With over 500 years of history on display from Henry VIII's Tudor Palace to Wren's Royal Hospital for Seamen and the Royal Naval College Discover Greenwich has fascinating permanent and temporary exhibitions. For the kids (and the kids at heart), there are plenty of hands-on activities. Trying on a knight's helmet is a sure fire way to keep the little ones (and dorks such as yours truly) engaged for at least a little while. For architecture fiends and history lovers there are all sorts of geek-out worthy artefacts, models and resources. It's beautiful, it's FREE and it's fun. Plus, there's quality beer!

As we passed through an area known as the "Garden of England" she remarked that "It all just looks gray, and this may be hard to believe but, yes, some people think this is actually a garden". At the castle stop, she told us all that we could use the restroom if we needed before going on the tour of the tunnels, but because our group was large, we created a bit of a line. I was near the end of the group and when I got to the tunnel door, she told me that I couldn't go into the tunnels because I was late. The castle guide working the tunnel tour then told me I could go in. I mentioned that there were still people in the bathroom who wanted to go on the tour and our guide told me that they would not be able to because they were late- even though she was the one who told us to use the restroom first. Three hours at the castle was a bit long for me so I got back on the bus a little early and found our guide who told me she was "trying to sleep". Two women were late coming back from the castle and she left them there. When someone on the bus asked if they were okay, she told us a long story over the PA about another time some tourists were late and painted them in a very unflattering light. Because the two women that she left were late, we only had 1/2 hour at the cliffs, which was just enough time to walk from the bus to the trailhead and back. I signed up for this tour because I wanted to see the cliffs and did not have enough time to walk the trail at all. We then went back to pick up the women that our guide had left at the castle. They were literally standing by the side of the road. When we got to Canterbury, she said "Some of you signed up for the Cathedral tour. You know who you are" but when we told her that none of us knew if we had signed up or not, she looked put out that she had go through her list to tell us. To add insult to injury, she told the two women that she had left at the castle that they had not signed up for the Cathedral visit. When they insisted that they had paid for one, she told them that it was no problem, they could just purchase another ticket at the door. We only saw our guide between stops- Once we got to a stop and she walked us to the location, she disappeared each time. Then, on the way home, she announced that she was going to walk the rows of the bus "to get to know us better" in what really felt like a gratuitous move to get tips, which she did ask for at the end. Since there was no designated time to eat during the whole day, I grabbed a sandwich in Canterbury and threw it in my backpack, thinking I could eat it on the way back. When I asked the guide if it was okay to eat on the bus, she said "A small snack is okay, but sometimes people try to eat things like hamburgers and it is so awful. They smell up the whole bus. It's awful", so I didn't dare take it out of my bag. When I got back, I ate my sandwich at home at 8:00 and looked online to see how to go back to see the cliffs on my own using trains and an Uber. I really want to go see them, but not with Anderson tours. To add insult to injury, when I contacted the company to let them know about all of this and to ask if it could be somehow resolved, they told me that my dissatisfaction was due was a "culture clash" and chalked it up to stress over a personal issue that I am dealing with at the moment. I am appalled at the lack of professionalism and total disregard for my feedback.

So we splurged and I thought that was what we purchased. While every email/text I got from them said "Stonehenge" I had in fact booked only Windsor. HORRIBLY disappointing and it felt like a bait and switch! We tried to make the best of it and went on the Windsor Tour, but what a waste of money. The guide, while very nice, didn't come in with us and really gave his opinion on current popular rather than historical information. So, if you want to go to Stonehenge, beware! You might not get what you're thinking you bought. The guide said others had the same issue. And if you want to go to Windsor Castle, take the train, listen to the free castle audio guide because their guide doesn't even come in with you, and save yourself possibly 100 USD/74.02 GBP.

We didn't manage to walk around the full circumference of the reservoir, we retreated to the visitor centre where we sat on the outside decking area and had lunch while taking in the view over the water. As it was a beautiful sunny day it made the experience very enjoyable.

This fascinating little museum is a great day out trip from central London. There's also an aquarium, a butterfly house, and an extra exhibit (currently Lego sculptures) that you can pay to visit. The museum grounds are a great place to walk around. There are some really stunning views of the city center, plus a small farm, and lots of walking trails. This place was absolutely teeming with children, so it would be a great place to bring your little ones to run around. The grounds seem like a perfect place for a picnic - bring your own food or pick up something from the museum cafe.

The Ashdown Forest Visitor Centre is located just outside Wych Cross. It has a small museum about…read morethe Forest and also an area for temporary displays. When I visited there was a display of the Forest at war from the Bronze Age up to the First World War. There is a small shop selling books and small gifts, and a large collection of leaflets and maps. Several of these give details of walks around the area. There is also an Education area, which is presumably for groups of school children and the like. There are also boards detail what the Rangers are currently doing, where the sheep are grazing and what birds can be seen. Also, and most important, there are clean tiolets! As there are no other public ones in the Forest, I suggest you make a note of their location! There are several car parks within a ten minute drive from here where you can explore the Forest at will, but I would suggest coming here first. And watch out for the deer - on the ten minute drive from here to Hartfield I must have seen a dozen cross the road in front of me. Only problem was the camera was in the boot of the car - so keep yours handy if you want to get some pictures.

It's a glamorous outlet - deceptively spacious - unlike any travel agents that I've ever come across previously. Even more extraordinary, given the current economic climate. On entering, you'll see a huge world map, on one side of the wall, stickered with comments from happy travellers. To the other side, there's a comfy and inviting sofa with a plasma screen behind it. Take a seat and you'll be offered a drink, as you contemplate and ponder your next trip. There are only around six staff - with booking screens - in spite of the impressive size of the premises. It's set-up to enthuse and inspire the traveller, with space to dream and inform yourself. On my recent visit I had a lengthy chat and explored some ideas, confirming that one of my dream destinations will realise itself on my agendaone day. I wasn't made to feel pressurised, or ill-at-ease, although I didn't make a booking there and then. Instead, I was encouraged to return and experience one of their special evening events (I haven't had the chance to yet). During 'normal' office hours, it's a 'pure' travel agents (albeit luxurious and super client-friendly) but venture here in the evening and you might find it transformed into an exotic destination, featuring themed dancing and festivities. It quite turns the trend for isolated exploration, from the 'comfort' of your lonely keyboard, on its head and re-inspires enthusiasm for the expertise and input of a real travel specialist. I'll definitely consider returning when I'm ready to book, or if I'm close to the area and fancy a quick 'escape', or some enticing inspiration.
