We stopped at the Ludlow Cafe on a road trip (Dallas to Reno) and it was a wise choice. It's located on the historic Route 66 and it is an authentic example of old school American diner. I ordered the chicken fried steak (CFS) and it came with mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies, a roll and choice of soup or salad. I choose the homemade vegetable beef soup and it was so tasty. My CFS was fork tender with a crispy crust and mighty fine gravy. Being an old Texan I have high standards for CFS and this one met them. I enjoyed the sides but the star was the CFS. My wife had the popcorn shrimp basket (with fries) and said it was very tasty and a huge portion. We finished our meal with peanut butter cream pie and it was very good. While traveling to Laughlin, we stopped here for lunch. This is a little diner in the middle of nowhere. The decor looks a bit worn, outdated and quirky. We were greeted and told to sit at a table that had menus. There were a few tables that were empty of people but were occupied by dirty dishes. We found a spot. Our friendly waitress was kind and courteous. I ordered a burger with fries. My wife got a burger with chips. The food came out fast. Everything was hot when delivered. My burger was nice and juicy. The patty was cooked medium to medium well. It was a good burger but a bit small. The fries were good and the portion was generous. My wife reported that her burger was delicious. All in all, a good experience. The service was excellent. The place is a bit crusty but generally clean. The prices are ok for being so out of the way. It was worth the stop. read more

Located just 20 miles from the Amboy volcanic crater (which I'm told was last active in the 1930's!) Ludlow was one of the few little towns between Barstow & Laughlin - so glad there is a place to stop for food. The restaurant is very rustic and cute as there is a historical marker out front saying this area was originally a train station back in the day. For the food - it was pretty good. Girlfriend got the club sandwich ($13.99) with fries which was the first thing our waiter recommended and it was really good. I'm on a low-carb diet so I got the bacon cheeseburger combo ($17.99), protein style (no bun, wrapped in lettuce) with a salad & blue cheese dressing. The salad was really fresh & juicy. The burger was seasoned just right & the bacon was tasty. I also got the vegetable turkey soup which was not very tasty. I also need to mention that all their desserts here are homemade! We got the peanut butter cream pie ($5.59) - and added a scoop of maple bourbon pecan ice cream ($1.00 extra) and it was really good Overall this was nice stop for lunch on out road-trip. Just stopped for a bowl of Chili instead of getting a breakfast on my way back to Kingman, AZ. The bowl of chili was $9.99 and wasn't very good!!! She asked if I wanted cheese & onions when I ordered. I said yes. No where on the menu , nor did the waitress inform me that there would be a $2.29 charge extra for cheese & onions. When I mentioned to the waitress that I was uninformed of the extra charge either from her or was it stated on the menu, she was unapologetic and informed me that this was California and that was how it was. We came into the restaurant and it was about 1/3 occupied. Male staff said, "hi folks, go ahead and sit anywhere.". That was the last time we were spoken to by anyone. We got up and left 20 minutes later. In the meantime, staff chatted and wandered everywhere but the dining room - except for the one time people at the table next to us got up, walked over to staff and asked if they could order some pie for desert. Male staffer cheerily said "oh sure!" And brought pie to them. Then he went back to chatting with the other staff. No one came over to address us or anyone else in the dining room, so we left. After 4 days and 3 rainy, windy nights tent camping with friends in the Mojave Desert, we were ravenous for a hot breakfast on our way home. Our party of 4 adults and a toddler stopped into Ludlow Cafe on the Monday after New Year's around 10am. We seated ourselves in a booth and were quickly attended to, and a round of hot coffees were brought over. The coffee wasn't anything to write home about, and honestly neither was the food, but the experience in itself was warm and pleasant. The interior of the cafe boasts a tall wooden A-frame ceiling and is decorated with various relics of the past like old oil lanterns, a box that apparently used to house dynamite, tons of horseshoes and other equestrian accessories. The booths are old school vinyl, and there are fixed seats at the bar if you're looking for an even more casual experience. We ordered a variety of classics - chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, bacon and eggs with toast, all of which were basic and no frills but really hit the spot after a cold long weekend of camping. Coffee refills were plentiful and the check came quickly when we were ready to leave. We took a little extra time to admire the outside of the cafe as well, where there is a cute little mining cart that says "Ludlow Mining Co 1882," some old cars forever parked at the station next door and a couple of red, white and blue painted benches featuring the Route 66 marker, which make for a perfect photo op. I'm not sure what people are expecting of this little place but we found it to be a lovely stop for a hot breakfast and some small town charm. Did some yelping on our way to Lake Havasu and we decided to give them a try. The place is fairly old and weather. The staff are absolutely awesome and super friendly. