The center may look unassuming from the outside, but inside you'll find classes in everything from knitting to weaving, printmaking to pottery, basic beading techniques to advanced metalsmithing for jewelry, and so much more! Classes are affordable, geared toward a wide range of skills and ages, and very enjoyable. The summer program features a great kids' camp that fills up very quickly and provides kids of all ages and backgrounds a chance to have fun and develop their creative and artistic skills at the same time. The staff both running the center and teaching the classes are kind, helpful, and very knowledgeable, which makes for an easy time in both signing up and taking the classes. Most of the instructors are themselves local artists and craftspeople who enrich our city with diverse and unique talents, and generously share their skills with the community at large. Raleigh is very fortunate to have a place like this, offering such varied and interesting public classes - find your creative calling there today!

The building is beautiful. When you walk in you're surrounded by art of all types: ceramic, fibers,…read morewood, painting, etc. Parking is easy if you have an NCSU parking pass or it's after 5pm. Here's the reason why the Crafts Center earned this one star review. I enrolled in the beginning sewing class taught by Roberta. Roberta wasn't able to effectively teach all 8 students at once in my experience. For some students she was incredibly attentive and they (first time sewist) finished fabulous projects such as a jacket with set in sleeves. My experience was very different. Roberta could not help me read a beginner pattern (pull on Pietra shorts from Closet Core Patterns), shamed me for not using a Big 4 pattern (which I don't fit into for bust and hips so that wasn't an option) and making a muslin (which is super necessary for my body proportions to check fit), couldn't pivot to tell me how to adjust for high (15") waist/hip difference, or help me learn (in the last class) to sew a basic zigzag stitch. There were constant issues with the equipment in the room and basic supplies such as seam rippers were not provided (Roberta never told us to purchase them, so when I needed a seam ripper during class and there was none, I had to leave to go purchase one). Roberta chose not to wear a mask during the first session of the class (~January 2022) during an Omicron surge. I asked over email several times to talk to someone about this class so that no one else would have to have the atrocious experiences I did. They said that they reminded Roberta about the mask policy and suggested that I talk to someone at the front desk but for the two subsequent classes, there wasn't anyone at the front desk when I arrived to the building. Roberta apologized at the end of the class for not being able to teach me but the bigger question is why would the Crafts Center hire a teacher that can only teach some, but not all, students? The Crafts Center charged me $95 for class where I learned absolutely nothing. I could say you get what you pay for but in this case I paid for getting nothing. Future students should know that the Crafts Center has a zero refund policy once the class starts. Save yourself time and hassle by taking a beginning sewing class somewhere else that actually is invested in teaching *all* students with folks who are good teachers, not just good artisans.

Very impressive crafts center! I go here for night drawing…read moreclasses, and it's teeming with life. Every studio has some kind of class going on: clay, jewelry, photo, painting, woodwork, you name it. The classes have reasonable schedules that accommodate full-time working adults. The prices are quite low. I'm always excited to come here and learn some neat techniques despite it being Monday night. If you are considering anew hobby and looking for classes, check out this place first.

So when I am in a new area of a town, I google "art supplies" and pray for some relief from the tyranny of plastic and cake decorating, scrapbook paper and seasonal driftwood. I also observed a class with younger children and the teacher was patient and also encouraging of creativity with the kids. They also host some really great outdoor markets on the weekend where you can find lots of great local art and music!

This art gallery is truly a hidden gem right in the heart of downtown. I've walked passed the front…read moredoor over two dozen times and didn't look twice, which I'm now kicking myself over. It's all thanks to Rod O. for his stellar review that I made my way to Adam Cave Fine Art and I can assure you I will return. The gallery itself is in an old building directly on Hargett Street (next door to Landmark Tavern). Walk up the old, creaky, wooden steps to a beautiful, open room with hardwood floors, bright natural lighting and paintings hung all around. The gallery consists of three separate rooms and has rotating exhibits every 1.5 months or so. The current exhibit, David Dunlop, is an incredible treat to view with beautiful nature and city scenes painted on aluminum with oils (exhibit on display until April 19th!) Although there were only a handful of people upon our visit, Adam Cave, the owner, was greeting everyone and interacting with them on a personal level. There was also complimentary cheese and wine being offered which was a very classy touch on a Sunday afternoon. I checked the website to see if there was a calendar of events so you'd know when they'd be offering these type of perks in the future, but didn't see any information. I did sign up for the e-mail per Adam's request, so hopefully I'll be updated on future events and exhibits through that. Adam Cave Fine Art Gallery is definitely a must visit during First Friday, and will now certainly be on my list (and it's so convenient to anyone already downtown!) I highly recommend giving the gallery a try, I guarantee anyone that appreciates art will appreciate the gallery and you can't help but feel you've stepped back in time as you walk up the flight of steps into a world of beauty in a beautifully restored building.
