Together we decided to try physio for 6 weeks to see if we could strengthen the area, then we can take the next step of steroid injections if needed. He was a great listener and was very gentle when rotating my leg/hip. When I mentioned I had lower back problems he immediately referred me to a back specialist to see if that was affecting my hip pain too. Dr Eno has an excellent background and experience with professional sports teams and we are very lucky he has returned to Maui to practice. While I only have a mild hip problem I wouldn't hesitate recommending MOI for anyone with hip, knee, or shoulder problems. The number of patients who were arriving for surgical check ups attest to the amount of surgeries both Drs carry out. If I have any further problems they will be my go to orthopedic Drs.

I…read morefound Dr. Yu to be one of the most experienced surgeons in Hawaii and scheduled my consultation. It was such a great experience from the moment I walked in the door. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful! Dr. Yu was very informative and easy to talk to. All of my questions were answered and he also showed me pictures so I knew what to expect. Dr. Yu also explained the risks involved with this type of procedure, which was important to hear beforehand because there is always a risk when you have surgery. My surgery went well and I was very happy with the result! Dr. Yu and his team are amazing. They were very attentive throughout the whole process and I always felt very cared for when I went in for my post op visits. It was also really nice having the procedure done in a private facility. Unfortunately, I did end up having complications. :-( I had bladder retention and ended up in the hospital for a week. I had a longer recovery period than most because I was so sick. This is a complication that can happen after any type of surgery with general anesthesia and it was miserable, but I knew going into surgery there are always risks. I would choose Dr. Yu again if I were to have any other elective surgery done, as I have the utmost respect and confidence in him!!!