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger combo that came with fries and a choice of salad or soup of the day. Today's soup was beef barely. So the burger was yummy a tad bit over cooked but still good. The bacon was thick and crunchy with great flavor. The fries were awesome nice hot and crunchy. The soup I think the beef might have been leftover meatloaf, especially the way it was cut and look. This review is LONG overdue. Back on May 31st, I experienced one of the most genuine and affecting acts of kindness in my lifetime, thanks to the team at the Ludlow Cafe. I had gone camping alone in the Mojave so I could catch a meteor shower, when my car got thoroughly stuck in what I now know is referred to as "sugar sand" aka extremely soft sand. As a disclaimer, I highly recommend NOT camping alone in the Mojave unless you are experienced with the area, and/or own an AWD vehicle with rope and/or recovery traction boards. I spent over an hour (at 3am) trying to dig the sand away from the tires around my car following a four-hour drive. I decided to end my struggle and wait until morning. When I woke up, I managed to flag down an incredibly helpful couple who, using their off-road vehicle, attempted to push my car out of the ditch to no avail. Rather than leave me, they extended a generous offer to drive me to the nearest gas station on their way to Temecula. That gas station was a Chevron nearly fifty miles away, in the same plaza as the Ludlow Cafe. When I arrived at this cozy diner, teeming with positive energy, I sat at the bar with the day bag I packed, and rotated my stool back and forth looking up possible solutions for my predicament. Service was prompt and friendly, as I was offered iced tea and an ear for me to explain my circumstance. As I called AAA and a few local tow companies, it became clear how expensive this ordeal was going to be. AAA does not service situations like this, and most tow companies wouldn't touch the situation. I did find one company who was willing to pick me up and service the vehicle, but this would have set me back at least $600. As my options grew more and more limited, the waitress began to make a few calls to a group of locals who (now unsurprisingly) deal with these situations quite often and have created a task force for emergencies. She felt pretty confident that she could rustle up a helping hand. As things started to look up, I graciously ordered breakfast of eggs, bacon, hash browns, and toast, which was absolutely delicious and well-priced. Exactly the kind of reprieve I needed. Before long, the owner of the shop stops in, walks right up next to me, and she says warmly, "Hi Eric, so I hear you're having car problems." Still in disbelief that the owner of the shop and her co-worker have agreed to take me to my car and pull it out of the sand, I find myself stepping into the front seat of her Ram 3500 and we set off toward the Kelso Dunes. We talk about the area's history, different types of rattlesnakes, and how to survive out in the desert if you find yourself stranded. Time flies and we reach my car. Within minutes, my Toyota is secured with ratchet straps and the Ram plucks it out like a loose tooth! I'm both shocked and in a near euphoric state of gratitude. I profusely thank the pair and offer to pay them for their help (gas money, or anything!), to which they politely decline, and just ask that I let people know about their friendly little diner on Route 66. We took a picture to commemorate the moment, and then they set off for another fifty miles back. At this point I am beside myself. My whole day, week, and possibly even my health was saved because of the team at the Ludlow Cafe. Not to mention, the money saved which could have been $600+, not including any damage to the vehicle. I immediately scaled the 800 ft dunes fueled by pure excitement and what felt like a new lease on life! This will forever remain as some of the most sincere help I've ever received, and aside from the obvious lessons I learned from camping in the desert, I also learned that you should never underestimate the kindness of strangers and to pay it forward, because you never know how life-saving your act can be. I hope the motel doesn't close, last time I was there someone backed a truck into the roof over the drive through aria. There's a patch of roof that's totally exposed. They have to know about it but it's just been left that way for years. These historic places should be respected and kept up. Even if it was via go fund me or something. What a gem of a place! We were driving through and needed a bathroom on our way to Laughlin so pulled off the 40 for the Chevron and then found this A-frame beaut and how could we not stop here! Double bonus that they were actually open on Thanksgiving!!! The decor of the establishment is classic meets rustic diner on Route 66 with lots of memorabilia, homey wood and some stone on the walls. Our waiter was so sweet and told us his faves were the club, chili, burgers, etc. nuff said! I ordered the club on sourdough and it was a delight! Fully stuffed with cheese, turkey (hey, it is Thanksgiving!), bacon, lettuce and mayo. Fries were hot and crispy. Beau got the burger without a bun and I stole a bite and it was tasty.
