A couple of times I had to make multiple trips in one day. The staff was always professional and helpful, and almost always had what I needed, which is saying a lot since I managed an old 50-unit building that needed a lot of things for a lot of problems. Sometimes I would grab the wrong thing, and it was never a problem bringing it back and exchanging it for the right thing. Sometimes my boss would get a bit behind in paying for it all, and they would gently remind me, and the ol' slumlord would send them a check from Florida. They were cool but firm about it. It seemed to be a situation they'd been through many times before. They have homey touches here - a small tv on the counter that's always showing something. A fridge with Faygo in the can. My favorite thing about 3rd Ave Hardware is the bicycle selection. In the warmer months there's a whole row chained together on the sidewalk out front. Old ten speeds, 70s 3 speeds, cruisers, mountain bikes, etc. But, wait, there's more inside! Another row between the front door and the register and still more up and down the cramped aisles! (3rd Ave Hardware could really use a more spacious locale.) The prices won't break the bank either. I just bought my second bike from there - a green mountain bike from CCM, that Canadian company that makes hockey equipment. It's a pretty sweet bike for $100. My last one was, too. It was an old 70s 3 speed with a big comfy seat and a glistening orange paint job that just looked like candy. Too bad it got ripped off. Oh well, that's life in the D. I won't pack it in, and I'm glad 3rd Ave won't either. I'm only knocking them down one star because of their paint selection. It's lousy and overpriced. Go somewhere else for paint.

Self-checkout fury as customers threaten to boycott Lowe's and go to Ace Hardware…read more Self-checkouts have been blamed for people losing their jobs and there is now an ongoing pushback against the technology being used, as one retailer found out.  Ace Hardware in Wyandotte Mi, a 2nd generation owner Jerry Jr. grew up in his father's store.  The negative experience of zero cashiers at Lowe's has me visiting Ace Hardware much more.  Ace sends me 2 coupons each month $5 off $20 a mega deal 25 percent off.  And I get points every purchase towards another free $5 many times each year.  A fast Friendly crew always ready to help.  Been a customer 35 plus years for a great reason .  Thanks Dawn the manager and Jerry the owner .  Seriously Ace corporate needs to make a commercial to promote No Self Checkouts in our stores .  @acehardware #acehardware

This place is a gem. I'm all about the people and…read moresupporting the local guy when I can. This store makes that possible more than not because the items that are a couple bucks more than say Amazon for example are light-years ahead in quality. Really make shopping here for most things a no-brainier. Brian, Adam and the crew here are always friendly and welcoming. They just as soon talk about your grow for 30 minutes and look at your baby pictures than sell a product and it has that no-pressure feel that makes spending money in places like that very easy. Easy because you know the guys are giving you sound advice. Admittedly, I do not use the base nutrient lines offered at the store, but I do not have anything against them. Heavy 16 has shown it's a great product no question. I do however like the variety in accessories, media, and a great selection of odds and ends to keep the mom's happy like Kelp teas prepackaged and ready to brew. They offer all the great microbial inoculates and boosters. One cool thing to see was fans, duct-work and filters. As well a range of Co2 options. All that being said, I would have liked to see some new "real" LED Tech like HLG or ChilLED. I understand it is hard to keep up with a market that changes so quickly but I am pretty confident anything built with Samsung Quantum Boards will be relevant for at least 2-3 years from sales. In Reality they will remain relevant for 10,000 hours of operation and while maybe more efficient lights will come and go but these true deal lights will still be producing some killer. Especially considering that we are still using HPS lamps.