I consulted with Dr Yu regarding my ab…read moremuscles had separated which is called "Diastasis Recti" and an abdominal hernia which was causing distention. My research showed this correction is usually done by a Plastic Surgeon. I saw Dr. Yu and he informed me he had preformed this surgery many times and was confident he would be able to take on my care. Mind you I had insurance and could have seen another surgeon but I had great confidence in Dr. Yu and a great deal of concern knowing this is a cut hip to hip incision, the scaring etc. I opted to pay over 13K for his personal care. I came out of surgery and it was the worst. I could not take 2 steps without assistance for weeks which turned to months. After my dressing was taken off in his office, the terror my soul endured is forever scarring. I was told this happens, not to worry and to put this prescribed cream on it. I thought this cream would heal the area, sadly this was only the beginning. I was not informed I would end up with a hole that literally held 3-4 (4x4 gauzes deep) This is called debridement, Dr Yu had to continue weekly to cut deeper and wider to reach healthy tissue, then stuffed with gauze and cream. Hence, My surgery was in early December with known knowledge I was moving off Island end of February 2023. My move I had to delay until end of March. I had a injury to my shoulder and had experienced really bad medical care (5 surgeries) and was now on a mission to reach UCLA on the mainland for proper medical care to a very damaged shoulder. Another reason I went private with Dr. Yu and signed my rights away in addition to over 13K. I had great fear to say the least and wanted to be sure I had the best of the best. Upon my departure to the mainland I was concerned, upset, frustrated, in pain, sad and my spirit finally broke. Dr Yu had ordered me that cream from his distributor to take with me considering I am now going to have to seek follow up care on the mainland at my expense. I said my good byes and was asked for another 40.00 to pay for the cream after spending hundreds on the purchasing of gauze, tape, and the cream weekly and rides to his office as I could not drive. Upon arrival of the Mainland I was immediately put on a "Wound Vac" I was attached to this 24/7 and weekly appts at the hospital. That gigantic hole took another 6 weeks under constant care and medical technology. In my opinion I should have never been home on my own with a gigantic hole shoving gauze into it. YES, this was over 20K and I am the lucky one whom is paying for it. Second* The incision is horrific and I hate to even see myself in a mirror, I have spent several hundreds on scarring sheets, gels, creams you name it. I am still almost a year in complete sadness and reminders of this horrible event. I finally got the courage to write to Dr. Yu asking for my 13K plus returned to me so I could use it against another 16K to fix this nightmare. I was given my quote by the plastic surgeon on the mainland whom took my case and is willing to fix this mess 16K. I felt this was fair and would be the right thing to do. This 13K has turned into a financial nightmare pushing my total medical costs to more than 30K and if I want to get this corrected I need another 16K. Dr Yu did call me back and we did in fact have a nice conversation and the end result is Dr. Yu would be willing to operate on me again to correct this mess. I would pay for all other costs associated with the medical procedure. I believe it is around 8K I would need to pay. I would need airfare, someone to look after my care, a place to stay and a vehicle and airfare to get back to the mainland. Last, My medical records read "Tummy Tuck" when I received them but hey my hernia and abs got repaired I HOPE! Reality I will forever look this way. I do not have the money for another correction either by Dr. Yu or the surgeon here. Lesson: Do not do a procedure you cannot afford if something goes wrong and you must be able to trust the person whom severely scarred you to make that same incision and try again on you. The biloma (toxic bile collection) took up almost half the size of my liver. I had to go to Mayo Clinic Hospital for a resolution because no one knew how to resolve it on Maui. The doctor was knowledgeable and gave me a couple of options for treatment. They even had samples of the medication he prescribed so I could start treatment immediately, while I got my prescription filled. Unfortunately, as I would find out this appointment and treatment is where the good experience turned into a multi-month issue dealing with the lack of support staff to get a prescription pre-auth approved. While you wouldn't think that insurance pre-authorization should be a big issue, with this office and the processes they have in place took 2 months for the nurse to even submit the pre-auth to the insurance. The bottleneck is one person to submit the pre-auth paperwork and she said they were short-staffed. After I contacted the office to find out what other solutions are available the nurse said that the reason the pre-auth was denied was that I needed a test that she said: "The test was not available on the island of Maui". She said I had an option to appeal the pre-auth denial but I would need to fill that out myself and submit it to the insurance company. I stated in the appeal to the denial of the pre-auth that it was a catch-22 because the test they needed to approve the prescription was not available here on Maui. after submitting the appeal I get a call from the insurance company that the information provided by the nurse was incorrect and there is a place to get the test in Kihei. The insurance company said that the doctor's office will contact me with a referral. This never happened and after a week I called the office and they said the referral would be to the doctor, which they didn't provide to me or the doctor's office. Because of the office's misinformation, incorrect prescription pre-auth submitted by the doctor's office, and not responding to the insurance company in a timely fashion, I just got the denial to the appeal from the insurance company. At this point, I am done with this office and will try another doctor that has an office that is better able to support their clients.

She has always taken her time with me, followed through on whatever she said she would do and I never feel rushed. That alone I feel is worth 10 out of 5 stars, but there are more reasons. I have very complex care needs, including early menopause, HRT, vulvodynia, lichen, and several other chronic health conditions. She has worked so hard to get me as comfortable and the conditions as managed as possible. I am only 38 years old, so these conditions have major impacts on my quality of life, and her care is an indispensable part of my treatment. She also takes great care to ensure adequate pain management happens for procedures. I never realized that this level of care and attention to my pain was even to be expected in these situations, but I now know and won't settle for anything less. Now, a shout-out to the front desk staff. They all know my name, say hello, and get back to me if I leave a message. They all work very hard. I know we have to leave messages, and sometimes wait a day or 2, but they are one of the few offices that actually call me back. I am confident when I leave a message there. Kyleen specifically has been so amazing and is working with me on a special treatment: Emsella. This treatment is approved to help manage incontinence and improve sexual wellness. Well, we tried it to see if it would help with the nerve pain/vulvodynia, and it has! Like I can sit in a regular chair now, and I am beyond grateful. There are other aspects, but hey, that's my business. Lol. I am being VERY transparent with my health because I think it paints a picture of the type of care, empathy, and dedication Dr. Ammerman and her whole team provide.
