a row of barrels in a wine cellar
Matt M.

Eyrie's winery and tasting room are still located in a quaint little part of downtown Mcminnville. It's away from the vineyards, but a must visit. The founder, David Lett, was the first to plant Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris (PG also first in the US) in the Willamette Valley. And they're been at the forefront of Oregon wine ever since. Jacques was our host, and was very knowledgeable and friendly. He talked to us not only about Eyrie's wines, but also about the other places we had visited that day. Truly an ambassador for the area. The wines were great overall. I liked the Pinot Gris- nice fruit and a pleasant spiciness. The Chardonnay was a similar profile but with added richness and depth. The Pinot Noir was excellent- my favorite being the 2006 Reserve Estate Pinot- very musky with great fruit and a profound earthy depth. They had wines across several price points- offering a little something for everyone. I found the 2007 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir to be a particular bargain- $27 for a wine that holds its own at twice the price. A great time- recommended.

If in McMinnville, you have to stop at the winery that helped put Oregon on the wine map. In 1965, David Lett started his first estate vineyard. He was the first to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley, and "New World" Pinot gris. Overtime, one vineyard became five estate vineyards all situated on the south-facing slopes in the Dundee Hills area. Today, David's son Jason continues the Lett family legacy at The Eyrie Vineyards. I first fell in love with The Eyrie's wine at a wine bar in Charleston, SC. I had never heard of Chardonnay from Oregon, and had the opportunity to try it there. Since then I started to plan my trip to the Willamette area. For a winery with such history and accolades the tasting room and production facility is unassuming. I probably would have walked right by it. The winemaker at another winery pointed us in the direction of Eyrie, and mentioned it was in a building that used to be a chicken processing plant (or something like that). There is nothing fancy or showy about the tasting room here, the wine is enough to speak for itself. The tasting room associates were incredibly friendly and highly knowledgeable. You can pay $10 for a discovery flight of 4 wines, or $20 for an exploration flight of 7 which includes 2 limited production releases and one library vintage. The $20 option is definitely worth it. The winery has done an amazing job of maintaining an extensive collection of library wines from the past several decades that they are able to provide visitors with a taste of Oregon's wine history. I have never before tasted wine that was so old - vintages from 1992 and 1986! Also, wine that was created from grapes that grew on the original vines planted back in 1965. The tasting menu has diverse options of varietals to select - a nice break from all the Pinot Noir. They even have a wine made from the Chesselas grape which is rare to find in the US. It was made with the perfect acidity to pair well with food and cheese. It took me back to memories of many amazing meals I had in Switzerland with a bottle of Chisels. Everything I had here was extremely well structured and rounded. I enjoyed everything I tasted. The wines hold up to aging well. We tasted a 2014 Chardonnay vs a 1992 Chardonnay and the difference was amazing. The 1992 was delicious, silky smooth and creamy goodness. I even had the opportunity to meet Jason Lett himself who was incredibly kind, fun, and down to earth.

There are so many different wineries around the Willamette Valley, so it's difficult to choose where to go. And of course, the most popular ones will likely be booked up. But my partner found Coeur de Terre and made a reservation for us to visit this winery in the late afternoon, which ended up being a delightful experience. The vineyard is located far from the city, up on a hill, surrounded by other vineyards and orchards. Just the setting itself is worth visiting. The winery with its own vineyard is spacious, with a large, open building that's open for the public. However, where you want to sit is outside on the patio, which overlooks the hills and vineyard. We had a reservation for 4PM on a Sunday, which was the last hour before closing. We tried six different wines: a chardonnay, pinot gris, rose, syrah and two pinot noirs. Now, we came to Oregon wine country because we wanted to explore pinot noirs, which is king in this part of the country. And I can say that the pinot noirs at Coeur de Terre were solid. I normally would not choose a pinot noir, but Coeur de Terre made me a believer. They grow all of their grapes here at the vineyard, and what I liked most about the pinot noirs is that they were more robust than other pinot noirs I've had. I like my reds more bold and heavy, and these pinot noirs were heavier. We had a wonderful experience here, exploring the pinot noirs and taking in the views and setting. The employee who helped us out was friendly, too. I recommend visiting if you're in the area. Tasting is $25 per person, and is waived with a $75 bottle purchase per person.

I did the red tasting flight which consisted of 3 pinot noirs, a merlot, and a tempranillo. Oregon is known for its pinot noir and those were the wines I thought were best. She really made the tasting experience both fun and educational. The relaxed atmosphere of this place was perfect for sipping wine. Tonight we stopped in to grab a bottle of the Grenache from the Maison Bleu label. Back to the tasting room... The vibe is chill and there's enough room in here for a few different sized parties. They have some great wine! And cool trinkets, oils and such. If you are in the area, please stop in, say hello and try the Grenache! You'll not be disappointed.

The tasting area is a section of the winery itself, so you'll see winemakers coming and going, doing their thing, which adds to the whole ambience. Erich with Ricochet and his team have really done an awesome job setting up a fun, warm, relaxing spot for wine tasting. There are picnic tables, cozy little chairs and tables for two, larger tables for groups, and seating at the bar. There's also heaters around which keeps it warm (because wineries can get chilly!). What I really love is that you can not only taste Ricochet wines here, but also wines from their winery partners who also make wine at that location. I think there were 7 other wineries at the time, but that number changes. Tasting flights are $25/person (waived if you are a club member), and you can choose from either an all Ricochet wine flight or the Ricochet et al wine flight, which includes wines from other wineries. We did the et al flight and it was so fun to taste the differences in winemaking styles. So many great winemakers making delicious wines in one spot! You can also book a tour and tasting for $65/person. Definitely make a reservation for that in advance, although they do take walk-ins for the regular tastings. Our forever favorite is the Ricochet Tempranillo, made with grapes from the Les Collines Vineyard in Walla Walla. It's my favorite vineyard; every wine I've ever had from that vineyard has been amazing. Zane who is also the winemaker of Ze Wines was the one guiding us through our tasting, and Zane is always so knowledgeable and makes wine tasting FUN. The winery is located about 45 minutes to an hour from Portland, depending on where you start. I suggest making a day of it and enjoying lunch or dinner in one of McMinnville's great restaurants (Humble Spirit is a fave!). There's plenty of parking in the winery's parking lot. Definitely add this spot to your wine tasting itinerary! Take it from someone who goes wine tasting a lot: this is an incredible opportunity to taste incredible, unique wines (not just Pinot Noir!) from a lot of different wineries in one spot. We will most definitely be back!!
