Dr Boors made charts and had no issue sitting with me and trying to talk my anxiety away with facts despite him being very busy. Danielle made sure I had the necessary records read. My experience at Maui Medical in Wailuku was very stressful and disappointing…read more I arrived for my scheduled appointment already feeling sick. All I wanted to do was check in, see my doctor, and get on with my day. Instead, I was told I had to speak with the billing department first about a previous bill and was told the bill would be sent to collections. When you make a medical appointment, you expect to check in and receive care, not be put under pressure to make a financial decision before you can move forward. I also have work responsibilities, and I do not have extra time to deal with unexpected billing issues when I arrive for a scheduled appointment. This experience made me feel as though I was being put in a trap. When you are already sick, being confronted with billing pressure can create anxiety, frustration, and even fear about going back to the doctor. It makes an already difficult situation even harder. I understand that bills need to be addressed, but patients deserve respectful communication, compassion, and a clear explanation of their options. Billing concerns should be handled professionally without making patients feel intimidated or discouraged from seeking medical care. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves how billing issues are handled. Patients should be able to arrive for an appointment and focus on their health without worrying about an upsetting confrontation before they even see their doctor.

"There are no doctors left here [in Maui] , you just have to PRAY"…read more Dr. Luz Medina, my newely assigned PCP in April/May of 2021, when I presented with a melon-sized knee in agony, wearing only a store-bought elastic knee brace, did NOT order an ortho consult or an MRI - and in fact, on 3 separate occasions made the above statement. I asked for nothing but an ortho consult. After I repeatedly requested help for my knee and expressed my incredulity at the absence of an ortho consult from her, with marked irritation, she did offer to "Do what she was good at", a pelvic exam. I should have run (hobbled) out of her exam room. Pelvic exam from a defensive angry doctor that opted to forgoe lubrication for the speculum -that's ASSAULT. When I finally got to a Dr. that would practice medicine properly, an MRI (fully covered by my insurance) revealed that I had a torn ACL. Dr. Luz Medina is dangerous to patients, and certainly has completely forgotten her hippocratic Oath: First, do no harm. Also, its illegal to treat with religion, medical care is secular and patients rights are protected from religious bigotry. I did NOT ask her if I should pray. Perhaps now would be a good time for her to pray about her career.

The providers there are incredibly caring, warm and I never felt rushed at my appointments. I highly recommend Dr Casey and Heather Milovina - they are both incredible, so competent and skilled and kind. Out of the 6 providers, I felt totally comfortable with 5 out of 6 of them - which is pretty great! I gave birth a few weeks ago and had a very positive experience thanks to the wonderful people at Malama. Dr Casey was my doctor who delivered my baby, and I felt 100% confident and comfortable with him, knowing I was in great hands. Heather was there the next day, which was great, because I was seeing her the most during my prenatal visits (she is an incredible midwife), and she has a wonderful presence about her - she cares so much about her patients, and you feel completely comfortable in her care. I would highly recommend Malama if you are pregnant, I think they are the best on the island as far as prenatal care and caring about women's birth experiences.
