First time here. We were told to get the surf and turf, which runs $19 -- a bit much for one burrito, in my opinion. But a friend swore by it, so we went for it anyway. It tasted good, but honestly the ingredients weren't fresh enough to justify that price point. Solid burrito, just not $19 solid. Worth noting: I'm used to eating authentic Mexican food, and while this place will definitely please a lot of taste buds, it's not what I'd call authentic. Go in expecting that and you'll enjoy it more. The real star was the cilantro mayo sauce -- out of this world. Rich, velvety mayo with a bright citrusy punch of lime, savory garlic, and zesty cilantro. It went perfectly with the burrito and just as well with the chips. The tacos were all well done and they had great presentation and taste (4 out of 5; average). My wife's grandma watched the luchadors (wrestlers) on television and it was always entertaining. She saw Lucha Libre's entire theme was to pay homage to Mexico's luchadors and they didn't disappoint. We paid for the champions table and it was a lot of fun The food js also delicious. The constantly changing menu though is an annoyance however, they used to have tj dogs they used to have enchiladas, they used to have bottled Jamaica aqua Fresca drinks and they constantly have "limited time" menu items sometimes they bring back the enchiladas as a limited time item It's a little frustrating since some stuff will become a new "favorite item" only to be gone next time I visit and sometimes permanently. The champion fries (basically their version of carne asada fries) now have chipotle sauce on it which "isn't bad" but again another random change I don't think was needed for an already great menu item. My friends and I were looking for a quick bite before our San Diego Zoo excursion and came across Lucha Libre. We ordered for pickup ahead of time via DoorDash, but ended up eating at their outdoor patio area. Of course, it wasn't until after we finished eating that we saw the signage saying food ordered for pickup shouldn't be eaten there... oops. Each pair shared a breakfast burrito. They got the Chilaquiles Burrito while we get the El Jefe Burrito. My partner and I enjoyed ours for the most part as it had a bit of everything. We still thought it was considered a basic/standard breakfast burrito. The steak was well seasoned and moist, but there wasn't enough to supplement the each bite. They give the options of scrambled or omelette styled eggs, but the omelette style was a bit dry and dense. The burrito mostly relied on the extensive salsa bar (which was pretty good!) They also give tortilla chips, pairing well with the salsa. The other couple felt similar of their chilaquiles burrito, but wished it had meat. Because we all shared, it didn't feel too heavy, but I can imagine feeling differently if I ate an entire burrito. Inside was well decorated and clean. It appears to be one of those self order/self serve places. The staff was nice and didn't pay us much mind outside of the polite greetings as we picked up our food. Not your average taco shop!! The staff was so helpful! They also have kiosks you can order from. Theming is killer. I love a well themed and decorated place and Lucha Libre absolutely delivers (even in the bathrooms lol). The salsa bar is great, has a good variety of unique offerings. Some yummy drinks, I opted for the seasonal pumpkin spice horchata, a sweet and pumpkin-y twist on traditional horchata. Their menu is very california burrito centric, and I got the birria california burrito! The actual birria itself left a little something to be desired, could've upped the seasoning on that imo. But other than that it was pretty good! Does cost a pretty penny tho- one burrito and a large horchata cost $25. More so paying for atmosphere methinks... I will say this place is really overrated. The decor is cool. Too bad the food couldn't be good. Also felt like ther's no real vibe here. You don't interact with staff, they only bring your food to your table and then your on your own. And the girl who brought the food to the table just set it down and turned around. There were also a couple of spots in front of the pWe ordered up front. No line. Their chips seemed freshly made and it was nice to have hot ones. My partner really liked their salsa and sauces. I had the chicken taco and it was okay. Their loaded fries were also just okay. The fries looked weird and the ratio of guac wasn't great. The booths were okay. Sadly, we weren't too impressed with Lucha Libre, though we really wanted to be. The tacos were just okay, but nothing special. It's a small space in Mission Hills close to the freeway. I ordered a potato taco which was literally just French fries thrown into a tortilla. They could have done much better with that. They have an outdoor section and we enjoyed sitting outside. I haven't been in the area for about a decade and decided to stop in for tacos and a hot dog because I remember they used to be delicious Lucia Libre still has.delicious flavorful meats, sauces and tortillas. 5 star flavors. The shrimp taco was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was the best shrimp taco I've had in years. The steak was also flavorful but so tough it was inedible. The restaurant needs to use a more tender cut of beef. I can't recommend anything with the steak. The decor is fun with a luchador. Don't miss the paintings in the bathroom. Friendly staff. 11 years later... that surf and turf burrito still hits the spot. I've sadly moved out of SD but will try to hit up Lucha Libre every time I'm in the area. Long gone are the days where you have to wait in an exhausting line that stretches out to the street since there's now the magic of online ordering! and they have a second location too?? How times have changed. The restaurant itself has retained it's charm and theme, now with upgraded iPads to order. There's still the salsa bar that's well stocked and you're welcome to self-serve. I always end up online ordering and pick up is a breeze on the way to the airport. I'll order extra to enjoy at home. My salsas always make it through TSA no problem and somehow the burrito is still warm by the time I make it back after my flight. Say what you will, but despite sitting out for ~3 hours, the surf and turf burrito is still delectable. It's the only burrito I order from Lucha Libre now as it's consistently perfect. A friend recommended trying out Lucha Libre; I went for their Surf & Turf Burrito (steak, shrimp, rice, avocado, pico de gallo & secret chipotle sauce) and the husband got the Surfin' California Burrito (steak, shrimp, fresh fries, pico de gallo, Jack cheese, avocado and secret chipotle sauce). Both were tasty and fairly generous in size. Aside from the food, I thought the lucha libre theme was fun. There are many colorful masks, and wrestling photos and posters decorated throughout. And for those who don't know, this spot made it into an episode of Man vs. Food way back when. Overall, food was decent; I wouldn't say it's true authentic Mexican food, more of a eclectic style. I finally had a cheat day and went to Lucha Libre Taco Shop and got The BRC. I ate half of this burrito, and this is the first piece of chicken I've come across. Not worth the carbs/calories. I really wanted to like this place. I love Lucha, and I love the vibe inside. But this isn't it. It doesn't even taste of anything. Needless to say, I'm tossing the rest of this out. I mean seriously? I would've just gotten a bean and cheese burrito if I knew it would be like this. So disappointed by this meal. The order comes with chips and self-serve salsa bar which has a variety of spicy salsas and creamy cilantro sauce that is really good. The surf and turf was solid with good steak and shrimp, though the fries were kinda okay. The same goes for the bulgogi burrito - the meat was excellent but the fries were okay. Honestly my surf n turf burrito was mediocre. Like super mediocre. This place was recommended to me and while the cali surf n turf was supposed to be the jam - the regular was supposed to be good as well. The meat was good, and it was still fresh and solid. But I finished this thing - for $19, as a 120lb female who does not eat much I should not be able to finish a burrito. In SF and other places in SD, a burrito that costs that much or less I can barely finish half of. Not bad, but disappointing for sure. read more
