They produce both pinot gris and pinot noir, as well as a rose from their pinot noir. From the perspective of the wine, what made this tasting so unique compared to other vineyards and tasting rooms we visited was that it was a vertical tasting. They poured samples of their 2011-2015 vintages of pinot noir alongside a few reserve vintages of pinot noir, their rose, and two vintages of their pinot gris. The wine was great and with so many vintages, it was fun to taste the differences and pick a favorite or two. They are only open to the public three times a year due to their small size and local regulations. That's unfortunate because this is some of the best wine we had on the trip. Other than their three open houses (Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, and the weekend before Thanksgiving), they offer private tours/tastings. I believe the current cost is $80 for up to ten people, which is well worth it in my opinion. They also sell their wine through their website.

You can predict what they'll order off a menu, things that make your love go off the reservation and most importantly the little things that make them happy. You also get to indulge in a fair amount of gentle teasing and mockery. My husband is Mr. Outdoorsman and I'm more of a city girl. So when we have those open ended conversations about our 'dream home' he tends to visualize a large plot of land in the country and I'm leaning towards a condo in the city. As we were driving through the picturesque wine country, part of me was enjoying the view, but the other part was afraid he was going to start pulling house flyers. It is beautiful, but I need lots of people, restaurants, museums and close proximity to an airport. I was introduced to the pinot noirs of this small vineyard almost ten years ago and it was love at first sip. They are not mass produced or marketed, so I will go months without seeing their label in restaurants or grocery stores. They are 100% estate bottled, so all grapes come from their 51 acres. After meeting the owner at the Bite of Portland this summer, visiting their vineyard went to the top of my wine country wish list. But first we visited St. Innocent just up the road. Imagine a modern French chateau with chandeliers and million dollar views with a tasting room that has probably appeared on the pages of Sunset Magazine. Then we visited Witness Tree, and I mean no disrespect, but the tasting room looks like a converted double-wide. My husband started tittering as we drove up. He loves to tease me about living in a trailer out in the middle of nowhere. This place is the perfect example of putting all your love and resources into the product rather than being overly concerned about appearances. The tasting room is perfectly fine, but the staff is amazing. Of all the wineries we visited, this was by far the best experience. It didn't feel like a rote explanation as she introduced each wine in the flight. The wine is stellar and so we left with several bottles and membership to their wine club. And the property is beautiful so I just might have to reconsider the whole city/condo thing. Score one for the country mouse.

Beyond the name being that of one of my favourite literary characters of all time, the wine lives up to the solid, consistent, trustworthy demeanor of the namesake from To Kill a Mockingbird.... I think most of the grapes are from Yamhill Springs and Hawk's View Vineyard - they released only a couple hundred cases of each, with the reserve wine being a little darker. For a pinot it is somewhat refreshing, because it isn't unecessarily over the top or huge, attempting to compensate for lack of depth. Because of that both the earth and floral are subtle, and the oak isn't too penetrating. Anyhoo... small, small, small family winery, with extremely limited production. Like... teeny. The wines were a little different than most of the tasting rooms that I frequent nearby; there was local Oregon Wines as well as New Zealand wines. To be honest, I don't believe anyone in our group was a big fan of the NZ wines, but it was fun to taste something a 'lil different. Especially, since in Oregon we are known for our Pinot Noirs, so there tends to be a lot of pinot noir specific flights, so it was nice to have something a 'lil different. Also, that day we were lucky to have Herb pour our wines for us, he was a delight to talk to about Southern Oregon (we were both from there) as well as about the wine industry in general.

We were the only two tasters inside at first so we were able to chat with the wine pourer/proprietor and learn all sorts of interesting stuff, such as how the Oregon climate is perfect for Pinot Noir (and how the more extreme fluctuations in weather from year to year make for interesting side-by-side tastings) and what makes the Oregon climate similar to and different from the New Zealand climate (also where Pinot grapes are grown and at the same latitude south as Oregon is north). Because Barrel Fence also grows grapes and imports wines from New Zealand, my mom was able to reminisce on her trip there a few years ago. The friendly proprietor also made some great recommendations of other wineries to visit - both the big guys, and those that were off the beaten path. The visit truly was the catalyst that sort of turned our beer drinking trip into a wine drinking trip. Oh and the wines? Delicious! I'm no Pinot expert, but these seemed much more tannic and fruit forward than their California counterparts (or maybe I've just been drinking cheap, watered down Pinot). About standard prices for Oregon Pinot ($35-$50ish) and they sell their New Zealand wines as well. During all of our other winery visits, we were constantly comparing the wines to those we tried at Barrel Fence and were somewhat disappointed (except for Erath, where I bought I bottle I will probably just stare at and never drink, as I don't want the magic to end). If you find yourself in this part of Dundee and are lured to Winderlea for their smart, green-looking architecture (like I was) don't miss out on Barrel Fence on the other side of the street!
