We stopped at the Ludlow Cafe on a road trip (Dallas to Reno) and it was a wise choice. It's located on the historic Route 66 and it is an authentic example of old school American diner. I ordered the chicken fried steak (CFS) and it came with mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies, a roll and choice of soup or salad. I choose the homemade vegetable beef soup and it was so tasty. My CFS was fork tender with a crispy crust and mighty fine gravy. Being an old Texan I have high standards for CFS and this one met them. I enjoyed the sides but the star was the CFS. My wife had the popcorn shrimp basket (with fries) and said it was very tasty and a huge portion. We finished our meal with peanut butter cream pie and it was very good. Rustic charm ambiance. Our server Tayler was a doll. We ordered and all shared food. I highly recommend the club sandwich and tuna melt, the Ruben sandwick was tender and good too. The salads were were fresh not bagged lettuce. They had fresh potato salad. If I could give this place 0 stars I would, not only did the food make me and my entire family sick but the service there sucked! We came in with a family of 8 and soon and as we walked in we were told we can't stay and eat by this rude waitress . While traveling to Laughlin, we stopped here for lunch. This is a little diner in the middle of nowhere. The decor looks a bit worn, outdated and quirky. We were greeted and told to sit at a table that had menus. There were a few tables that were empty of people but were occupied by dirty dishes. We found a spot. Our friendly waitress was kind and courteous. I ordered a burger with fries. My wife got a burger with chips. The food came out fast. Everything was hot when delivered. My burger was nice and juicy. The patty was cooked medium to medium well. It was a good burger but a bit small. The fries were good and the portion was generous. My wife reported that her burger was delicious. All in all, a good experience. The service was excellent. The place is a bit crusty but generally clean. The prices are ok for being so out of the way. It was worth the stop. read more

This iconic diner, in the middle of nowhere, is like stepping back to a much better time. I ordered french toast with bacon and hashbrowns, the hashbrowns were so fresh, as well as the french toast. Quick stop in passing through. Cute little stop Bathroom is showing its age. Makes me wonder what the back looks like, I ordered hashbrowns, 1 pancake and bacon. Plus a souvenir Magnet for $5 my total was $30 a little too high a price for a 1 person breakfast. I understand that they may need to keep prices high for obvious reasons. Located just 20 miles from the Amboy volcanic crater (which I'm told was last active in the 1930's!) Ludlow was one of the few little towns between Barstow & Laughlin - so glad there is a place to stop for food. The restaurant is very rustic and cute as there is a historical marker out front saying this area was originally a train station back in the day. For the food - it was pretty good. Girlfriend got the club sandwich ($13.99) with fries which was the first thing our waiter recommended and it was really good. I'm on a low-carb diet so I got the bacon cheeseburger combo ($17.99), protein style (no bun, wrapped in lettuce) with a salad & blue cheese dressing. The salad was really fresh & juicy. The burger was seasoned just right & the bacon was tasty. I also got the vegetable turkey soup which was not very tasty. I also need to mention that all their desserts here are homemade! We got the peanut butter cream pie ($5.59) - and added a scoop of maple bourbon pecan ice cream ($1.00 extra) and it was really good Overall this was nice stop for lunch on out road-trip. It was either Ludlow Cafe or Dairy Queen in a last minute decision to stop for lunch. Figured we can get DQ anytime, let's hit up the little cafe. More so because it's not a franchise either and small businesses need our support. Cute little place. Definitely old and dated, but based on its location, I wouldn't expect anything less. The young man that greeted us, took our order, and brought us our food was really nice. We had the restaurant to ourselves basically. Husband ordered bacon cheeseburger with fries and it came with choice of soup or salad. He chose the beef & barley soup and said it was really good. Said his burger was good too and the bacon was perfect. I ordered a grilled ham & cheese. Thinking I should have gone with a burger. It had a few slices of super thin deli ham that were thrown on the grill for char, and then it had one piece of cheese. Half on each side. And I'm guessing the bread was toasted in the toaster, not on the grill. It could have been better. The fries on the other hand were cooked to crispy perfection. Just stopped for a bowl of Chili instead of getting a breakfast on my way back to Kingman, AZ. The bowl of chili was $9.99 and wasn't very good!!! She asked if I wanted cheese & onions when I ordered. I said yes. No where on the menu , nor did the waitress inform me that there would be a $2.29 charge extra for cheese & onions. When I mentioned to the waitress that I was uninformed of the extra charge either from her or was it stated on the menu, she was unapologetic and informed me that this was California and that was how it was. We came into the restaurant and it was about 1/3 occupied. Male staff said, "hi folks, go ahead and sit anywhere.". That was the last time we were spoken to by anyone. We got up and left 20 minutes later. In the meantime, staff chatted and wandered everywhere but the dining room - except for the one time people at the table next to us got up, walked over to staff and asked if they could order some pie for desert. Male staffer cheerily said "oh sure!" And brought pie to them. Then he went back to chatting with the other staff. No one came over to address us or anyone else in the dining room, so we left. So I stopped to fuel up because the classic truckers boxing in on the freeway made me miss my first fuel turn-off. Noticed the diner and went, why not. I'm glad I did, though. I'm a patty melt guy. When I see it on the menu, I just have to try it, and yes, a real patty melt. Not a Frisco burger, a true patty melt. The waitress was very nice, agreed that the patty melt needs grilled onions, but it's optional here. So I chilled back with a great patty melt, excellent fries, and a spot on Dr. Pepper. Even though it was 114 degrees outside, this place was cool, comfortable, and relaxing.
