio in the lobby is much louder than the movie, and the seating in the waiting room is downright gross to sit on- it's filthy. Where it used to feel clean and cared for and welcoming, now it feels shabby and broken, and that almost subliminal feeling of it not being cared for starts to translate into it feeling like a place that is uncomfortable. I do know that my kids still don't mind going to the dentist and they get good, solid care from a dentist who is well-regarded by the profession in this region. That is hugely important. But we also carefully seek out pediatric dentists that make our feel children comfortable and safe, so they don't take a fear of going to the dentist into adulthood with them. I hope that they give their physical space and waiting room some TLC so it can continue to welcome kids and help them have healthy attitudes toward their dental health.

The staff is welcoming and patient, the office is clean, and scheduling is easy. The exam room has a TV on the ceiling so kiddos are distracted while dental work is being done. Kids also get a token to use for a prize once the exam is complete. Standard cleanings have gone really well. Recently, my daughter fell off of her bike and landed on her face. Everything seemed fine until two weeks later when one of her front teeth started turning gray. We called the office and were reassured that all should be fine, teeth bruise, and as long as long as she is not in pain and her gum looks ok we can wait until her next exam which was only a week and a half away. I felt so much better. I cannot imagine a better pediatric dental experience!

Everything about the office is super exciting and inviting -- especially for a two year old! I don't think he felt an ounce of fear. The dental hygienist did a great job showing him the tools and being so patient with him. It warmed my heart to see how much they truly care about the kids. They have tvs on the screen, which I think makes for the perfect distraction. He flossed, got a cleaning, and then our dentist, Dr Shah, came in and looked over his teeth and gave us some tips/tricks for brushing with a two year old. She is great and we feel like our little guy is in the best hands!
