When planning this trip here to the Scottish Highlands my mind clicked immediately into Haggis / Scotch Whiskey mode.
Well, in the three days I've been here I've certainly had the Scotch but have yet to have eaten my Haggis.
I thought last night was going to be the night. Imagine my disappointment when my host here in Scotland informed me we were having dinner at a place called Luigis. Sounds like a "No Haggis" place to me. Sounds like a caesar salad and veal parmigian dinner tonight. Well that's not to shabby either as I can always eat Italian.
Well, now, imagine my suprise when I walk in the front door of Luigis and didn't smell a lick of garlic - Uh Oh! What's going on here?
What was going on here was a menu so packed with wonderful sounding dishes I didn't know where to start. This small, pristine restaurant which bills itself as an Ice Cream and Frozen Yogart place is actually a very high end gourmet restaurant making some really beautiful and serious food.
I settled on a calimari salad starter and then ordered a linguini with scallops, shrimp and red chorizo entree. Wow, were these delicious. My friend ordered a lamb chump with vegetables and potatoes. He was also a happy camper.
The owner, a very nice, connecting, humorous man picked us a lovely red wine that paired beautifully with our dinners.
We ended this eating gala with a very yummy carmel ice cream with a walnut crisp pie. This was a show stealer. It was a smart dessert that totally worked.
On a complete side note but one I must mention for no other reason than it stunned me was on my visit to the men's room they had the best smelling hand soap I've ever encountered.
Their staff was well trained, professional and charming. The prices are extremely reasonable for what you are getting (in New York City think double) and I will definitely come back here before I leave for home.
But for now, I gotta find some Haggis!!!!!!! read more
