When you pull up to this house, there is a neighborhood that is built around it. Everything preserved though that is on the property, so no need to worry. Sadly, it was raining when we went, but we still were able to have a great experience. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and went quite in depth for each part of the house. I think the tour was about an hour or so. These types of houses are very interesting because while you are being told about how the room was built, how it was used or something else related to Frank or the house, you can truly picture yourself as a member of the family that lived in the house. Point Place Lighthouse sits oddly out of place in Toledo's Bay View Park where the Maumee empties…read moreinto Lake Eerie when not spilling over its banks. in addition to the small lot street parking is permitted along the near side during normal birding hours. the light house is located at the site of a former amusements district featuring a casino, thrill rides, a broadwalk, and live theatre full up with singers and dancers and assorted funny business. as is often the case fire spelled trouble for the area; consuming the original pier in 1901 and its replacement in 1910 leaving a reedy marsh most of the park area was intentionally left blank and kept that way in order to encourage and support birders and birding in a more natural habitat which isn't such a bad thing.

It is on a small bit of land that overlooks the Maumee River. There is a small parking lot adjacent and a bike and walking path that will lead you to the lighthouse. It is between the Bay View and Detwiler golf courses and if someone is still missing their Callaway golf ball, it's in the parking lot. The outside of the lighthouse is fully accessible but it is not used for navigation and the interior is closed. It is a plain white building and nice to look out but non-functioning so three stars. Me, I thought it was pretty meh. My brother-in-law said his daughters were pretty salty about a former ice rink getting turned into the museum here and from the vast amount of empty space on one side you can tell they were light on material and/or budget. The model of the fort was probably my favorite part but that only takes five or ten minutes tops. There is a number of very mediocre nature murals and models of period dwellings sometimes with cheap mannequins hanging out. It doesn't take long for a walkthrough. This place isn't exactly Greenfield Village. My brother-in-law got the attendants to give us a special screening of a short documentary made about the big battle of the War of 1812 that took place here. It was decent and this outing would have felt really underwhelming without it. I don't know what the usual schedule and criteria for screenings is. Not much of a national park as evidenced by the modest gift shop selling merchandise for larger and more well known national parks. The field itself is just that, a big ol field without so much as a hiking trail with historical markers. I'm glad we were able to pair this with the Michigan Museum of Horror for our Monroe expedition as I don't know if either, this especially, was worth the trip alone.

Visited years ago before they redid the Visitor Center- WOW- What a difference, they really outdid…read morethemselves with the displays, and the size of the museum. It is definitely a good place to take the Family on a hot or rainy day. It has a lot of space full of well done exhibits. We especially loved it as it ties in with our recent visit to Voyageurs National Park.

I have always loved ships. I've toured a handful of historic ships over the years. U.S.S…read more Constitution? Check. WWII submarine? Check. Mid-19th-century schooner? Check. Early 20th-century Great Lakes freighter? Hmm... So perhaps this ship does not have the romanticism or historical significance of the others. It is an impressive sight, quite long and stolid. In operation from 1911 to 1980, it was the largest freighter in the world when launched and set some cargo records during its first few years before being eclipsed by ever-advancing technology. It was also well known for luxury which supposedly rivalled the famous trans-Atlantic liners. Up to the modern day it is recognized as a relic of the so-called Golden Age of Great Lakes shipping, but although I respected its achievements, I couldn't quite conjure up the reverence and awe that it seemed to be asking for. Obviously the ship has seen better days, but it could be spiffier. Many spots need a buff with Rust-Away and a new paint job. In any case, this would be a fun place to take the kids, and frankly it's one of the few things worth doing or seeing in Toledo.

There is a series of non-stop videos on the Great Lakes, maps, history, gift shop, etc. Everything is labeled and explained. The second part is the ship - Colonel James M. Schoonmaker. Both are self-guided tours. The indoor museum will take you about an hour if you read everything and see some of the videos. The ship, however, will take you at least an hour plus depending on how depth you want to know about the ship. The ship has two levels; bottom level is where the engines and storage are located. The top level is the deck that leads you to their living quarters. The living quarters is two stories with no elevators. The bottom level is accessible only by a steep, narrow iron ladder.

To my surprise, my teens enjoyed walking around the grounds as well as the "wheel of fate". I enjoyed the scenic views while capturing the joy our visit to Fort Meigs brought my family. This statue of American General James B. Steedman stands in Toledo's Jamie Farr Park, near the…read moresouth end. Steedman raised the 14th Ohio Infantry Regiment for the US Army in 1861 and was elected colonel. He served quite honorably and successfully, eventually being promoted to the rank of major general after several successful battles. Interestingly, he is not a West Point graduate. He continued to serve in the army after the end of the Civil War, eventually resigning in 1866 and returning to Toledo. In May 1883, he was appointed the Chief of Police in Toldeo. He is laid to rest here in Toledo in Woodlawn Cemetery https://www.yelp.com/biz/historic-woodlawn-cemetery-assn-toledo. There aren't walking paths along it, so this isn't a walking bridge. And the drive over it is over in a flash. But it's tall, sweeping glass body is a good bit of engineering in this industrial Midwestern town.
